Beautiful nose with lemon, apple, peach, and chalk flavors. High acidity on the palate with more lemon and lemon zest notes, green apple, tart peach, and lots of minerals. Long finish. Wow, this was really excellent! A classic Riesling nose with lots of complexity and while it's still very young it's already very enjoyable, even though it might only show a portion of what's to come. 96++

Tried this at the beginning and end of the evening, and it significantly improved with air. That is not to say it wasn't lovely when just opened, quite some notes of ripe fruit and feeling a bit tight, but still with good acidity and white flowers. At the end of the night, this was much more supple and elegant, with more or less the same profile. If you want to drink this now, I recommend giving it plenty of air!

Lime skin, citrus pith, white quartz, honeydew rind, and hints of sea spray notes make for an accessible enough delivery of flavor, but with a limited and primary execution overall; everything here currently signals a youthful posture, but there is enough medium+ bodied stuffing to exhibit its alluring electricity and energy. Finishes linear but not without a little fruit and fun on the back end. Focused and balanced. Not exceptionally powerful, but solid all the way through.
A wine to hold for another 5-7+ years.

Saturday hangout at Domaine (Chicago, IL): Fantastic, opulent, fruit-forward riesling that drinks quite a bit like Keller, but not as oily and concentrated. Still a very rich and powerful wine with lots going on. More expressive than the 2020 Emrich Halenberg today, and for that reason more enjoyable today.

Slight petrol nose along with white flowers and stone fruit. Palate showing pithy and sour citrus, lemon peels, and lots of salinity. Great weight and density, but too tight and never unraveling beyond its sourness today.
I brought this home and tried it again later in the week and it had opened up a lot more, still with yellow citrus focus, but the minerality comes in and the acidity backs off. Lots of potential. 90+(++)

Another example for a superb 2019 Riesling, classic Wittmann, no reduction, but quite austere, lots of salinity, great structure an depth. Impressive in this baby stage, but has a it needs for maturing.

Riesling Study 011 (Pizzeria Beddia): Last bottle shared with us at #rieslingstudy011 Never had anything by this producer (never even heard of it before), but it was excellent. I got really surprisingly fresh squeezed lemon on a salt lick. I could sense fruit under there but right now it felt bathed in acid, the structure hiding the contents. This seems like something that will really shine with time.

Tasting in Germany during a brief COVID interlude - November/December 2021; 11/19/2021-12/2/2021 (Germany - Schwanau/Monschau): 93-94(+?)pts. Morstein in the hands of Wittmann is a wine which takes time to fully blossom, and that's the case here. I remember tasting the 2015 a few years ago at this same stage, and although that vintage was a little better, these wines are really austere and closed so young. Only on the second day it got better, with herbal and green notes and some residual oak. As usual for this vineyard, this wine boasts loads of tension and energy - there's nothing subtle here, and it fills one's mouth very quickly. I'd hold for quite some time to wait for a very likely improvement.

Best bottle (Restaurant Brunnenstube, Beinstein): Tasted blind. Popped and poured. Clear, pale, youthful golden color. Clean, youthful nose, quite closed. Lots of citrus and lime, some mineral notes. Unbalanced and nervous. On the palate as well nervous and unbalanced, also a bit closed. All components are there: high acidity, salty mineral core, fruit, but it makes no fun to me right now. So surprised to see that it is Wittmann’s Morstein. Did not detect the typical Morstein “darkness” in this wine. Only 12,5% abv. Well, I will not open my bottles until 2029 and this wine will certainly improve until then 😊
