Gosh this is a fabulous Cru Beaujolais. I’m liking it more than the ‘19, which I had a few months ago. In comparison, it seems more structured and while its fruit is quite ripe, it’s balanced by the firm but ripe tannins and bright acidity. Drinking this confirms that Foillard really knows the Morgon appellation and the Cote du Py, and how to produce the finest wines from it. Will it improve with age? Possibly, but given its current exuberance, spice notes, and explosive fruit, why wait!
This wine was not as big and ripe as I would have expected for a 2020 vintage, relative to a 2020 Clos de la Roilette we had recently.
Got red fruit and charcoal on the nose with some smoke. Palate was an explosion of citrus with lots of smoke. The wine is obviously still young and has not put on lots of complexity, but it's an excellent wine.

Drank after about 2 hours of air. Lots of red fruits, strawberries, raspberry liqueur, florals, and gravel. Vibrant, tangy, and juicy dark red fruits in the palate with savory minerality coming through on the back end. Just as nice as my first bottle; will plan to give my others a little more age before diving back in.

Opened four hours in advance. Drank a small glass. A deep ruby core fading to a medium ruby outer edge. There’s a wild, raw, slightly untamed edge to the dark fruit and berries that are beautifully laced with a wonderfully perfumed scent of fresh violets. A stark yet alluring contrast from a stunning wine.

Dark in color, in a 2020 vintage where many other Beaujolais I’ve had have been pretty saturated, sometimes overblown, this feels amazingly classic. A lovely nose, some nice spices, maybe a hint of bubblegum but not to distraction; the palate is controlled, with lively, fresh, crisp dark fruit, the spice is here as well, reminds me a bit of the 2016, and probably my favorite since the 2014 vintage.
Next night: just a little juicier, but so flavorful, well balanced, plain tasty. Still my favorite since the 2016 vintage.

Eighteen months since my last bottle, this vintage is coming along nicely. The nose is far more open now, black cherry, violet, and a wisp of smoke, very clean. M+ acidity and tannins still dry towards the finish. A pleasure to drink, great pairing with grilled steak, and it should continue to improve for at least five years.

Seductively smooth with great fruit, thrilling acidity and oh so fresh. Amazing glou glou wine with no harsh edges. Black Raspberries roll off my tongue as I write this. Definitely a step up from the Morgon. I don’t want to tell anyone but the secret is already out though no one seems to have heard it.

OG Lunch - Holiday Party (Lonny's Place, Mpls): Medium dark red color. Small glass. Crunchy red and blue fruit with a healthy herbaceousness, spicy, tart, ripe, nice texture. Needs some more time to really even out.

Orange rind, red and blue fruit, herbs on the nose, with more and more of the gravelly minerality I love in Morgon coming out over time. The palate was all on tart raspberries and herbs with zingy mouthwatering acidity leading into a focused finish. Nowhere near as big a wine as the 2018, and I only felt the ripeness here as a real sense of energy and vibrancy. Great wine with a lot of depth; glad to have many more bottles.

I’m always blown away by how good Foillards wines are. This is no exception. Richer and riper than usual but the fruit is still so pure and lively, there’s floral notes and real depth here. This is going to be outstanding. Well, it already is.

This 100% Gamay from the famous Côte du Py lieu-dit is produced by one of the most emblematic winegrowers of the Beaujolais vineyard, Jean Foillard. The wine needed about 30 minutes in the carafe to open up and reduce its rusticity then it was drunk a little chilly during the Sunday lunch. Very expressive and complex nose with plenty of blue and red wild sour berries, a ton of freshly cut herbs, a bit of hay also, violet and a frank pencil lead minerality. Medium-bodied, the palate is rich, carried by supple and delicate tannins, which roll off the tongue and make the mouthfeel so voluptuous and flattering. Powerful flavours of stone fruits, lots of fresh herbs and a dash of mint. The finish is chewy and salivating, with a high aromatic precision, on blond tobacco and a slight earthy side. This Morgon is a true delight! This is another success for Foillard! [Photo on Instagram]

Wow. Once again, Foillard Cote du Py scales to the top of my favorite sub-$35 red list. This must come down to a strong personal preference, but I absolutely adore this wine in most vintages. Flavors of dehydrated red fruit (raspberry, strawberry), bramble, tart cherry or cranberry, moist forest floor, iron. Extraordinarily complex for a lightweight red. Drank great upon pop and pour and only marginally better three hours later. Highest recommendation caveated by my idiosyncratic taste preferences.

14% alcohol. Soft wax top; the cork underneath is very short but of pretty good quality. Medium colour with a youthful purple tinge. The nose is very aromatic with a variety of berries ranging from redcurrant to darker and even dried wild fruit; there is also a floral component (peony rose) and some liquorice. The mouth has a searing intensity that verges on painful (in a nice way of course, and no, I am not a masochist); the dominant fruit is redcurrant, and so maybe a tad less complex that the nose. Excellent acidity, and the alcohol level is hard to credit. Good grip with even some slight bitterness in the aftertaste. One of the purest expressions of Gamay that I ever had.

Gorgeous ripe red fruit and deep color. On opening, tight but not from tannins or acidity— just reluctant to open. After opening up, it’s ripe black cherries, some sweet cherry jam and a faint granite to remind you it’s gamay. Really awesome mouth feel with a touch of sweet glycerin on finish. Doesn’t have that overwhelming granite quality of other gamay because the fruit more than balances it out. Rich and silky smooth. This is what I remember Morgon tasting like 20 years ago. Easily my favorite Cru Beaujolais in awhile.

Perhaps more prepared about the large scale of this wine today, I found it much better than last time. Yes, there is some alcohol poking out as it warms, but drink it on the cooler side, and it's pretty delicious. Showing more complexity than the 2021 Lapierre Morgon drank the night before. I think this will improve with time, but it is a larger scaled wine for Foillard.

This bottle was concentrated, leaving an impression of sucrosity, but unfortunately flawed by a little mouse at the end. Paired next to a Jean Paul Brun VV 2021, which I greatly preferred.

Gamey mushroomy nose with red and blue fruit… Strawberry, cherry hits upfront with a hefty dose of acidity and some snarky tannins… noticeable alcohol note on the end… Probably could use 2-3 years to integrate and soften… Big gamay stuffing !!

Beautiful raspberry and strawberry, some tartness, fresh acidity, great balance but you can feel the higher alcohol level. I wonder if it'll be a little tamer with some more age

This is on the bigger side for Foillard. It got a lot better with air (less nondescript). The fruit isn't overly sweet, just a thicker more alcoholic version. Decent but pales in comparison to vintages like 2016. Let's see how it does with time, as the improvement with air was encouraging.

Given the ripeness and alcoholic heat of 2020 Fleurie, pulled this out to check if this was similar. Thankfully, it's not. Decanted. Now 2h after decant. Aromas of ripe, jolly rancher red cherries, some bubblegum, minerals, herbs, and a bit of bark and earth. Palate w cool, ripe red and black cherries, unripe blueberries, a bit of bubblegum, herbs, bark, minerals and a hint of earth. Nice acids on a med-full body. Nice finish of fruit and herbs. Excellent depth and complexity as usual. As the wine warms, there is some alcoholic heat but not nearly as much as the Fleurie. Also, the body, while certainly bigger than in nonsolar yrs, not nearly as big as the Fleurie. Still with the ripeness and alcoholic heat, not a great rendition of this. 88+

Pure red and dark fruit notes, cherries, raspberries, a hint of pepper, and pomegranate on the nose. Good acidity with tart berries, good structure, and more red cherry notes on the palate. Nice finish. The nose shows a a good amount of ripeness, but the wine is well balanced despite the 14%. Great to check in early, but this really needs 5+ years. 93+

Color is deep and dark red with purple tint. The wine has inviting fruity nose of sweet dark berries with some earthy tones. Taste is filled with dark berries that are complemented by the whiffs of red berries, black pepper and some bitter herbs. Wine is medium to full-bodied and has some supporting tannins.
I felt the wine was slightly out-of-balance for my tastes as the heat of alcohol was detectable on the initial sips and it felt like a little bit of additional acidity would have improved the wine. Nevertheless the lively fruits made the wine enjoyable experience at the moment but perhaps this wine is not for the long run.

My first taste of 2020 and it’s a fabulous rendition of Morgon’s most quintessential bottling. Taut and juicy at the same time, notes of raspberry, rhubarb, and light brett are all transparent. It’s more classic and less ripe than 2019 was. In my memory (14 onward), it bears the most similarity to 2017. Delightful freshness and luster! Drink one now.

This has much more liveliness and freshness on the nose. Still predominantly darker fruits (Underripe plum, blueberries, Bramble) but with less of the tertiary. This smells like a different wine from a different climate. SO much fresher.
On the palate, livelier acidity and freshness.
Amazing wine and back to the form in which i like it to be.

Light red, fresh and vibrant. Nose is beautiful, menthol, cherries and hints of black currant/berries. Juicy and great. Freshness bursts through on tasting, sharp, lively, crisp and juicy. Raspberries, cherries, fine tannin, lovely long lasting flavours. Really lovely - fab! As this continues it cements its place as a brilliantly constructed wine, even though very young. Perfect bright crunch, black softening fruit, menthol & kirsch. Expecting great things as this ages.

PnP and drank excellently over a period of 1.5 hours. Clean kirsch + cherry notes, raspberry, juicy red fruit, with vivacious acidity. Clean tannins, balanced, silky mouthfeel, and long. Originally, purchased 1 bottle and drank it so quickly that I had to get more. Look forward to how my case will develop. Drink now with the potential for aging.

Pours a dark ruby, this is not a light Gamay. Let it sit in the glass for 2 hours.
On the nose: a potpourri of red fruits, strawberries, sour cherries, and an intense clove note comes through. There's an earthiness that comes through on the nose too
On the palate: crunching acidity, follows the nose with the raspberries and sour cherries, with a plum note following through. Theres a subtle vegetal note, the spices come through with a really nice grip. 3-5 years left on this wine!
Dark colour, intense, beautiful soft berry fruits with violets and herbs. Not like your regular Beaujolais. Really lovely. Benefits from a little air. Will keep my other bottles for a few years more.

On the nose: Blueberry compote, berry crumble, redcurrants. Some darker berries appearing after more oxygenation. A hint of baking spices but very light. Fig & Prune.
Silky tannins, medium acidity, great length.
An unusual Beauj, as it was quite powerful and had limited acidity. It seemed quite clumsy but you could tell all the pieces were there, it just needs time to come together. Will wait a year or two try another.

Beaujolais usually reminds me of red Burgundy. This one reminds me more of a northern Rhone Syrah!
Olive tapenade, herbal, bramble, yogurt. Kind of fruit backward, though there are some blueberry, black currant and black currant notes. Some animal notes too. Med body with medium - acid and medium tannin. Drink now or age it 2-4 years.

Not a good vintage of this wine sadly. It's too dark, and the alcohol (14%) is too present. For me with this, and elsewhere in Beaujolais - the warm vintages is not doing the grape any favours.

Also deeply colored. While this is usually bigger and sappier than Lapierre's version, not this time. Serious, needs time, dark fruit, but also a lot of brett that makes me wonder what will happen with this over time.

This showed a darker fruit profile and much more obviously overtly reductive nose than the 2019 I had last week. Definitely improved after being left in the fridge overnight, showing dark red fruits, a touch of spice, floral notes, and with a fine, silky texture.
Should improve over the next couple of years.

So clean, vibrant, intense with a clear cur fruit and real substance. It's extremely young, will improve - needs a couple of years or more - still hard to resist. Drink it cooled, if not cold. 870 DKK on the list is a bit pricey for this (around 25 euro on the shelf in France). #Prins

Intensely fragrant nose of flowers and pomegranate. Focused and linear palate, bright red fruit, nerve and tension. Notes of pomegranate and cranberry, juicy, intense, good acidity. 14% alc. This will be long-lived, there’s so much material and intensity here. World class wine. And still so affordable. My god, let this sink in…..

tasting this alongside the 2000 vintage. this has all the hallmarks of a great foillard côte du py. all the front-loaded fruit of a young beaujolais with a depth that promises years of interesting development. out of the gate... i find this more promising on the palate than the 2019 was a year ago (2020 today reminds me of 2003 when it was first released) and i look forward to tracking how it develops. will definitely heavy up on this one as i suspect it will be a pleasure all along the way...

This bottle was concentrated, leaving an impression of sucrosity, but unfortunately flawed by a little mouse at the end. Paired next to a Jean Paul Brun VV 2021, which I greatly preferred.

Gamey mushroomy nose with red and blue fruit…
Strawberry, cherry hits upfront with a hefty dose of acidity and some snarky tannins… noticeable alcohol note on the end…
Probably could use 2-3 years to integrate and soften…
Big gamay stuffing !!

Markjordbær, kanskje snev av mynte. Deilig fruktig på duft og i munnen. Men også nok kropp og en fin syrestruktur. Litt enkel, men deilig.

Following on from the previous note:
This has much more liveliness and freshness on the nose. Still predominantly darker fruits (Underripe plum, blueberries, Bramble) but with less of the tertiary. This smells like a different wine from a different climate. SO much fresher.
On the palate, livelier acidity and freshness.
Amazing wine and back to the form in which i like it to be.

Dark dark red/purple coloring which surprised me initially. Gorgeous aromas of raspberry, and spices. The nose on this bottle is just so bright and vibrant.
Medium bodied palate with smooth refined tannins. This wine is fresh, juicy, and bright.

On the nose:
Blueberry compote, berry crumble, redcurrants.
