Oh hello ! Lovely nose of classic slightly old school burgundy, but all that extraction and oak has melded beautifully into the dark cherry 2002 fruit, the vineyard keeps the fruit cool and stylish, nice evolution and fruit balance, really lovely and totally in the zone for pleasure now

Unlike the bottle from 6 months ago, today the 2002 Mortet Lavaux sings like the best of 2002s ever. 6 months of time or just bottle variation. Can’t wait to open the next bottle to find out.

2nd of 10, decanted an hour, perfect level, cork quarter stained, unchanged from first bottle noted in detail in December 22, youthful upside, lovely lift, even greater complexity to develop, 10+ years. VF (18.5) and with grand cru authority!

Top 1ers for AK's birthday: Dense, brooding dark fruit. Powerful, but not as elegant as the last time I had this or the ‘96 Champeaux alongside. Slightly too ripe and glossy with cherry liquor notes that was almost new-world like.

Very fruit dominant and cloying like a napa pinot. too much fruit, not enough fresh acidity and sous bois here. Prefer his 2000, by a big margin. A 2002 vintage miss, a real disappointment for me. It is showing all primary so perhaps there is upside in time.

1st of 10, opened 90 minutes, perfect cork and level - dark ruby, glossy, reasonable transparency, youthful robe; black cherry, plum, hint of spice and sous bois, rich and quite complex; fullish, long, v persistent, decent concentration, VA lift just about ok and should be absorbed with more time, GC weight and authority, attractive drive to fruit, just entering maturity but upside expected, 12+ years. VF (18.5).

Bit of a disappointment if I am to be honest. For the price and reputation, this definitely under-delivered. It is still very young and this bottle felt too early to open for most of the night. Although with time in the glass it did open up by a fair bit but never really catching the high that I expected.

A small birthday dinner: Opened side-by-side with the Laurent by a generous friend, think I liked this a lot more than him as can be seen from the previous note.
Vibrant and seductive, shimmering bright red in colour which I always think bodes well for Burgundy. Took a while to get going but had a superb purity of fruit, didn't get any signs of oak at all on this. Step behind the Laurent for complexity but it was beautifully balanced and had the magic which is hard to explain in words. This was just such an ethereal wine. Thankful to have tried an old Mortet wine, had been on my bucket list for a while.

Bought from Wine Society, cork impeccable. Opened an hour ahead of drinking, did not decant. Brick red with slight yellowing at rim. Nose of sweet dark cherry, palate ethereal, fantastic acidity. Faultless Gevrey. Still some years ahead I think but in wonderful form now. I have 5 bottles remaining and will treasure them!

Stunningly good wine, drinking at peak. Probably will hold for another 5 years and decline gracefully. Black cherries on the nose, licorice and spice on the palate, tannins integrated, oak totally absorbed. As Stephen Tanzer would say, a beauty.

This bottle in 750ml was more backward than the magnum I had. Stems, wild berries, and herbs. Vibrant with good acidity. The oak needs a few more years to integrate. Upside from cellaring.

2002 Lavaux and Champeaux By this point, it was clear that these were just too young and we should have opened them earlier. The oak, in particular, was not integrated, but by no means off-putting or done poorly. Because of their youth, these felt the most similar of any of the previous comparisons. I was surprised after tasting the 2001's, how different these came out and I wonder if simply 2001 Burgundies are drinking a lot better now than 2002.

From a magnum. Very aromatic with coffee beans, wild berries and spice. Palate was ethereal and transperent with very good stuffing. The oak was totally integrated. Really good stuff. Classic gevrey.

Had the DM Lavaux 2002 several times and it really never fails to deliver. Multi-dimensional wine with incredible depth. Fantastic nose of flower shop, ripe cherries, cedar, and wet dirt/earth. Very classic Gevrey-Chambertin. On the palate it is full-bodied and ethereal at the same time, offering up generous components of dark cherries, sweet eucalyptus, cedar, saddle leather and a hint of well-integrated oak (all wines prior to 2005 see 100% new oak). Incredible balance, juicy and long finish. One of my favorite wines from Mortet: more open and accessible than the legendary 2005, and more powerful than both the 2000 and 2003. Fabulous stuff! 96+

92-93 Fortgeschrittenes Rubinrot Sehr erdig, pilzig,Unterholz,würzig.Pfeffer,Schwarzkirschig .

From magnum. Glorious red Burgundy. Translucent red, intoxicating Burgundian nose. On the palate it displayed impeccable balance and complexity and finished with satiny elegance.

Let's Open Some Wines From 2002 (Palena - Washington, DC): Definitely got better over the course of the night. Thought that the fruit built in complexity with some nice floral elements coming to the front over time. Definitely a broad-shouldered wine, this is still an infant.

Quite dark red in color, nose brooding with lots of herbs, dark red cherries, slightly minty, licorice. Very solid and tight palate, can only feel the potential of this wine, but need at least 5 more years in order for this to really open one.

This was very promising on the nose. In fact one of the most alluring, intensely scented red burgundies I can remember. Sadly it was another matter entitrely on the palate. This came across as short, diluted and somewhat clumsy. A few around the table felt it was also alcoholic, but I didn't catch that. I enjoyed sniffing it the whole evening though, and there was no sign of anything out of place on the nose for at least 4 hrs. I wonder what was wrong with this one. NR

At 1/10 dinner tasting with many fine reds. Very refined, more pointed and elegant than the richer, more velvty St Jacques (although I still prefer Rousseau style). Strong currant nose, red raspberry mid palate feel and a mix of darker red fruits on the finish. Seems a bit young still so another year or two would help.

From magnum. Simply awesome, Sense of place on nose and palate. Best description I can think of is it is round and delicious. I kept my glass of this wine throughout the lunch and enjoyed each sip as the wine kept evolving and speaking to me “I am what wine is all about”. For me the wine of the lunch that included 11 top rated wines.

Raveneau Grand Cru with Maxime Raveneau (110 Taillevent London): A dazzling bottle more than holding its own after Rousseau Charmes 12 and Mazy 10. Very concentrated, very Gevrey with sensational core fruit and torque, a total bruiser.

Erdbeeren,getrocknete Kräuter,würzig,Waldboden,Hauch floral.
Seidig,balanciert,elegant-"altmodisch",mittlerer Körper,vielschichtig.
Längerer leicht süsslich- kräuteriger Abgang.
Klassischer leicht gealterter Gevrey der sich sehr gut präsentiert.
