Medium red, transparent --- Nose some mint, some cherries, nice elegant wood note, however, the nose appears pretty shy --- Palate watery, fresh, nie fruit aspects, cherries and some black fruit, nice bitter tone, polished, nice tannins --- Finishes pretty long on its fruity and tart aspects. In every second you perceive high quality while missing the Sangiovese dolce vita touch a bit.

Nose quite muted, touch of berry, leather and oak. Palate much more exciting with exotic orange peel, star anise, dark cherry, a firm structure and powdery tannin. Again, these Rancias don’t provide much youthful exuberance, instead feeling a little withdrawn and sullen, albeit with very good potential. Maybe a 24 hour decant would do this the world of good. In any event, I think it will evolve pretty nicely. There is very good structure to it so give it another 3-5 years.

P: Dried, dark red cranberries skins, drying and bitter minerals, graphite, and drying tree bark.
Thinking process: I might've jumped the gun on this one, like I did with the red burg.. the leathery and plummy notes on the nose made me immediately think of an aged Bordeaux, even though the palate made me think otherwise. I didn't know of anything else that tasted like this, so..

The '18 Rancia is a very beautiful young wine. It's refined enough that it's enjoyable to drink now, but has the concentration/balance that suggests it should age well for a long time.
On the nose, I found sour cherry fruit, cassis, leather, dark red floral tones, and savory herbs and spices. On the palate the wine was nicely concentrated but also super refined in terms of texture. I found dark red fruit, leather, and savory herbal tones, on the palate, which was somewhat less open at this point than the nose. The wine was medium in body with medium to high acidity, and while there was quite a lot of tannin, the tannins were fine grained making the wine quite easy to drink already.

At urging of a fellow CT enthusiast, I tried the 2018 shortly after really enjoying the 2016. I prefer the ‘16 but this is a good wine with plenty of years ahead of it. On the nose, it shows some sour cherry but mostly just-cut cedar and damp earth. A slight alcohol smell - that and the taste suggest it’s slightly unbalanced right now but a temporary condition, likely. A lovely mouth feel, though slightly tired on day 2. Deep flavors of black cherry, black tea, earth and a hint of balsamic - blind I would think this a decade old BdM rather than Chianti as this is missing that fresh snappy acidity. Tannins are soft and silky so the mouth feel is sensuous and enjoyable. Long finish. All in all, lovely but not quite the ‘16.

Reticent at first. Herbal, sour cherry, fennel, thyme, bay and well seasoned oak notes. Subtle tea. Medium body with lovely acidity and thrust. LONG with lots of complex herbs on the finish. For me, Chianti is the king of food pairing for these savory notes and structure. This wine is on top from that perspective. Pretty perfect, although not yet as expressive as it may be with some time in bottle.

Excellent young chianti. Smoothed out with 4-5 hours of air. At first was not yielding much on the nose or palate. Nose really opened up with rhubarb, eucalyptus, vanilla and fresh berries. Palate is big on leather and blueberry transitioning to more red fruit/strawberry. Fruit carries through the finish. The tannins and acidity will carry this for years. Will hold my other bottle as long as I can...

Needs 4+ hours of air to really hit it stride right now… Preferably more. As others have noted, lighter than your typical runs rancia, but absolutely lovely, and otherwise very in line with the flavor profile, we’ve come to expect of this fabulous wine

From 375, day 2 notes. Had a glass on Day 1 and it wasn't giving much.
Nose shows dark cherries, sage, some cedar-oaky undertone. Palate is beautiful and singing. Bright cherries, lovely acidity, firm tannins, oaky chocolate, hint of thyme and other herbs. Finish is true cherry, ripe acid, a hint of something sweet but not in a sugary way. Just wow. Plenty of structure here.
Fantastic wine. Decant it for a 3-4 hours if you are drinking on day 1. Will do well with 5-10 years of age, possibly longer. Underpowered compared to Brunello, but this is very good. Makes me wonder why I don't drink more Sangio and more CCR.

Deep dark, reddish-purple garnet in color, bordering on opaque. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, blackberries & plums with overtones of earthy/dusty & floral notes, minerals, some herbal notes, tobacco & a hint of cedar in the background. Medium-full bodied with a good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blackberries & plums with herbs, minerals & a hint of vanilla/oak. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well with decanting & extended airing but has the depth, structure & potential for further development with additional aging. Appears to be more accessible than previous vintages.

Given the notes from Galloni on this vintage decided it was worth opening one. PnP. Medium red with some Sangiovese brown on the rim. Lovely red fruited floral nose without much in the way of varietal Sangiovese dusty notes. Quite forward on the palate medium bodied and very much red fruit driven whereas Rancia in my experience is much more dark/black fruits. Not a lot of tannins and quite elegant. This is enjoyable but atypical and should drink earlier than usual.

The 2018 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is a youthful, expressive and elegant wine. At the beginning it was a little rough but opened up shortly after and developed really nice over the following two days. It softened and got much more complexity but was also very good shortly after opening and a really nice companion to a good Ragu alla Bolognese. Will buy some more to cellar and will look for the 2019.

I really enjoyed the 2010 iteration of this wine recently, so we stocked up on the current 2018 vintage, and in order to assess it, opened a 375ml bottle, decanted for two hours and followed over the course of two days. At first opening, this is super tight, with just oak-based notes of pine, spearmint and smoke showing. Quite thin/just about medium-bodied on the palate. Not too impressive. Day two: this has opened up nicely, with more fruit showing now (dark cherry, cranberry, spiced orange), still oaky, but better integrated. Medium-bodied, and a bit silkier on the palate now. I have learned from the 2010 vintage of this wine that it shows excessively oaky upon release but 10-12 years after the vintage the oak absorbs and integrates, and greater complexity emerges. I feel confident this vintage will be excellent over time, although not sure it is at the level fruit-wise of the 2010. This vintage comes across as more austere, high-toned, and a bit less concentrated than the '10. Not sure I understand the stratospheric points-score given to this by a few professional critics, but in time this might earn a much higher rating.
Delicious Chianti. Explosive vibrant red fruit with lots of nuance and complexity. Redcurrants followed by beefy flavors and mushrooms. Beautiful acidity to balance it out. Superfine tannins give this a firm structure but it is perfectly integrated within the medium body.

Unsurprisingly, incredibly bottled up. Really should not have opened this so young, but if you choose to, be sure to give it hours to open up. Came back to it the next day and it was much better. Won’t open another one for at least 7-10 years
