Barolo 2004 with the Jeroboam Club (Little Shop and Pantry, Bristol): Deep red-ruby, a bit of bricking. Truffle on the nose and then, oh dear, a whiff of VA. A bit of tell-tale fenugreek testifying to some unwelcome oxidation. There's still a good wine there, though, with an oddly pleasing cough syrup aspect to it. On the palate it's easy going and approachable. The tannins are evolved and barely perceptible. There's a nice sweetness on the finish. But this is surely a slightly sub-par bottle.

The most aged Barolo I have ever had, and not only was this Sandrone at 2004 but it was in a magnum. It was super fresh and incredible, as it matures better in the large format.
The nose was initially slightly muted but opened up after 2-3 hours, with a floral perfume. The elegance of this wine along with the long finish and fine tannins cannot be understated, along with the licorice and cherry notes providing a sensuous mouthfeel.
Produced from grapes that come from various vineyards; Ceretta, Vignane, Merli and Conterni. The winemakers did such a masterful job, to create the drama and the balance which is this Sandrone Barolo 2004.
Enjoyed over an afternoon of beautiful wines and even better home-cooked food, thanks to MC for spoiling us with this bottle! Divine!
And, my notes after 2 days of reflection:
The oldest Barolo I have ever had the privilege to enjoy, this 2004 was graciously provided by MC at SKT's house party, and it was my WOTD!
It had aged the 18 years in a Magnum (1.5 L) format, which likely lent itself to slowly maturing and was super well preserved and still imparted freshness with aged complexity. What a combination!
Luciano Sandrone is the son of a local carpenter, and only begun his wine journey back in 1978. His success since then is simply incredible, and I had only heard about his 100 point 2016 vintage Le Vigne Barolo about a year ago, when EC kindly sold me one of his allocation.
The growing season of 2004 was tremendous - Both long as well as easy, creating wines of depth and complexity, and most importantly ageworthiness.
Initially muted, this 2004 Le Vigne evolved in my glass after glass (Love the large format, we had plenty to go around for the 9 of us) first with cherry and sweet fruit notes, then flowers after 2-3 hours too. There were even hints of leather and rose, how divine.
The palate was a beautiful balance of black plum, other blackfruits, and such pleasant licorice too. And, the oak is so subtle and demonstrates the precise winemaking of Luciano, it simply rounds off the finish which is both sensual as well as long. Wonderful!

Aromas dominated by dark blue and black fruit, anise, wet leather, earthy floor and brush. Palate still young but exciting with great acidity and structure, and long minerally finish.
As good as last bottle

This was still rather painfully young; the cork had an impressive seal; the nose was lovely and fairly open; red berry fruits, tar, menthol, spice, and floral notes. The palate however was still very tannic; needed food desperately, but even with food the tannins closed it up early. Very good potential, but needs another decade based on this bottle.

Strawberry and tar on the nose. On the palate, black cherry, blackberry, and red berries, with notes of leather and tar on the medium to long finish, with moderate tannins and strong acidity. Good as this was, I was hoping for more. This seems younger than it is, with most of its potential still in the future; the Cellartracker drinking window looks too short. As it is, this was an average value at about $100.

Very elegant, inviting nose of blackberry, blueberry, flower petals, a touch of tar, and leather. Balanced palate with a nice grip, some fruit, and a long inviting finish. In drinking window but built for more miles. Very nice

Drank after 3 hours in the decanter. This wine was amazing. Crimson in color. It has the wonderful fullness of fruit that has survived 16 years in the bottle, but also the secondaries of tar, leather, and mineral. This is the perfect time to drink. The nose has a hint of cherries and raspberries with a bit of leather and forest floor. The palate has a range of flavors including the inevitable cherries, a bit of cranberry, some leather, and a hint of tar. The tannins were present, but not intrusive. Long finish. Fruit, acid, and tannins all balanced into a synthesis of delicious drinking.

Double decanted and gave it hours to open up. Very rich and accessible on the palate, but nose is pretty quiet right now and palate is still fully primary. Give this a few years.

Decanted an hour+ before serving. Rich , intense and powerful black and red cherry with licorice and black pepper galore. Lots of depth and richness of flavor and texture. So enchanting tonight, but this is still just a baby, and will undoubtedly be better in another decade, and possibly even better yet 20 years from now.

Lots of tannins early. However the fruit and sweetness showed around the 1.5-2hr decant mark. I think this is getting close to its peak. Would hold 1-2 more years and then drink up

Decanted for 3 hours, much better after decant. Youthful red fruited nose displays elements of cherry, tar, menthol and rosemary. Great palate, superb weight and texture with a lovely balance and moderate tannins on the long finish. This evolved immensely from initially very grapey to a complex in the zone Barolo after 3 hours.

Had this as part of a "wines bought at auction" night with my wine group at a NYC restaurant. While it was decanted, it was basically a pop 'n pour. Some faint notes of soy sauce and nail polish remover (which I always seem to find in Barolos more than 5 years old). While not my WOTN, by vote, it was our group favorite. It still has a lot of life left in it.

La Festa del Barolo Gala Dinner (The Pool in NYC): From a magnum. A bonus bottle that made it's way to our table (thanks Alex!). This is a powerful wine with quite a bit of intensity and I think to be fair needed a bit more time. The oak still stood out a touch to me although you could tell it had softened from where it started.

Pulled the cork a full day prior and poured into glasses an hour before guests were seated at a polenta party. The wine was paired with a 2004 Aldo Conterno Bussia similarly opened and poured. Both showed very well, but there was a near universal preference for the Aldo Conterno, it being the stronger of the 2 and perhaps a better match with the lamb/pork ragu with hot Italian sausages and the Valle d'Aosta Fontina cheese served with the polenta. Sandrone was the more elegant of the pairing. Ruby color, fantastic nose and totally balanced in the mouth. Lot's of life to both of these wines. Delicious.

So much here with plenty of densely concentrated red fruit and savory spice. Hinting at its greatness but still backward, despite an hour in decanter. First bottle of two cases I bought shortly after release, I might give this another decade before trying again, but certainly 92-93+ point potential.

Terrific, classically-styled Barolo, drinking well right now. Seems fully evolved with great balance. Great earth and depth. Just enough fruit to make it work, but I wouldn't wait too long to drink these up.

In a horizontal tasting of 2004 we had four great wines:
2004 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri (95 p): Nose: Truly fine and aromatic with olive oil, flower field, lavender, bell pepper jam (!), gravel and a bit of dark currants. Palate: Full-bodied and pleasantly tannic with jam-ripe luscious dark fruits.
2004 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova (93 p): Nose: A bit dry and fine with a dry-flower-y bouquet, lavender, gravel, sedar tree, white pepper, overripe cranberry and a bit of smoke and autumn earth. Palate: Semi-fullbodied, ripe, slightly dry and long with round tannins and lively acidity.
2004 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne (93 p): Nose: Fine and aromatic with jam-like fruit, cherry and a bit of leather and liquorice. Palate: Semi-fullbodied and semi-tannic with ripe and luscious dark fruit.
2004 Château Mouton Rothschild (91 p): A disappointment for a 1er cru. Nose: Fine with notes of luscious fruit, mocha and chocolate and a little bit of farm stable. Palate (did not reach the levels of the truly fine nose): mid-fullbodied, pleasantly round tannins, drier (fruit) than Ornellaia, with mature Bordeaux-style leather.

Nach dem Cannubi Boschis 1996 probiert. - Frucht stark und präsent. Kirsche, Brombeere. - Tannine noch deutlicher stärker. Damit anstrengender zu trinken. Überhaupt noch keine Alterserscheinungen. - Einfach insgesamt noch strengerer Barolo. Mehr Frucht, mehr Tannine. Kantiger.

I bought six of these on closeout, probably because of the skepticism created by the hot 2004 vintage. Tannins resolved, with a beautiful barolo nose and a full bodied complex mouth. Loved it. Lots of life ahead, but very drinkable now.

Belated birthday session for Davyd. Tasted blind. Aired in decanter for 4 hours beforehand. Poured from decanter over next 2 hours. Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, with aromas of earth, minty menthol, licorice, cassis, vanilla, blackberries, black cherries. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), grippy high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of blackberries, black cherries, sour red cherries, minty menthol, licorice, cassis. Long finish. Very good quality. A complex and layered wine. Polished and very modern. I was guessing some New World Cab dominant blend between 2001 to 2005. Shocked when it was revealed to be a Barolo. Very modern interpretation. Maybe just not enough age to reveal its true identity. I would give this another 4-5 years of age. Le Vigne is made from 4 different Barolo vineyards - Ceretta, Vignane, Merli and Conterni.

the nose shows some deep cherry and balsamic notes, full and intense, the palate is evenly layered with acidity, softened tannin, and dark flavors of licorice, blackberry, tobacco, dark plums and mushroom, complex, masculine, concentrated, yet there is an elegant side to all of this, a mouthful of nebbiolo delight

2017 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium - Kelly and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/9/2017-11/14/2017 (Villa D’este, Lake Como and Milan): Expressive nose displaying mostly ripe yet pure red fruit, sap, tar, baking spices and strong iron which is surprising. Beautifully integrated palate, nicely layered decadent red fruit, very silky and polished despite showing noticeable tannins towards to the end, bright acidity and a long decadent red fruit and iron driven finish. Perhaps the wine to seek. Drinking beautifully but definitely can improve for two more decades.

Served at a blind tasting. Again a super heavy tannin wine where it was harder to sort through the flavors (although not so bad as the one before it). At this point it's mostly oak and tannin, but there's hints of fruit poking through. Could be an interesting wine in 5-10 years.

Wine-Neun evening (at Arnoldo's): uncorked 6 hours before consuming (which is not enough for this wine) dark translucent red-brown some earthy-truffles nose with hidden dark cherries notes & spicy hints, develops in the glass over an hour, still too tannic, truffles' hints, sous-bois, roasted cherries, leather, old woody finish and lingering aftertaste

Decanted fro a good 2 hours. Needs maybe a year or 2 more in bottle. Dark in colour, rich, quite a bit of oaky dynamic, light mocha on the background. dark fruited, could use a bit more acidity. Developing nicely for sure but maybe a touch too much oak, not a lot but would have liked the wine to show better. Time will be a good friend. 92 for now

Now 12 years old, this wine was a pleasure to drink. There was amazing earth tones on the nose that went on and on. The color of the wine was clearly showing its age with some nice reddish brown edges. The fruit was medium as one would expect. Glad I have more in the cellar!

Overall: Deep ruby-red in colour, Full-bodied, strong and explosive tannin, bright acidity, great and firm structure, harmoniois balance, very long finish.
1st glass (immediately after uncorking 3pm): Surprisingly thin bodied, closed, strong tannin, fruity both on the nose and palate. Turned silky, and could find traces of oak and leather.
After drinking the first glass, I decided to conduct a little experiment, I poured two glasses of the wine into a decanter, and leave the rest bottle-breathed.
2nd glass (9pm): Poured from decanter. On the nose, cherries, plum and black fruits. On the palate, fruity too, yet can sense slight trace of mineral and meat, but the tannin softened, lack the strength of a typical Barolo.
3rd glass (9pm): Poured directly from bottle. Obviously still very tight and closed as compared with the second bottle. The tannin softened a bit, but remained very strong, still kept the taste of the 1st glass.
4th glass (9pm): Mixing 2nd glass and 3rd glass. The result was surprising. While preserving the strong tannin (characteristic of Barolos), the wine also showed its elegance and complexity.
5th glass (3pm on the next day): From the remaining bottle, in which the wine was bottle-breathed for 24 hours. The wine finally opened up, could already smell aromas of dark fruit and roses. On the palate, a bit smoky, mild spices, the tannin was still there, but being more approachable, with bright acidity. Could find minerals, berries, plum, meat, leather, oak and even vanilla.
6th glass (10pm, 31 hours after uncorking, drank till the 33rd hour):
After nearly 30 hours, the intoxicating aromas were even more obvious, rose, fruits, now even cocoa. The tannin turned softer, even more approachable, being sweet, silky and smooth on the palate. Besides the tastes of the components above, we have now milk chocolate and seasame on the very long finish. Great complexity, outstanding structure, amazing elegance.
Typical Sandrone wine, so perfect.

This is a tough one, and still needs plenty of time in the cellar to get in place!
Thight nose with some mature notes of dried fruit, barnyard, earth, wet wool, boiled pasta (something I quite often find in Barolo?!), something green, cherries and a fresh minty note.
Medium acidity, medium+ body and marked, distinct tannins. High intensity, and a very long finish.
Great stuff!

Developing nose with a medium aroma intensity. Aromas of raspberries, cherries, warm earth, violets and menthol.
Dry on the palate with a medium+ acidity, body and tannins. Medium+ flavor intensity. Flavors of cherries, oak, stable, violets and menthol. The finish is medium+ and has a bit disturbing, green feeling to it.
This is still on the young side and grumpy as hell. It has another kind of depth to it that I usually don't get in Barolos and that made me think that this maybe was some kind of Nebbiolo-blend. Maybe it has something to do with the winemaking style.
I thought it was a bit too rough to be enjoyed on its own but it should come together with a rich dish. Should be cellared further.

Deep red, only slightly fading rim, no obvious bricking. Lovely floral notes and fragrant red berries. Supple and relatively elegant, especially smooth for a Barolo. Delicious red berries with a dark tar edge. Tannins are fine and mouth coating, not excessive. Poised and stylish, showing some graceful development. Served at Christmas dinner (prime rib roast, green beans, butternut squash/artichoke risotto) after a very well-drinking Opus One of the same vintage. Just extra ordinary out of a Zalto Burgundy glass with the rich, dark tarry cherries going on. Amazing. However, so open and expressive and soft and smooth now that I think now is the time to drink them up. I can't see this aging out that much farther without disseicatting somewhat.

Drank along with the 07`, this is showing better now with similar attributes of chocolate and spicy black and blue fruit, majorly tannic, supreme structure and toasted oak not in balance yet, but suggestive of greatness to come. Still too young or requires at least 90 minutes of decanting. Initially strong note of grass with tannins unbalanced that later on faded. After 1h in the glas it gotten more round and fruits started to come out, some cherry and vanilla but still strong tannins. Thought it could take another 2-5 years before drinking at peak. Potential for 92-93 probably. Not the most typical Barolo.

Delicious.

2004 Voerzio Cerequio vs 2004 Sandrone Le Vigne:

Luciano Sandrone Le Vigne 2004:
Overall:
Deep ruby-red in colour, Full-bodied, strong and explosive tannin, bright acidity, great and firm structure, harmoniois balance, very long finish.
2nd glass (9pm):
Poured from decanter. On the nose, cherries, plum and black fruits. On the palate, fruity too, yet can sense slight trace of mineral and meat, but the tannin softened, lack the strength of a typical Barolo.
3rd glass (9pm):
Poured directly from bottle. Obviously still very tight and closed as compared with the second bottle. The tannin softened a bit, but remained very strong, still kept the taste of the 1st glass.
4th glass (9pm):
Mixing 2nd glass and 3rd glass. The result was surprising. While preserving the strong tannin (characteristic of Barolos), the wine also showed its elegance and complexity.
5th glass (3pm on the next day):
From the remaining bottle, in which the wine was bottle-breathed for 24 hours.
Typical Sandrone wine, so perfect.

lyxvin!
