Decanted for 5 hours. Seemed like it was at its best about 3-5 years ago, but it is still drinking beautifully. A lovely lingering finish. Very enjoyable.

Dufter av kjøtt, blyant - men ikke typisk vestside-aromaer. Noe maling. Umami munnfølelse også. God, frisk syre, ok kompleksitet. Fin i munnen, men litt kort i ettersmaken.

Came off to me as overoaked and a bit flabby. Did benefit from air, after which some savory mocha notes emerged, almost like a Pomerol. Fine grained tannins.

Brought to a monthly tasting and was put next its big brother of the same vintage. Turned out to be an excellent exercise as huge difference between 1st and 2nd label.
I preferred the 1st label, as this 2006 2nd label was quite under-performing for me. Still, its what I expected for a strange vintage in combination with 2nd label wine. Purchased for 28,00 Euro, which I assume is a fair price, but won't buy again.

Exactly what one would hope for from a quality second wine in an indifferent vintage - which is to say good wine and good value! ($40 cdn) Approachable, ready and ripe, though as some have said, a little short on the finish.

Second wine of one of the two Second Growth of Saint Estèphe - the beautiful Cos d'Etournel. Half Cabernet Sauvignon, half Merlot. Dark ruby colour with a slight brownish shimmer. Nose initially a bit flat with only some oxidised notes. Rapidly improving, dark berry fruits appear, then leather, smoke, toast and a bit of chocolate. Medium bodied with quite powerful rough tannins. Tase has very dark fruits, leather and led pencil. Acidity seems to be not fully integrated. Overall quite enjoyable, but not great, and possibly no improvement is to be expected.

Medium garnet with translucent rim. Berries, forest floor and some potato chips on the nose. Barely medium bodied with dark fruit and a touch of dark chocolate on the palate, integrated tannins, short to medium finish. A fine and elegant wine. 89-90

From memory: Better than last bottle – fresh and lively blackcurrant fruit with further hints of graphite and cigar box. Medium bodied – not a lot of depth or complexity, but displays good balance. Tasty, but fairly simple. Too expensive given the quality on offer.

Nice classic St. Estephe nose of dark currants, leather, earth and hints of licorice. A little thin on the tongue with a short finish. All in all not a bad little wine.

Good quality St-Estephe of medium ruby color with garnet rims, the wine has a fairly concentrated nose, showing developing and quite complex characters of blackberry and blackcurrant, liquorice, stem, toast, chocolate, pencil lead and savory. Medium in acidity, the tannin is ripe and velvety, the wine is fairly full-bodied with good intensity on the palate, showing flavors of blackcurrant, dark plum and blackberry, chocolate, liquorice, cedar and leather. With a fairly long finish, it is ready to drink now but can benefit from further ageing of another 3-5 years.

Vanilla and spices nose a bit short but still quite floral. Ripe red cherries spices. The mid palate drops off quite a bit but you can immediately tell its a cos.

Decanted for a couple of hours before tasting. Dark purple core, pink rim. On the nose; dusty dark plums and blackcurrants – showing some signs of age and typicity with hints of cigar ash and pencil lead appearing as the wine opens up further in the glass. On the palate; slender, cool fruit – smooth and well balanced, but lacking concentration and length. Disturbingly enough the wine seemed to get thinner and thinner as the evening progressed, which probably isn’t good news for its ability to age (at least I won’t wait more than two to three years before opening my last bottle). All in all a decent wine – you get the sense of drinking Bordeaux, but there’s no “wow factor”. In my experience this is however more or less what you might expect for a “meagre” $60 in this part of the world.

Too close in the nose. Dark fruits, consistent palate for pagodes but not impressive. Another wine of the dinner, Grand Mayne 04 is much better than this one.

Ethereal nose of St. Estephe earth, dried herbs, smoke and leather. This medium to full-bodied wine is extraordinary in every way. Dry, earthy, and sumptuous, but develops to become a bit creamier in texture over time. Flavors of currants, black tea, chocolate, pepper, coffee, and lead pencil flavors are at the core. The tannic structure suggests a shelf life of 10-15 yrs but is thoroughly enjoyable now. Drink from 2011 to 2021.

Meh! Could have been from South Africa, South America or Australia at the moment - generic big fruit and red wine taste. Has good structure and balance, but needs time. Pretty bland at the moment, but these are generally decent wines that usually come round with time.

Drinking well at the moment despite its modest age - compact palate with graphite, black fruit and minty notes. Fine tannins and unobtrusive structure make this quite approachable. Will it age well? Hmmm - not so sure about that. I'll probably drink the rest of mine within the next 3-5 years.

Came from a half bottle. Really exceptional at this moment and time, rich dark fruits garnished with a bit of oak, very fancy wine but of course a bit one dimensional!!! But still I can't refuse it, hot sexy nose!!!! Better than the same stage while I tasted the 2001 vintage.

Clear dark plum core with a slightly developed edge and thin watery rim - some development showing. Clean and very expressive nose of bright red fruit, spice and floral notes - quite new world. Dry on the palate with moderate alcohol/body and mod+ acid/tannin. Very intense flavour of red fruit, earth and minerals. Tight finish with the mineral and earth notes continuing. Very well made - lean but it should develop well over the next 5 years.

Cos d'Estournel Wine Dinner with Valentine Labarthe (The Pawn, Hong Kong): Looks quite a lot older because of its light and near-transparent colour. Canned blackcurrant catering jam on the nose. Light stawberry and cream soda palate. Lots of vanilla. Not much length. Seems a different style of winemaking from the 1996.

Decanter Fine Wine Encounter (Landmark Hotel, London): Red with just a hint of blue, lighter than I expected. Nose has a hint of fish meal, some blackcurrant, some herbs. Blackcurrant comes through on a light palate. Slight tannins on fininsh which it struggles to carry.
