Book Club (Foretti's): Blind: I was waffling around on this one, between a Riesling and a white Bordeaux. Ultimately landed on Roussanne after a few hints but that doesn’t count.
Well, there’s a lot going on here. The gold color hints that there might be some age. The nose had a little bit of cat piss so I was charging down the Sauvignon Blanc road. But there was a very present oily petroleum note which flipped everything upside down. This saw no new oak but there’s clearly something like that happening at the finish, plus dried moss. Excellent wine.

Bookclub (served blind)--My Turn (Foretti's in Corona Del Mar): This stuff is aging so well, and when I revealed the wine to the table from under the bag, I think everyone was surprised on how well this is doing at almost 2 decades old. Lightly oily texture with some petrol in the aroma. Plenty of acid yet what is most notable is the balance, freshness and the clear color that this is maintaining. It has a light savory note but beyond that, I just don't find much to say 'this wine is becoming old'. I last had this at the winery with Wells in 2017 just before he left Copain for good, and back then I liked the wine but to think it's been 7 years since that time, the wine seems to have budged very little. Bravo!....retasting the following day, man this is fresh and bright. There is a sour melon kind of thing in the wine that gives it character but it doesn't turn me off. In fact, I like that it's here because it lengthens the finish. Just so much freshness...!

From magnum, slow ox'ed for a couple of hours before service. An outstanding wine with lots of citrus and minerality. Goes extremely well with shellfish like crab cakes, scallops, etc.
From magnum. The wine was popped and poured, but then tasted over the course of two hours. This wine is really outstanding and interesting once it's been exposed to air for about an hour.
Upon opening, the wine had a big floral nose, but with no acidity showing at all. The flavors were dominated by minerals.
After about an hour, the wine went through a major change. Boom, the acidity was there. The floral nose just kept on giving. The flavors of minerality was still there in force, but joined by nice fruit flavors including tart citrus and apple.
Overall, an excellent wine with plenty of life, at least in this format. Give it plenty of air for maximum enjoyment.
Here's the information I received about the wine from Chris Paul, the Tasting Room Manager at Copain: "It’s 100% neutral oak aged. There’s a few hours of skin contact prior to pressing for fermentation. 2006 was a cooler year down in Paso Robles. 2009 was our final vintage with James Berry."

2006 Retrospective (Central Coast, CA): Fresh and energetic, with a neat combo of lanolin and anise notes alongside some honeyed apple and ginger. At this age, the acidity is outweighed by the fruit, making it a touch flabby. An easy drinker with lots of life left, if lacking in the complexity department.
Big waxy tropical rousanne with a bit of wet wool/lanolin/anise to it. Had it in the late afternoon but the glass we left for after dinner was the best.

Copain In The Backyard On A Summer Evening (My House In The South OC): Tasted over 2 days. The first day, this to me showed the freshness I remember from the previous bottle, with lime and anise and lightly oily texture. It then closes with some mint. The next day, similar with the fruit giving a pineapple note. At 10 years, I continue to enjoy this wine and I don't see any fade in it. I have a few bottles incoming from WineBid and I will drink them over the next 2-4 years.

I'm not usually a fan of roussanne, and I usually only have it in tasting events, but I enjoyed this bottle. I recall having this same Copain version on a couple of occasions a few years ago, and didn't, really think much of it. Tonight I really enjoyed it, and the viscous, citrus-y tanginess with was perfect on a hot Southern CA night. There was enough complexity to differentiate it from forgettable summer sippers. Maybe I should be more open to roussanne, although it won't be from James Berry since that acreage was likely long ago replanted to some Rhone varietal.

This showed terrific tonight. Chilled up, slow oxed for a few hours and then enjoyed over dinner when it warmed to room temp. Still plenty of acidity here and remains fresh and delicious. Picked up the last 3 on WineBid tonight. At nearly 10 years old, I don't see these fading, as at least tonight there is no darkening of the color, no fat textures, all good.

Copain Dinner @ The House With Wells Guthrie: Tasted next to the 2004, this 2006 listed alc was about 1/2 point higher, yet this 2006 is leaner to me. Shows a lime skin, guava, some green apple and like the 2004, lots of anise seed defining the wine and adding a zip and intensity to the finish. I prefer the 2006 at this point, and fortunately have one 750 left in the cellar and this wine will continue to age nicely for many more years. FWIW, Wells told the group that this is the best white wine he's ever made, and while I think the 2011 Laureles Grade chard may rally the Roussanne here, this is really a nice wine.

Quick TN. I like my wines with some age, and white rhone varietals are no different. This is still just a baby - still big, rich, very acidic and angular. Taking on some waxiness, but wow. The last glass, after 3 hours of being opened, the wine began to meld and come into balance. And, the little bit of remains I smelled this morning were wonderful. Will try to let my last bottle rest a few years.

Quick TN: Chilled to a little cooler than cellar temperature. This wine is starting to pick up some nice secondary characteristics. More minerally with some lanolin noticeable with the white stone fruit (apricot, peach) as the main attraction. Drinking well now but in no hurry if you like white rhones with age. Great pairing with veal sweetbreads.

Enjoyed this wine so much at the Montage a few years ago that I begged Wells for some on the spot. Brought a bottle tonight to Robert T's. I knew better to bring him a US red so I thought this would do the trick and it did. More mineral than anything else. It has sadly lost some of the punch I remember from a few years back. Served with seared scallops over fresh corn topped with peaches/thyme sauteed in butter. I really thought the apricot/peach notes on this roussanne would shine through and I was right (for once). This wine has lost some (not all) of its crisp mineral and has put on a little weight as it feels a bit more oily. However, it provided a refreshing point/counterpoint to the dish that needed no explanation on my part.

One of the most complete and delicious white wines I've had in years. Impresses with nose of beeswax and honey'd flowers, followed by bright lemon/limey acidity and citrus rind, more starfruit and grapefruit, custard. Finish is bright, almost electric ginger flower and root plus sweet strawberry and thompson grape. The focus and variety remind me of the best of Burgundy, but with a completely different profile. Honestly hard to rate with so little comparable among domestic or Rhone roussanne.

I didn't love the last bottle but this one is much better. This has a very similar flavor profile, however, it lacked the bitter and tart grapefruit component. Golden hay in color. Pollen, honey, white flower and lime zest. Touch of acid and nice minerality. Nice unctuous mouthfeel.

Medium straw core with a subdued nose of melon, honey and white peach. After this warmed up in the glass, a medium bodied wine was revealed with little angularity left to stand in the way of an average, but clean finish. This isn't closed down right now, which suggests it's probably right around the corner. Approx $27, needs some more bottle time. Drink thru 2012.

lemon zest that fades to a lime & citrus rind mixed w/ mellow green apples w/ a hint of waxy-minerality.... pretty nice actually- don't let my citrus zest comment lead you to think it's sharp and crisp- there's a nice balance due to that waxy/mineral/chalk element

A deceptively big wine that I feel needs time to settle down in the bottle. Initially reticent, aromas began to open after several hours and complexity began to show best on second day. QPR hard to talk about when California Roussanne is such a small field to draw from. It's only worth it if it's what you like. I like it and am willing to wait for it's best.

Third go around with this wine, and has gone from blah, to hey not too bad, to you know I really like this! In part, I feel this third and best showing was the result of serving this Copain just a tint below room temp, which was initially done against my will, but the result was soon obvious. Mineral, citrus skin, med / low acidity, and a slightly waxy texture are here to play. Still, for $35, I’ll pass next time.

While not as layered and well-knit as the 05 Roussanne at this stage, this has nice vanilla beeswax floating around a core of apples, almonds, and light citrus. Not the best value in the Copain lineup this year but not a shabby wine by any stretch.

Light and pleasant notes of mineral infused flowers on the nose, mild citrus and mineral flavors on a slightly waxy palate. Acidity is late in arriving, but provides just enough structure to keep things moving along. A nice wine and I’m a huge fan of Copain Syrah’s, but at $30, this wine simply lacked the concentration or personality to warrant the asking price.

Not as good as previous versions of Copain's whites but still tasty.

Delicious Roussanne that I continue think need much more time in the bottle, but has all the texture and nuance to be a great aged Roussanne--hope I have discipline to wait a few years!

lemon zest that fades to a lime & citrus rind mixed w/ mellow green apples w/ a hint of waxy-minerality.... pretty nice actually- don't let my citrus zest comment lead you to think it's sharp and crisp- there's a nice balance due to that waxy/mineral/chalk element

Outstanding roussanne that makes my grade with strong body and many subtle nuances of flavor.

Shane Finley Comes to the OC (Casa Murray - San Juan Capistrano, CA): A harmonious melange of beeswax, white flowers, honeydew melon, and buttercream. Round on the palate, yet also quite light on its feet. Nice! 89-90 points.

Disappointing. Wet stone, minerals, a little honey. Lacks intensity and thrust. Closed down? I will wait a couple of years on my last bottle.

Crisp with good minerality. White fruit, long finish.

Fresh honey, melon and white fruit over flowered stones. Palate perception flashes between crisp and waxy. However, the acidity was there to deal well with food.

Clear, pale gold. Wet stone, minerals and honey on the nose. Honey and green apples on the palate. Clean, and crisp. Very long finish that just bumped my score up 2 points. 45 seconds and counting...

Served in a Reidel Syrah stem, and the larger glass seemed to add some depth and character than from my previous note. Good lime and citrus flavors, refreshing minerality, and nice slightly waxy texture.

Waxy, nutty, minerals and citrus. Lots of lime on the finish. Very subdued. I would like to see a little more intensity.

Waxy oily mouth feel. Tastes of wood though I'm not sure if it's vinified in oak or not. Also some tropical fruits. Pretty good balance and one of the better CA Roussanne's that I've had.

Waxy and honeyed feel, with a lemon custard element. Tasting the wine a day later, a bit more diesely in tone, followed by some slate.
