  • Deep garnet color. Nose is a beautiful bouquet of red fruit (mainly strawberry with some cherry), cedar, vanilla, with a hint of tobacco and sweet spice. Even at a young age, this wine is a delight in the mouth, with the red fruit up front, followed by vanilla, oak, black pepper, and a slightly bitter but pleasant black tea finish. Medium body and good tannins, very well balanced the whole way through, even only five years out. With some air, violets/floral notes come into play on the nose and on the palate. Really lovely wine, one of my recent favorites. Great now, but should be stellar in 5 to 10 years.

  • When opened and tasted, it was spectacular - dark, vivid fruit, nervous tension and impressive depth. I made the mistake of slow-ox for 5 hours then decanting for two more. The wine became painfully shy and parsimonious. Even at that, it is clear this will be a wonderful wine. Its dark core holds so much promise. Tannins are integrated and the acid is balanced. If I make the mistake of opening another in the next 2 or 3 years, I will open and pour, not wanting to give it time to retreat.

  • Dark purple in colour. Notes of cedar, black fruit and dark chocolate. Great wine even at this young age.

  • Nice nose of cedar, green pepers, mokka, black fruit... Nice ripe and integrated tannin, black and red fruit, very nice but waaaay too young as the Cabernet Franc seem to be very present and these green peper tannin are not yet integrated... Wait for 10 more years!!

  • This clear wine was opened at home. It was mid deep garnet red in colour with a nose of ripe red cherries, some white pepper and a bit of bandaids. In the glass were flavours of red cherries and quite a noticeable amount of chocolate. These was a slight sourness to the wine. The tannins on this were very strong while the acidity was high. Give these some more time before opening.

  • This wine was clear and garnet red in colour with a nose of dark cherries mixed with some plums. In the glass were flavours of sour (ripe) cherries mixed with a slight touch of balsamic vinegar. The tannins and acidity on this wine were quite strong.

  • Beautiful dense black fruits. We compared it with 2005 vintage. Compared to 2005, which was still youthful and in its early peak in my opinion, 2019 was pretty closed. It showed good potential.

  • Dark color, full body, nice bouquet, 14.0%, California comes to Italy, pure fruit with tannin to balance and keep it interesting, each sip fills your mouth with flavor, however the wine could be from anywhere and lacks the terroir of a particular place, drank with my pizza with prosciutto and mushrooms, probably won’t drink again due to the price, try La Massa for $20. Ciao.

  • From a half bottle: a great Super Tuscan blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% CS and 5% CF. Tobacco, cherry, leather, plum, pencil shavings, cassis, well balanced oak, dark fruit, medium plus body, superb long finish. Tad young but already so good after 3 hours of air time.

  • Fourth time tasting this vintage of Tig this year. Enough already, right? While young, it is so delicious especially after a 2 hour decant. It is tough to resist now because it is so well made, but I know I will be rewarded if I will just be patient. Therefore, I will layoff of these for a while. Maybe drink the 2020 in the interim since it is more approachable now while my 2019s age?

  • Other tasting notes here highlighted that this was drinking well young, so - recalling the great '83 and '85 vintages of Tignanello that I drank in 1990 when I lived in Italy (and cost ~$20!) - I took the risk and ordered a bottle of the '19 as we sat down at the restaurant. Even though we decanted the wine, the first sip confirmed that things were already practically ready to go.

By an hour in, it was hard to imagine how more air could further improve the wine. It had no rough edges at all. One of my companions thought of it as having a particularly "feminine" quality. Leaving gender stereotypes aside, I will say that it was soft and elegant, with medium+ body and a long, lingering finish. Cabernet Sauvignon led the way in flavor, but it wasn't a pure varietal sensation. It took a lot of discipline to make the bottle last among the three us until the main course.

It was a pleasure to experience a "pop 'n pour" luxury cuvee, since many other great wines wouldn't have opened until after we paid our check. It does make me wonder about ageability, but since I don't have any bottles at home, that's not really a personal concern. QPR is also an issue, but this is as close to a "sure hit" as you could get on a restaurant list - that's definitely worth something.

And how does the '19 compare to the vintages of old? Believe it or not, I can still remember those wines, because they were striking. The '83 was more of a Sangiovese year, while the '85 leaned more on the Cabernet side. The '19 is less showy than the '85 was at the same age, but more integrated. Frankly, I preferred the more "serious" '83 to either, but unfortunately I never bought more because at that time in my late '20's, I thought $20 was a lot to pay for a bottle of wine.

  • Similar to my two prior tasting notes. This is almost exotic at this stage in its lifespan especially after a one hour decant. Where the best of old and new world collide. Delicious. Great vintage of Tig.

  • Drinking great with 2 hour decant. Smooth and powerful with long finish. Will be interesting to see how it evolves as I am not sure you will get the secondary/tertiary notes of an aged wine, given the forwardness of the dominate fruit profile that exists today. Modern style.

  • Decanted for an hour and it was ready. Really drinking well now. Could cellar for years but not sure I can wait on the second bottle.

  • This is a beautifully made, polished wine. Dark ruby color, boysenberry on the nose, along with sweet fruit and spice. Medium plus mid palate weight, medium plus sweetness with nice acidity and soft tannins through the finish. This is modern wine making at its finest.

  • Highly engaging nose of blueberries, cherries, and some herbal tones that speak to the Sangiovese. Palate soft, rich and silky, more cherries, a little tobacco, has a med+ finish. Clearly reserves hidden here but enjoyable in an understated way. I was surprised to see no tannins, but don’t drink much young Tignanello. This is what people mean by polished - modern, sleek, hard to argue with but ultimately a bit more crafted than I prefer. Compared to the traditional BdMs and Chiantis I love this seemed almost wimpy. Also not sure it will develop into a marvel. Still I see the quality even if not a style I look for.

  • Decanted upon initial taste. This wine proceeded to evolve over the course of the evening. Shows great potential.

  • Took a little while to open up. Strawberry, blackberry, blackberry tart, some doughiness, spice, vanilla. Finish had a noticeable kind of pureness of fruit, felt elegant.

  • Similar to my tasting note a few weeks ago. A fantastic wine from a great vintage that just needs 5+ years to develop in the cellar. When a young wine shows that it has all the right stuff in all the right places, it gives you confidence in what it will become in the future. If drinking now, decant and drink with a fatty/salty meal.

  • This was really delicious. It tastes like a young classified left bank to me. Just barely entering the drinking window but I think it will hold forever. Polished, gently extracted raspberry and cherry fruit, oak is not at all obtrusive. Silky tannins but will surely develop complexity with age (Im betting it needs 10+ years for that). This is another of those well made, sort of post-modern wines that are crafted to be enjoyed on opening by lacking the tough tannins of old, not overwrought, and full of class.

  • 93 points today, but this will warrant a higher score with 5 or more years of age on it. Incredible fruit concentration but in balance with the acidity and firm but sweet tannin on the finish. No doubt this will age gracefully and only improve. I'm glad I have some of this in my cellar. Excellent wine.

  • bright ruby-purple color, nose laden with elegant dark spices, bramble and cherry, clove, on the palate very tight and difficult to read whilst remaining enjoyable, dark sweet fruit, plum notes, great length, I wish there had been more time to observe this and watch it come together but the two key takeaways are that this is tighter than usual in youth, but also with great promise, for all the prominent sweet fruit- the tension and herbal notes from the Sangiovese are here in full force as well.

    (*****), 2026++

  • Opened in Palermo, Sicily this Tignanello clearly is going to be a great wine with some maturing. The aromatic nose was packed with fruit - black cherry, blueberry with hints of strawberry and balsamic. The palette felt as if it was lacking some integration as bright red cherries were overshadowed by spices, tobacco, vanilla and earthiness that are yet to be fully integrated with the fruit. With very light oak on the finish and grippy tannins this is a 92 right now, but could emerge as a 95-96 point wine down the line. Eager to revisit in 2-3 years time.

  • One hour double decant. Very deep rosy ruby color. Blueberry, wild strawberry, baby’s breath (flower), milk chocolate malt, granite, and lemon zest. Dry, silky, full bodied palate. Full, plush tannins on the longish finish.

Excellent Super Tuscan. It may have been elevated ever so slightly by the great food we were having. Very impressive for its youth. Blend of CS and Sangiovese.

  • This wine has incredible structure and needs to age. We found it at a restaurant in Ohio for $140 a bottle. There was no way to pass up this price. It was complex yet needs some age to mellow out the tannins. No wonder it was a WS top 10 wine this past year.

  • Great wine. The nose on it when you open it is magnificent. 92 now, but has tremendous upside. Will probably wait at least another 5-7 years to open another one.

  • Absolutely gorgeous nose with forest berries: wild strawberries and bilberries with their stems and leaves. There is also violet flower and tomato leaf. Oak leaf rather than wood and just a hint of vanilla. A lot of fruit on the palate with blackberry and Sangiovese’s cherry note appearing. Touch of porcini mushroom. Oak and tannin are still quite aggressive, making it a little bitter. Pretty long finish of cherry jam, leather and tomato leaf.
Alas, it is too young, with age will get a higher score.
    12/18

  • Black cherry, red cherry and red raspberry on a nose that showed great aromatics overall as well as depth of flavor. Between medium and full bodied (14% ABV) and nicely open and rounded upfront with a pretty mix of softer red cherry and brighter red cherry - the sangiovese really shining through. Mid-body has exceptional depth, adding black cherry as well as a touch of plum towards the back. Excellent integration on the backside with tannins and other structural elements blending almost seamlessly with the fruit, lifting it and allowing it to expand through the finish. What really stood out was the clarity and depth of the fruit and the beautiful overall expression. This wine was decanted and drunk over the course of three hours and felt more and more complete over that time. Clearly accessible now but has the potential to be even better in years to come. (Restaurant Limoni; Munich, Germany)

  • Definitely a bit young, but promises to be a powerhouse in 10-15 years. Grippy tannins that will surely soften and the fruit which lingers for minutes will benefit from some complimentary tertiary characteristics. Very well integrated. An exceptional vintage. Can’t wait to try the others and compare!

  • Beautiful sour cherry on the nose. Very young and primary but already a super elegant wine with structure and a very long finish. Will be amazing with some more complexity.

  • The 2019 is elegant, restrained, and beautifully balanced. This vintage seems less extracted than some of the other vintages I’ve tasted. The fruit (cherry, bramble) is currently at the forefront and there is more than enough of it to counter the ripe tannins. I found the use of oak to be well-judged and not intrusive.

I expected this to be too overpowering to enjoy now but curiosity won out. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. The wine will soften, integrate further, and evolve with bottle age - there’s immense potential. I think 2019 will go down as one of the best examples of this wine for those who seek finesse over sheer power. It will be hard to resist opening another bottle (or two) while we await the wine’s peak.

  • 2023-03-23. Way too young.

2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • Had more expectations than this. Drank from a half bottle - perhaps to young but felt like the fruit couldn’t really carry all the oak - too bad fruit or yet too young? Decanted for two hours before drinking

  • Overpriced / hyped - wine was fine, but nothing special nor complex from my tasting. That said it did become more rustic and smoother as it opened in the glass and decanter. Rating could be lower if I really considered value related to the experience

  • Tignanello 19 (80% Sangiovese, 15% Cab Sauvignon, 5% Cab Franc) out of guinea pig half-bottle - seriously memorable comme d’hab w next-level sophistication, weight & attitude. Yet, offering just a glimpse of what’s to come. Astonishing nose, deep tart red & black cherries, striking iron, earth & tobacco, violet. Smooth, seductive & finely textured full-bodied palate, black & blue fruit, graphite, return of iron, expanding w richness & intensity. Effortless, complex & compelling forever & ever finish. Standout!

2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • In my opinion Tignanello always underwhelms. In the 19 there’s just too much oak present detracting from any fruit or nuance. There’s a decent amount of Cabernet in the blend here and blind I’d have guessed $50 Super Tuscan or Napa. Tobacco, cloves, cherry, vanilla…. Nice creamy texture with moderate tannin/acid. Good but a struggle for well over $100.

  • Pnp - and believe it or not this showed well despite fierce tannic grip. Somehow the currant/tobacco core showed though and the tannins were not harsh enough to ruin it. The fruit is there in spades so there is plenty of time to let this integrate where it will be one of the great Tigs. I loved the 2016 and although this does not give as much pleasure right now, it’s still a knockout and will be even better in5-10 years.
Score: 94. Relative to expectations: ++

  • Decanted for three hours. Supple and yet very polished, with length and finely knit tendencies. Silky tannins on the back end. Red currants, fresh tobacco, wet earth and violets. A medium body and an addicting acidity, this shows more feminine qualities than the stellar ‘18. Designed for the cellar. Drink 2025 -.

  • I opened one so you don't have to. Put it back in the cellar and grab something older, this needs more time. Tannins for days, acidity to last decades, a beautiful wine to come.

  • Opened and finished the rest of the bottle in 2 days. Mix of bright red fruit and dark fruit. Lovely herbal and tomato leaves character with savoury chocolaty finish. Velvety tannins structure, great acidity and perfect balance. 94+

  • Not decanted. Wine for New Year's Eve in one of our favorite restaurants. As expected, the wine is still very young and primary. Nevertheless, even at this early stage, you can tell it's a great Tignanello and it will certainly get better with a few years in the cellar. 93 pts. at the moment.

  • Deep dark reddish garnet in color, bordering on opaque. Initially reticent nose eventually developing into full, fragrant & attractive nose of dark fruit aromas of cherries, black currants, mulberries with dusty/earthy & cedar/tobacco overtones, spices, herbs, olives, cocoa & a hint of oak/vanilla. Full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, rich, ripe dark fruit flavors of cherries, blackberries and boysenberries, spices, herbs, minerals, cocoa, some oak & vanilla. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well with decanting and extended airing (+90 minutes) but needs much more time to develop fully & completely at which time it may merit a higher score (96+).

  • The wine looks garnet colored. The legs are slow. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like cherry, plum and clove. It tastes like black currant (cassis), cherry, plum, coffee and clove. The body is medium/full. The wine has silky texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has high acidity. Still very young but couldn't resist trying one bottle and put the rest away for years to come.

  • Appearnce: Deep ruby.
Nose: Med+ intensity, dark plum, pepper, rose, dusty, dark chocalate, dragon eye fruit, woody, kirch.
Palate: Dry, high acidity, high alcohol, med+ body, high tannins (Velvety), med+intensity, dark plum, chocalate, dark cherry, long finish.
Compared to the Haut Batailley, this wine is darker and has more velvety tannins structure. We rate is 94pts at this moment as the two wine has similar quality but different style.

  • Medium ruby.

Pronounced on the nose with ripe and rich blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry, raspberry, red cherry, dried herbs, mint, licorice, tomato leaf, cedar, cinammon, nutmeg, black tea, hint of prune, and earth. Developing.

Pronounced and dry on the palate. High acidity, high ripe tannins, high alcohol, medium plus body, lovely long finish.

Too young (based on enomatic 50ml pour anyway!). Can see the potential but definitely needs some time.

  • Not ready to drink, but wonderful fruit and strong tannins, spicy, black cherry, with strong acid that will all come together in a few years. This is a bottle that will reward with patience. Sense that there are a lot of elements in the bottle that will expand as time goes on; spice, cinnamon, acid, black fruit. Score is for potential. On paper, Mr. Nam's birthday.

  • Nose covered by red berries, smokey oak and a herbal touch. Transition to palate is smooth where cherries and the oak plays main role together with the herbal notes mainly from eucalyptus and salvia. Grippy tannins, medium body and long length. Not same structure and complexity as 18, but more of an elegant medium bodied sangiovese.
