Annual Jadot Dinner - this time with Thibault Gagey (Sepia - Chicago): 96/97/02 - Jadot crushed 97 and you can safely bet a 97 will outperform a 96 side-by-side, which was once again the case here. Gorgeous old-vine, fleshy, concentrated fruit with so much meaty complexity. Nothing out of balance with fresh structure holding the abundant fruit together.

Almost as good as my first bottle of this. The beautiful floral nose was easily 97 points at peak. This bottle showed amazingly well next to the 97 Clos de Beze. This was more subtle and feminine, absolutely peaked with the pork chop at about 1-2 hours open and then subsided a bit but still showed well the following day.

Wines Tasted at HDH Auction; 2/28/2020-2/29/2020 (Spiaggia - Chicago IL): Popped and poured. Enjoyable, but very firm and backward. So cork reinserted into the remaining 1/2 bottle, to be revisited the next day. Alas the wine was tired and oxidized on Day Two. Inconsistent with previous bottles.

3rd Annual Jadot with Frederic Barnier (Booth One - Chicago, IL): Another amazing 1997 from Jadot with deep, rich and intense aromatics of red and black cherry, with iron and spice. The palate is so concentrated and powerfully flavorful. Densely packed while showing precise, complex flavors. Fantastic. Blind, I slightly preferred this to the Beze.

Louis Jadot Dinner with Frédéric Barnier (Booth One - Chicago IL): Served blind in 1997 flight. Massive black fruit with intense concentration. Some diners thought this the WOTF, but I found it more reliant on its power, less on its complexity. Still, clearly an exciting wine for now and the future.

Jadot 1997 Dinner: A Jacques Lardière Miracle (RPM Steak - Chicago IL): Open hour+ before serving. Black cherry and plum with subtle spice and great textures. served blind to the tasting group, most didn't think this from Gevrey based on its charm and style points vs meaty concentration. But both characteristics were more apparent after open 3+ hours. Wonderful now, with upside.

Started out great, with sweet red fruit, good acidity and balance and hints of good texture and complexity to come. However, it never quite delivered, and the fruit faded after the midpoint. Maybe there was a storage issue with this bottle. If not, it was past its prime.

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Served double blind alongside the same from the 99 vintage, which was unfortunately flawed. This however is another excellent JAdot 1997, always a consistent overperforming wine. Ripe fruit with lots of power, but everything in great balance from start to finish. Very dense with mostly black fruit throughout, some earthy notes middle to finish. Served mid-afternoon, then stayed largely the same when finished 6 hours later.

Another great '97 from Jadot, which is really showing what those old, old Chapelle vines can do. Like Benjamin Button it kept getting younger and fresher in the glass, starting out with a punch of old-Burgundy barnyard funk but eventually exhibiting gorgeously pure aromas of sweet, liqueur-like cherry and raspberry fruit. It's full and rich, not the most finessed grand cru but big in scale with a powerful stony earth minerality which at first is front-and-center, but over the course of the bottle steps to the side as those pretty fruit notes come out, which are totally pure and peak ripeness without going over the edge. Amazing what Jadot pulled off this vintage.

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Served double blind to tasting group, alongside Jadot 2001 Gevrey-Chambertin CSJ. This was far superior to the CSJ, another example of Jadot's exceptional 1997s. Black and red cherry aromas with huge spice and gamy character. Bigger fruit on palate with lots of density. Subtle earth hints add nuance but still getting better, this had a deep and intense finish.

Tasted blind vs. its 1996 counterpart. Ripe black and red cherry aromas with big spice. Same fruit profile on palate, with even bigger spice . Long, powerful and incredibly elegant. Truly sensational wine. Most others thought this was the 1996, but my prior experience with Jadot 1997s made me realize the better wine was more likely the 1997.

Jadot (and Clair Dau) Chapelle-Chambertin Dinner with Thibault Gagey (Sepia - Chicago IL): In vertical. Great aromatics, still youthful. Great concentration with very good flavors. More may still emerge with further cellar time. Few producer's 97s consistently crush their 96s, but that is routine for Jadot.

A very rich, dark, somber and brooding wine. Serious stuff, check back in 10 years.

Drinking great after a few hours of air in the bottle. Rich, complex strawberry/pectin jam fruit with a little leather.
I really enjoyed and am glad to have one more bottle.
