Labeled as 14% abv. 85% Grenache, 15% Syrah. An Eric Solomon European Cellars Selection. Aged in American and French oak barrels for 9 months. The wine has viscosity. It is dark in color and opaque. The nose is of red and black fruit backed by oak. On the palate I find slightly tart berries with soft tannins that stand up to beef dishes. It would also pair with other red meat dishes or perhaps Mexican cuisine such as fajitas, tacos, or enchiladas. Nice, but not particularly memorable.

My last of these - one of the best bargains I've had at this kind of price. This is surely fading, but it's definitely still showing well and is not on its last legs. This is earthy with some pleasant leather tones, still has lively and seductive fruit, going more brown in color, very open. Drink now.

Didn't even remember buying this and found it in my 2005 bin. Read the reviews below and was bummed that I had waited to long to drink this. My bottle has been in a temperature controlled cellar for the last 4 years, and may have made a difference. I thought this wine was great. Loved the blend, which had I would have probably guessed as Southern Rhone. I had the last third of the bottle on night two and it was still very good, if not better. There is no way this wine was over the hill or finished, but I'm glad I opened it because it was showing very well. Not sure what everyone else was drinking, but I wouldn't panic if you have a bottle of this.

Picked this up a few years ago based on a review as being good value. It may have been a bit past its time when we had it. It has good color and a reasonably attractive nose, but on the palate it was quite tannic, without much fruit to balance it.

Dark color with tan tinge; cork smelled quite fruity, but wine had faint black fruit bouquet with earth, a little musty; body was weak for this varietal in my opinion; initially a bit of alcohol on the finish but this diminished after decanting and 30 minutes air. Not bad, not great. Likely a bit past it's prime. Food improved the wine.

Popped and poured (could have used a little air time). Very dark, purple color. The nose initially was very hot with a strong scent of camphor and alcohol. This receded fairly quickly (maybe in two minutes or so). The nose then revealed hints of wet dead tree branches and garden soil after it's been turned in spring. The camphor mellowed to a hint of cassis. After letting it breathe a little bit more, a number of tastes came through which included black pepper, crushed stone, and some hints of dried cherry and tarragon. This tastes very much like a good CdP and is a real bargain. Another Eric Solomon gem.
If you're holding the 2005, however, I would drink it now. I do not consider myself an expert, by any means, but it was so much hotter this time than 18 months ago, that I am thinking that this might be peaking or even just a tad past peak.

This is a great wine if you like Garnacha. And it is unfiltered, so pour slowly. Don't open and drink right away. We drank it over a few days and it improved each day.

I got excited by the recent tasting notes on here so I decided to crack it... This bottle was far from great. The nose was strange with dust, old wood, sour fruit, and more dust. The flavors brought just about the same thing.

Fortunately, my final bottle of this showed beautifully. It had the baby Chateauneuf-du-Pape character with which I fell in love. Raspberry, kirsch liquer and spice dominate with smoothe tannin and vanilla on the finish. A perfect send off to this vintage.

I feel rewarded for sitting on this for 3 years (mainly bc it was in the back of the cellar) - it still has some vibrancy and zip to it but has also developed rounder edges that make it a smooth drinker, and helps it outperform its price point. Dark cherry, cedar, and ripe plums.

Dark ruby to the rim. Nose of raspberry, licorice and spice. This is very reminiscent of a southern Rhone wine. I could easily miss this in a blind tasting. Delicious!

Noting that others had said this one needs air, we tried opening and pouring directly through a red wine Vinturi aerator which immediately improved every aspect of this wine. Follwing aeration, this was surprisingly rich & smooth with a deep purple hue, big legs and dark fruit, cedar and gravel on the nose followed by a substantial complexity & balance on the palate with long finish and nice pariing with beef burgundy (en français :bourgogne). Amazing QPR if well aerated and serially taseed over a couple of hours.

(14%) 85% Grenache, 15% Syrah – Cedar box spice on the nose with dark fruit notes. Fresh and lively on the palate this one is light to medium bodied with a nice mineral structure and firm acidity. The finish starts dry and leathery before puckering out to a creamy, vanilla (this one must see some new oak) finish that lingers on with tingly tannins. Parker went 91 here and while nice I can’t see it in that neighborhood. Maybe this was made to drink young. Perhaps I’ll give the latest vintage a go as I have liked this one more in the past…

I previously tasted this wine 10/22/08 and 10/11/09. I did not care for it on those two occasions, yet had forgotten that fact when I recently purchased this bottle (and while tasting it this time). It was splash-decanted and serially tasted over three hours. Opaque purple. Closed nose, still primarily of wood and underbrush. Full-bodied but again uninspiring on the palate. Medium acidity and black fruit on the palate, but with tannins that remain unrelenting. The middle palate has failed to fill in as of this point. I highly doubt that this wine will ever amount to much. Drink now-12/12.

Dark garnet color. Light-medium bodied, somewhat thin. As others have mentioned, this opened up over a couple hours. Nice beginning and finish, a little light in the middle. Overall an interesting drink, and a good value at under $12.

Very dark ruby purple color with big legs. The nose disipated quickly after offering a musty, stony fruit. On the palate there were definitely dominating oak and astringent tannins, oftentimes too much. Lots of wood, stone, chery, dark berry fruit. Moderate finish with warming spices and gaminess. Smoothed out with some air time. Not too bad, but wasn't overly thrilling. Interesting for the price.

Surprising complexity for a very inexpensive wine. It needs air, as it got better the longer it sat through the course of the meal (a good 'ol Yankee pot roast). Nice nose of dark plums and currants with hint of raspberry and strawberry (almost floral), and noticeable mix of forest floor earthiness. The taste is a little shallow at first, but as it fills out, the darker fruits are noticeable along with the minerality and earthiness. Finish is solid with well integrated tannins. Outstanding QPR. I bought a case to be my house wine for a while and I am not disappointed.

Spanish Wine Dinner (Farpointe Cellar): The nose had crushed rock and licorice, black currant and leather, and a little spice and vanilla. The palate was slightly tannic, with minerals and leather, black currant and licorice, and a very gamey finish.

Decanted about 4 hours. The nose had black currant and pepper, some tar and cherry, and just a touch of vanilla. The palate had a lot of tannins, with tar and black currant, pepper and oak, and a little cherry on the finish.

This 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah blend is an excellent value with a moderate price of $12.99. I enjoyed it very much for its complexity and changing characteristics during dinner. It is a ruby red wine, with strong oak hints from 9 months of barreling with hints of rasberry and strawberry, which I enjoy. Interestingly my wife did not feel the same about the wine (rating 85)and I think this is due to the tannen and oak, which is stronger than in most wines in this price range. I suspect that this wine would improve with breathing but to be honest it disappeared too fast from our table.

Garnet center with ruby rim. Nose of dark cherry, rasberry, licorice, herbs & spice. On the palate medium dry body, tart cherry, medium acid, smooth but present drying tannin, medium length spicy finish and some heat. Similar to southern CDR. Have it with food. Rounded out on day 2 with better fruit and integration - score 88.

85% Grenache/15% Syrah. A lot going on here for such an inexpensive wine. Notes of earth, dark berries, and sage. Medium finish. Paired well with Margherita pizza and fresh basil. An amazing QPR at $9. I should have bought more.

At $15 this wine is a no brainer. A Grenache-Syrah blend it's nicely aged with modest tannins, dark smokey fruit, some tar, and very mild oak. It's the epitome of daily drinker: meant to be pop, poured, and enjoyed. Right now.
The best thing is that while it's a no brainer at $15 it's actually a $7 bottle of wine.

This 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah blend is another home rune for the Capcanes Estates. It seems that you can not go wrong with any of their wines. They are mostly great values and their pricing pretty much matches up with the quality of the offering. In this case my 88 is conservative and will likely improve as time goes on. this wine should be drinkable for another five years. I love the richness of the flavor, the wonderful aroma and the power of the slightly higher alcohol content.

Wow! A $9 bottle that's worth at least 4 times the price. Dark purple in glass, almost oily legs with a rich nose of earth, red and black fruit and an exploding palate of early rasberry, folllowed by blueberry, loam and red dirt, finishing with complexity and length, what's not to like. Hope they have more, this was a real surprise. Spanish wonder, like a complex Las Rocas.

This was the last wine in a reasonably priced spanish tasting, and we were all very impressed with it. It's a little acidic upon opening the bottle, and it's a little lightweight overall, but that can be a good thing. It's so ready to drink now and am not sure if it will improve with age - maybe not. A great bargain - I had to buy a case.

very muted for a grenache and less enjoyable than others that I've had, but for the price it is a good wine that is drinkable now...don't think this one will get any better with cellaring.

Good QPR. Fairly straightforward juice but provides typical varietal notes. Some herbal notes, cherry, perhaps just slightly baked. For a wine at this price I'm happy it's not dripping with oak-vanilla out of the bottle. This is a pop and pour. The finish closes quickly with drying tannins. I agree with notes indicating that the wine seems to fade within hours of opening the bottle. I think this would work well with marinated or spice-rubbed grilled beef or even lamb.

Great color and downhill from there. The nose is of band-aids, some muted dark fruit and soil. On the palate this has a grainy feel to it and fairly thin. Some good cherry comes through but is out of balance and a bit harsh. Not my style. Pretty disapointing for an Eric Solomon wine.

Dark cherry fruit, tense on the palate, assertive tannins that are higher than the fruit, along with acid that sits above the fruit as well. Hard, in other words but well done in that style. If you like the style I certainly think it hits the price tag of $14 really well.

85% Grenache and 15% Syrah blend aged in American and French oak barrels for 9 months. Decanted for 2 hours. Very consistent notes to my tasting in March of 2009. Dark and deep ruby in color. The nose was full of moist soil and dark fruits with a bouquet of vanilla and oak Good acidity and present but not overwhelming tannins. Medium bodied the flavors on the palate were black cherry, herbs, plum and oak. Pretty short on the finish with black cherry and herbs lingering. Nothing to write home to Mom about but a nice drinking wine for the price. After tasting and jotting down these notes I went back and looked at my previous TN"s for comparison and this go around the wine got dinged in nose/bouquet and flavor by a point each. Though not complex at my tasting in March of 09 it was even less so this time. 50+5+10+15+6=86

This wine holds the dubious distinction as the only wine I've ever drunk that got worse as I drank it. Lush nose with lots of plum and black fruit. And its best left for sniffing. The texture is akin to sandpaper and the taste is thin offering no complexity a just a light, harsh burnt cherry taste. Whoever rated this a 91 at Total Wine must have just graduated from Franzia.

Raspberry, cherry and red plum aromas, with some earthy funky notes; luscious red and purple fruit flavors, some earthy funk again, building through the midpalate into an explosive, dark, very long finish, with crunchy, integrated tannins. Delicious, and an incredible QPR. Went surprisingly well with Publix rotisserie lemon pepper chicken, which itself is a good buy.

Overall, I enjoyed the wine. At first, the wine was a little sour, but it improved as the air opened it up. Rich fruit, especially cherry, with medium tannins, could be better with food.

This surprised me, pleasantly, in that the tannins are nicely integrated to that point that it is drinking well right now, having been opened for two hours. Not much of a nose, but the red fruit comes through in the glass. Had with various tapas dishes as a precursor to a not-quite-ready-for-primetime 2004 Rioja.

Wow...How did I end up buying this wine? I had tasted it 10/22/08 and had panned it. My impressions tonight are no different. What in the world is Jay Miller smokin'? This is very good indeed, showing rich red and black fruit and a nice density, though the tart and woody finish is a little strong for my tastes. Had a glass with a couple of cheeses before dinner and a second glass with my spouse's pasta bolognese, to which it stood up very nicely. Certainly a food wine. Drinking well now; I'll be interested to to see what develops with my remaining two bottles.

Much better than the previous bottle (same lot#, go figure). Lots of bright red fruit and a tannic grip on the finish, very enjoyable. The first bottle must have been flawed, although it seemed varietally correct, just not very good. This is a big wine, but not too jammy as the fruit comes across very clean and pure.

A bold wine with strong tannins and an intense structure. Depth of the old vines is prominent with a beautiful maroon color. Lots of powerful fruit with just a hint of anise and some cedar. Jammy and intense, this wine could use some more time or perhaps some air before drinking. A touch hot, keeping it from 90, but a solid wine and a terrific value.

Looks like it has all the right materials when reading the bottle, however whats inside doesn't live up to the billing. Wine is pleasant and smells/tastes like grenache but doesn't have any real complexity or depth to it. Pretty average bottle of wine all in all. I really wanted to love this wine given its local availability, price and the fact that I usually love Rhone style blends, too bad. BBQ/patio level of quality. Decanted for one hour prior to drinking. Hard to believe this is the same wine the professional reviewers tasted.
Going to buy another bottle to try. I wonder if they do multiple bottling runs, may explain the divergence in impressions. lot number L8161E

Dark purple color with nice brilliancy and a little transparency. The nose at this point is very vegetal, showing beets and shitake mushroom, along with black berries and possibly some tobacco leave. The taste is so pleasant right from the start, parading beautiful black fruit, dark cherries, black berries, little hints of black currant, then changing to a different kind of black.. kalamata olives, and ending with strong, bitter tannins, tobacco-like; a cuban ending of the finest kind. Medium to long. Nice tannins!

Decanted for 2 hours before drinking this 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah blend that was aged in American and French oak barrels for 9 months before bottling. On the pour and in the glass it was a clear, deep ruby color that clung to the glass with very pronounced legs. The nose produced some bordeaux style funk with dust, dark fruits and oak with just a hint of green pepper. On the palate it had integrated but present tannins that did not distract, a bright acidity and a solid medium bodied mouth feel. The flavor profile produced black cherry, plum, oak and some vegetal elements. The finish was short to medium with cherry, pepper and dust lingering. There was nothing jumping out of this wine to make me have a "wow" or "a-ha" type of experience but it was very good. I am not entirely sure how this will age but it will be interesting to find out. I paid $9.99 a bottle and for the price it is a very good wine. As I scored it I was surprised to find it at an 88. Like grafstrb below I think it drinks below the score a bit. 50+5+11+16+6=88

I tried this on 4 different occasions over 2 days. I kept feeling like I just needed to catch with the right pairing or after it had a little time to open up. What can I say? It just isn't for me. Very serious wine for the price. This Grenache/Syrah blend struch me almost like a baby CDP (or at least a really good cotes du rhone). Tastes just like a Southern Rhone as others have mentioned. Nice smoke, dark fruits, oak, and tea aromas. There's a little green streak in there as well which is quite nice. Really good Grenache medium body. Peppery finish. Nice tannins and the fruit is singing. Moderate but balanced acidity. Good juice if you like good Southern Rhone wines. What a value! This wine performs well above its price point. Decanted about 45 minutes before the first glass. Nice, but the second was much better. Plenty of the earthy flavors I love in Spanish reds. Deep garnet color with cherry and cola flavors and a nice spiciness. A great complement to a hearty steak rigatoni dish. -- decanted immediately before tasting -- -- tasted non-blind over 2 hours -- -- 85% Grenache, 15% Syrah --
NOSE: "pretty" smelling bouquet: red fruits, oak, slightly-sugary backdrop, and a hint of funk.
BODY: ruby color of medium-deep depth; medium bodied
TASTE: A bit too grapey on the palate for my tastes, but I do like the flavors of concentrated plum and ripe blueberry; slight secondary element of Bdx-like funk; not alcoholic; the finish is medium-short in length. This well-balanced wine is solid in most ways, but impressive in none...for my preferences, this actually drinks a couple points below its score.

Heavy leather and currant nose. Mouth-coating, inky, chewy licorice blueberry with a little medicinal tar on the short, thick finish. Supremely dense, it will be interesting to see how this wine evolves in 5 years. Unclear if it has the balance to improve. Very good if a little over the top...wine as a meal.

As others have written, this needs a little time to soften up. That said, a welcome dash of oak seasoning makes this already more palatable to me than Celler el Masroig's Sola Fred, which was aged in stainless steel. I can't imagine this blowing anyone away, but at least it convinced me not to give up on Montsant entirely.

Initially this wine did not impress me. It had decent but simple fruit overshadowed by harsh tannins. I put the cork back in and forgot about it for two weeks. Opaque purple/black. Closed nose (even after two hours) of wood and underbrush. Full-bodied but uninspiring on the palate. To be certain, there is dark fruit (with medium acidity) on this wine. A dark ruby color. Decanted for 2 hours and drank over about the same time period. Initially the nose was very floral with violets. Then came the black pepper, spice, dark fruits and a hint of vanilla oak. The longer this was open, the more the fruit showed through. Very silky elegant and lithe on the palate. Black fruits. Very nice acidity to balance the fruits and a long lingering finish. Definitely a solid QPR.

Artificial cork. Terrific acidity on this that gives it some length. Drank better on the 2nd night when it came off like a 5 year old Southern Rhone from a good vintage. Picked up some nice complexities showing some dried fruits among rocky notes and dark wood. Good tannic structure that would entice a couple more years in bottle but there is the artificial cork again. Excellent for the money.

Wow, really mixed feelings on this wine. I expected to really like it since it's right up my alley. First thing, let it breathe. Second thing, make sure you don't drink this at summertime room temperature. It needs a little cool down. Not so impressive on the nose. Flavors on the palate are nice: plummy, a little bit velvety, and some light milk chocoloate notes. Nicely balanced between some acid and tannins, and a ripe fruit sweet effect. A nice wine. I just expected a bit more.

Dark purple in color. Spice and dark red fruits on the nose. Nice full fruit profile, mainly raspberries, the oak is unobtrusive, a little soft and unstructured. Not overpowering or heavy. Overall, a fun wine to drink and a terrific QPR.

Dark schisty fruit on the nose. Mineral. Made from scatttered old vine plots inside the Montsant. Apperently see part French and American oak. One day open. Lots of raspberry fruit, still dark and schisty, the tannins have smoothed out. For the price it is a great value. Around $15.

Color: Deep ruby Nose: Expressive, with nice blackberry and dark cherry. Taste: Medium bodied, with a nice, full mouth feel. Distinctive. soft tannins integrate delicious blackberry and dark cherry. Finish: Rich and long, with anise and blueberry peeking through. Very nice QPR - a delight at $12, I'd expect this wine to drink well for at least another 3 years, though it is drinking beautifully right now. Paired perfectly with grilled hangar steak.

New D.O.C. to me, Montsant, Mas Donís is composed of 80% Grenache, and 20% Shiraz. This 2005 is a bit young to drink. Shows a nice ruby red color with nice legs in glass. The nose is fabulous, with aromas of garlic mixed with black sherries, white chocolate, and black pepper. A full bodied wine with expressive flavor profile, it's a little bit one-dimentional due to the strong dominance of the grenache, but shows beautiful balance, great fruit, solid tannins, very vegetable aspects, and a small amout of heat. Some oak, pleasant, not bad. Great mouthfill, exceptional QPR, a food wine. Would go deliciously with turkey on thanksgiving.

Second night - much better - more aromatic, smoother, integrated, tartness muted, cherry flavors enhanced. 87.

While the wine is certainly drinkable and would definitely be enjoyable with tailgating BBQ fare, it in no way merits the score that WA has bestowed upon it. Drink now-12/12.

Nice effort.

As close as you can get to a 90 without quite getting there.

New D.O.C. to me, Montsant, Mas Donís is composed of 80% Grenache, and 20% Shiraz.
