Dark ruby purple with lightening around the edges. Classic aromas of dried prunes, black cherry, baking spice, leather and cedar. A very silky and restrained palate shows ripe, semisweet black/purple fruit leather, medium acidity, resolved tannins and a long mineral and spicy finish.

Pale, bricking, garnet colour. Aromatic, dried berry, fig, leather, caramel, and cocoa nose with a mineral note. Medium-sweet, warming palate with alive acidity and evolved sweet, dried fruit flavours; hints at more earthy mineral on the finish.
Sampled from 375mL bottle.

An elegant, well-balanced port that is drinking well. Probably has years of evolution ahead of it so there is no need to rush. I would not be surprised to see this wine meriting a score in the upper 90's several years from now.

Decanted for 5 hours to ensure it opened. Nice leather, tobacco, chocolate, and dark blackberries. Beautiful finish.
I did think the finish could have been longer and it did come across a bit hot on the alcohol. This will last 20-30 more years but very nice now with a good decant

From half bottle. Very fragile cork so I recommend using a Durand or Ah-so type opener. Double decanted for sediment - I think a quarter of the bottle was sediment. Despite its age, there is an abundance of (very ripe/cooked) fruit and baking spices. Amazing breadth on the palate with a finish that goes on and on. There is still some tannin creeping on the finish but the fruit more than carries through. There is definitely some alcoholic heat so I think I will serve my remaining bottles on the cooler side (12-14°C). An amazing pairing with dark chocolate.

Walkabout tasting, no detailed tasting notes. Taylor had a great display with plenty of explanation material and tasting opportunity. Youthful as expected, the 2016 Vintage showed lots of red fruit, spices. Quite different than the 2016 next to it, not only because of the additional 20 years of bottle age. The 1997 was higher pitched with red fruit and cinnamon. Overall the Tawny Ports were more exciting to taste today due to their additional complexity. May be Vintage port really needs 50, not 30 years to be truly exciting. 94-95

A youthful Port that is just beginning to be accessible. It is much improved over the previous bottle 3 years ago, as the wall of tannin has started to recede. 1997 is a relatively leaner vintage, which I now prefer to the solar vintages. That being said, there is still a ton of fruit, viscosity, and depth, plus the structure one associates with Taylor’s. Drink and hold. 91++

Made with fruit sourced from the two Taylor estates, Quinta de Vargellas (contributing perfume and structure) and Quinta de Terra Feita (contributing body, fruit and depth). This was the last vintage that was blended without any fruit from Quinta do Junco. Bottled in 1999, after 2 years of aging in traditional 535-liter oak pipes. 20,5% alcohol, 90 g/l residual sugar and 4,4 g/l acidity.
Dark, luminous and still relatively youthful ruby red color with a pale ruddy rim. Rich, sweetish nose with aromas of blueberry jam, some fresh blackcurrant tones, a little bit of boozy aguardente, light sappy notes of stemmy greenness, a heady hint of perfumed flowers and a touch of ripe bilberry. The wine is dense, youthful and chewy on the palate with a full body and intense flavors of ripe bilberries, some blackcurrant jam, light plummy tones, a little bit of kirsch, light stony mineral tones, a perfumed hint of violets and a herbal touch of sappy greenness. The overall feel is very balanced, but also surprisingly soft and gentle for such a young Vintage Port, the moderately high acidity being very balanced with the body, but the tannins coming across as very mellow and silky in texture, retaining surprisingly little grip. The finish is sweet, moderately warm and very juicy with a lengthy aftertaste of ripe bilberries, some sweet, pruney dark fruit, light piquant notes of peppery spice, a little bit of kirsch, a hint of stony minerality and a touch of blackcurrant jam.
A very sophisticated, balanced and harmonious Vintage Port that is both remarkably youthful for its age, but also surprisingly gentle and silky for a Taylor's Vintage Port - after all, this shipper is best known for wines that are often described as "austere", "structured" or "masculine". Instead of coming across as particularly austere or muscular, this wine was very juicy, supple and silky in texture with vibrant fruit flavors and very balanced overall feel. Structurally the wine is perfectly ready for drinking and doesn't really call for any additional aging, but if one likes their VPs to have taken their first steps toward a more Tawny Port terrotory, i.e. to show some tertiary complexity, this wine doesn't have any of that. No, instead the fruit department here is so vibrant and youthful it's hard to believe this wine would be any older than 10 years old. Smashing stuff with still lots of mileage left in the tank. Expect the score to inch higher as the wine puts more age under its belt. Highly recommended.
From 375mL. Cork broke with waiter's opener, required rescue with a Durand. Significant sediment caked on the sides of the bottle. Deep ruby with minimal bricking; aromatic, raisins and spices, anise; palate is full bodied, high alcohol (20.5%) but balanced, medium fresh acidity throughout, plummy fruit, fairly primary still, lovely persistence through the midpalate; finish is medium-plus length. Excellent now, but this will have significant growth over the next decade and longer. 92+

Plum and camphor on the nose. On the palate, plum, blackberry, and raisin, with notes of fig and anise on the medium to long finish, with moderate tannins and good acidity. This was a very good value at a little over $60.

Virtual Riesling Tasting (Home): Very dark red/purple color. Wines were opened and poured into vessels between 4-4:30pm, poured into glasses around 6:30pm; drank a glass over 3 hours. This was excellent. Great nose, abundantly damp and earthy, sweet creme de cassis, blackberry, plum and raisin, fine graphite, smoke, wood, spices and something even more exotic. The palate is full and lifted, very fresh, black fruits, raisin, graphite, with lots of black pepper and spice box. This was long and well integrated, and the alcohol is very well concealed. This is a beauty and drinking well - even better the next nght. 93-93+.

All wines prepared as follows: Opened between 4:00 and 4:30, poured into jars for transport, poured into glasses and tasted starting at 6:30. The following wines were tasted:
1997 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port: This was a bonus wine Dan threw in for dessert (Thanks Dan!). This is still primary, and even though it sat in a jar for a couple hours, initially it still had quite a bit of heat. Fortunately, more than enough fruit to compensate, but when I drank some the next day, it was drinking even better. I would recommend a minimum 10-12 hour decant, if possible; or waiting another 10 years to open one of these.
If you have neither the time nor the inclination to do either, it is very drinkable and enjoyable now. As stated, there is plenty of fruit to combat the alcohol. The nose is awesome, with violets and sweet plum blossoms, with hints of tar and chocolate. The wine offers an excellent mouthfeel, with round tannins and enough acidity to show off the fruit, which is dominated by stewed plums, black current and a hint of blackberry. Some cedar, asian spice, tobacco and chocolate also show themselves. The finish initially showed a fair amount of heat (alcohol), but the intensity faded with time, and the next day, was not really discernible. Initially, I would have scored this 92, but after tasting the next day, I felt a 94 was more representative. Recommend holding, but drinking any time soon will not disappoint, especially with a long decant.

This bottle was filtered and drank at home. It was burgundy in colour with a slight orange tinge and had a very thin "oily" layer on top. This had a nose of prunes, blueberries and dark cherries. In the glass were flavours of dark berries, apricots and a hint of oranges. This port was overly spicy for my liking with a lingering burn finish. This bottle wasn't bad but it wasn't anything special either.

Sweet black fruits with a strong peppery alcohol element and dried mint. Dark black fruit, dates, fruitcake, black licorice, thick glycerin. Long finish with dry purple fruit, tons of black pepper, sweet fruit, molasses, and dry herbs.

Interesting that this is completely different from the last bottle which showed such a stern profile. This bottle, on the other hand is wide open, jammy and almost ‘port-light’. The nose is loaded with kirsch and raisin with a licorice backbone. The palate has good viscosity but seems simple and one-dimensional. Nothing wrong just nothing special. Good. (90)

Riesling and ripe Bordeaux (Restaurant Brunnenstube, Beinstein): Short decant, maybe drunk too warm. Clear, deep ruby, almost purple color. Nose was rather disappointingly flat and one-dimensional. On the palate very complex, deep and bold. Wonderful, luscious red fruit, good acidity, high, silky tannin, some eucalyptus on the long and partially hot finish. Hard to rate. I would say it needs more time to lose its puppy fat. 91-92+

from 375 the finest showing to date as this is starting to come into it's own. Dark cherries still dominate the fruit flavors but we are tasting a lot more secondary flavors such as tea, spice and coco. Overall while this won't rival vintages such as the 77 it is showing better than I thought at it's youth.

Far more integrated and interesting the second night. Mix of blackberry and strawberry jam with whisky cherries and a hint of caramel. Silky and well rounded, especially the second night when the tannins became more integrated. Lacked uniqueness but solid overall.

Tannins are obvious and not fully integrated, will improve with more years under the cork. Delicious though! Dried figs, yummy blue fruits, caramel, light spices. A crowd winner, and again, will improve with a few more years.

Very good, but not great. Minimal decant. This needs air and time. A bit tight and the alcohol on this was too readily apparent. Other than that, this has some elegance for sure.

Tasted from .375 bottle. This one is in a great place! Silky smooth tannins and not too heavy on the mouthfeel. Blue and black fruit. Black Cherie’s and licorice. Even a little Asian spice. Not too sweet and sitting in a great place between old and new fruit. Impeccable balance and superb structure.
Delicious flavors with red and dark cherry, dried fig and with secondary flavor notes of toffee, caramel. Has entered its drinking window, but still not completely integrated, with tannins that are not yet perfectly velvety and a touch of heat. Will be interesting to see how this evolves over the next 5-10 years, but enjoyable now. Perhaps a very good but not magnificent Taylor VP.

Big port with dense chocolate-covered cherries and hints of baking spices, game, and tobacco. This is a rather generic port tasting note, but I don't know how to do better. With port, more than with any other wine, the rating says more than the tasting note. I would say this port will improve with at least a decade more aging, as the fruit expands and brightens.

Very pleasant. Great nose with blue fruits, copious booze and some darker earthier notes wrapping a backdrop of violet. Tannins are in good shape and the mouthfeel is nice and oily as it coats the mouth and throat going down. Some spice, cedar, cigar box and nutmeg hints on the med + finish. Overall about where you'd expect it to be given its age box.

Pretty notes of blackberry, cassis, elderberries, some sweet spices, tobacco and also some greenish/bellpepper notes. Full-bodied, with medium sweetness, medium acidity and medium+ tannin. Good length. I would still give this another 5+ years in bottle but it's a beautiful Vintage Port from this great producer. Went well with the blue Stilton.

Tannins still very closed. Great ripe fruit. Dark berries and dusty chocolate. Pencil lead like a young Lafite Rothschild. Menthol and high alcohol on the finish. Thought it would be ready, but needs another few years for the tannins to soften further.

Strong nose of licorice, lavender and fruit - very savory. This continues on the palate. It needed an hour to pull together - this youthful wine is meaty and savory with an herbed tinged flavor profile. That said, it is clearly port, just a tough guy versus a velvet maiden. Young. (92+)

From 375. 30 minutes air. Deep color, very little bricking; fabulous nose with spice, raisined plum fruit, no heat; palate is full bodied, right amount of sweetness, slight heat, lots of plum and black fruit; finish is long. A wonderful wine on a cold day, very young and needs another 5-10 years even from small format. 93+ Update: 2 hrs air: Still very youthful, tannins are well integrated, very fruit forward. Just a tad too much EtOH on palate, but very forgivable. An enjoyable after-dinner drink.

From a 375ml and drank over three nights. Absolutely lovely scents of raisins, chocolate, cloves, and black cherries. Like some kind of Christmas cake your grandma would make. Very sweet rendition but still fresh and never cloying in the mouth. Don't see much upside potential, especially from a split, but it's a real treat right now.

This has always been a very forward and easy to drink wine. I have had it on numerous occasions and it never disappoints. Nose rich with sweet fruits, plums come to mind. Sweet smooth flavor. The tannins have mostly melted away. Still with lots of fruit and a nice finish that lasts for a couple of minutes. I know this sweet/softer style of fladgate had some critics concerned about its future, my opinion is that it has turned out well. I have converted many new port drinkers with this wine. Today was no exception. Drinking exceptionally well right now. Highly recommended especially at current reasonable price levels. Drink up and enjoy!

Half-bottle. The wine was medium- to dark garnet in colour. It offered aromas of dried flowers, dried cherry, fig, plum, dates, raisins, chocolate and black tea on the nose. Immediately after opening the bottle the wine showed raisins, dark cherry, sweet plum, hazelnut and some heat from the alcohol on the palate. After five hours in the decanter the alcohol was better integrated and the wine now offered intense dark cherry and chocolate flavours, dark fruits, sweet plum, raisins, some black currant, baked apple, hazelnut, spices, clove, a hint of marzipan and black tea, paired with ripe tannins and phenomenal length. A nice, medium-sweet Vintage Port that was surprisingly enjoyable pop & pour, gained complexity with air and should reward further cellaring. If sampled now - and this Port indeed is quite palatable already - I would recommend decanting for at least six hours. Compared to the Taylor's Vintage Port 2000 I had recently the 1997 is sweeter, more forward and more accessible, whereas the 2000 is the tighter, more structured and more elegant wine of the two. 91+

A good but perhaps not great Taylor VP. Deep ruby with a black core. Nose is dominated by cassis. mineral dust, bitter orange, waxy aromas. In the mouth, intense fruit (cherry syrup) but a bit bitter with a distinctive flavor of brioche on the forepalate. Should be pretty good at maturity in a decade or so, but does need the time and I doubt that this will ever approach the very best Taylor vintages.

93++. Excelente.

A wonderful wine on a cold day, very young and needs another 5-10 years even from small format. 93+

In the mouth, intense fruit (cherry syrup) but a bit bitter with a distinctive flavor of brioche on the forepalate. Should be pretty good at maturity in a decade or so, but does need the time and I doubt that this will ever approach the very best Taylor vintages.
