  • Nose: concentrated purple and black fruit, juicy plum, vanilla, dry California brush, and a slight umami core I can’t place.

Taste: much less sweet than the nose might imply. Blueberry, vanilla, cigar box, concentrated herbs. Stiff tannins. Strong Rutherford dust. Light pyrazine (in a complementary, not overpowering way).

    Really delicious wine.

  • Quick thirty minute decant and enjoyed with grilled steaks.

Really pleasant mix of dark fruits and just a touch of earthiness. Going to age beautifully !

  • Better with 90 mins air over PnP (though that is good as well).
With air it sheds some of the "baby fat" Roy referenced in an earlier comment.
Dark fruit, plush, silky viscosity, subtle notes of milk chocolate with a creaminess that is reminiscent of Realm.
Savory and slightly sweet at the same time like kettlecorn and who doesn't like kettlecorn?
Great now, but if you only have one I'd hold off a couple of years as it will improve. If, like me, you are fortunate enough to have two, do not hesitate to open one now and give it some air. Absolutely fabulous like the British TV show of the same name.

  • 7 Hours In Napa: VHR; Roy Piper; Spottswoode; & MACDONALD (Napa, CA): 7 hours in Napa with a quick lunch with Roy Piper at Cook in St. Helena.

Roy brought the 2019 60th Anniversary Cabernet to share with my group. The wine is 1/3 Moulds Vineyard, 1/3 Houyi Vineyard, and 1/3 Greer Vineyard. There were only 3 barrels made of this wine. The wine was not prepared in advance and was a PnP at the table.

The aromas were of red, blue and black fruits with some hints of spice. The palate was of red cherry, blueberry, blackberry and hints of acai berry. There were undertones of cocoa and baking spices. The acidity was medium. There were fine grained tannins with a medium-full body. The mouthfeel was silky smooth. The wine is elegant and polished. There are no hard edges.

The wine can be drank in the short-term with a good DD or a short decant but I think it will integrate a little more in the next year or 2. If you have a couple, this is a good one to try young while waiting on your other Roy Piper's to slumber a little longer.

My score is a 94.5 with upside from short-term to mid-term cellaring.

  • 2023 Napa; 2/5/2023-2/9/2023 (Napa with a connection in Houston): Pop and pour, mix of Houyi/Greer/Mould, soft edges, mix of red and black fruit, went well with steak & frites. I think this will drink well younger and be a go to choice while waiting on the flagship. That being said, I’ll lay mine down for a few years in any event. 92 for now, upside to mid 90s for my palate in due time.

  • What a great wine. I prefer the 60th anniversary to the 19 piper. I believe the 1/3 Greer gives a bit more elegance compared to the 19. Notes of blackberry, nutmeg, milk chocolate. cinnamon with smooth tannins and a prolonged finish. Roy said it would be good to try now and he was right! If you have a few don't mind popping one now! However, I do believe with more time it will only get better!

  • Tasted with Roy at Brasswood. Gorgeous aromas with just a PNP. Dark ripe blueberry and blackberry favors with a rich dense creamy texture along with some savory qualities of sage, rosemary, and cinnamon. Quite impressive and already delicious, yet enough sweet tannins and lift to obviously improve. Only 3 barrels made sadly. Anxious to try the Greer single vineyard next year after tasting this. Bravo!
