I ought to be drinking more of this. Stupendous showing. On the first whiff, thought this a classic Cheval Blanc, but in the mouth it’s impossibly fine and ethereal. Loads of intense strawberries, roses and hawthorns, laced with just the right amount of signature greens and level of ripeness. If you love your Burgs and Bordeaux, this is two loves in one!

C & YM Birthday Dinner (Empire Chinese Cuisine): Blind. Forest floor, earth, capsicum interlaced with red fruits, med acidity, dry sandy tannins. Later in the night, cassis, grass, asparagus but drinking beautifully now. Fruits gain weight as it oxidise with herbal notes adding to the complexity as oppose to the earlier pour.

Birthday celebration for C/Y: Could only be Rougeard - had such an elegant and silky texture that only the top producers have. Tannins were very fine with no rough edges, clearly from a cooler vintage without any blowsiness. A little greenness emerged with air but overall the vibrant, pure red fruit still dominated. Absolutely everything in place for this wine and my favourite of the night.

Stood out or should we say jumped out from the list at Saddle, Madrid. Impressive as always after a bit of decanting and dare we say this is still young and with a cool climate feel. Yes it has secondary feel, soft earthy and with a herby edge but is also firm and definitely has the stuffing to go a decade or more in evolution and beauty. As always these wines are an experience and we loved it once again. 95 and maybe they only thing we would fault it was lacking a bit of that finer elegance that super top wines have.

Flickinger dinner at avec River North (Chicago, IL): Honestly, this isn't too pyraziney. It's surprisingly ripe for a 2004 Loire in that there's so much fruit and that fruit has a slight sweetness to it. Texturally mature, and in peak secondary phase right now. I've generally been pretty down on cabernet franc these last few years, but this bottle nailed it. The only question about this wine of course, is the cost.

An embarrassment of steak riches (Chez G): a famed and fabled producer I’d never tasted before. Based on this showing - excellent stuff, there’s a depth there, a savouriness, and great balance. Swirled around the mouth one feels the structure but there’s also fruit there. These wines do make me think I should explore chinon more, and I am led to believe this is a region one can learn about without breaking the bank.

Almost ten years since I last had this. It has lost the initial fruit and some of the energy that I remember, but it hasnt quite gone full tertiary. This seems younger than I was expecting, still in middle age with noticeable tannin. Don't get me wrong it's a great wine - classic cab franc aromas, great depth and texture - but not quite living up to that special bottle in my memory. Will give my final bottle a few more years.

Red fruit, dark cherries, tobacco, and a bit of dried fruit on the nose. Good structure and tannins with nice acidity on the palate, along flavors of red fruit, cherries, and tart berries. Long finish. Excellent wine that I’m sure will continue to improve a bit with time, but it’s drinking so well right now. Tannins are strong, but well integrated.

The 2004 was similar to me in its age profile as the 04 Allemand Reynard, where you saw this wine felt complete and drinking as good as it gets - elegant aged soft red fruit, cool acidity and fully integrated tannin profile and a small dose of tietiary notes in leather and spiced earth.

This was served blind during a Krug Clos du Mesnil vertical as an intermezzo wine. Another amazing wine. Expressive nose of farmyard with dark fruit and a green, CabFranc like stemmy nose in the background, wonderful. The palate is so elegant, not rustic but just laser precise, tannins dissolved. Another stunning Clos Rougeard, what can I say. 96-97

End of night so didn't go deep, but like other 2004s this is on the high acidity side of spectrum with an inherent lightness to it. Bit of volatile acidity again on nose. Pretty but not compelling.

Winorama: A winter in Wineland III; 1/4/2019-1/13/2019 (Portland/Willamette, Eureka, Napa): This wine is just straight up special. It's a shame they've gotten so expensive. Really one of the better made and more interesting wines. Very early in its life. There's a certain restraint to it that I appreciate. A lightness. Complex and interesting. A wine that paired well across most all of the food we had. Love these.

I've only had CR three times, but this was the cleanest, least bretty of the three. Still a hint, but so well integrated as to seem part of the schtick. Plums, leather, spices. Others have noticed the classic bell pepper/pyrazine notes, but those were largely absent for me. Smooth tannins. Medium-long finish. Could easily be mistaken for an earthily elegant Burg.

Great stuff. Makes a great impression right away, combining fresh black cherries, savoury earthy and mineral notes and more high toned green herbal elements into a lovely scent and there's a sense of remarkable finesse and grace on the palate with the tannins fine grained and bright acids keeping it very elegant and fresh. Rougeard never disappoints.

Loire Cabernet Franc tasting (flat of a friend, in Budapest): Medium garnet red. Lots of oak at first sniff, but not the sweet-vanilla action, and it tones down after a longer air contact. Nose is intense, still very young, with cranberry, cherry, black cherry, smoke and some mushrooms. Not obviously Cabernet Franc, and definitely not the Bordeaux school. Palate reinforces what the nose suggests: it's a Burgundy in it's heart! Not extracted, has almost no weight, but still has impact. So integrated that you almost cannot perceive acid, tannin or alcohol, yet everything is there. So seamless. Not an in your face fruitbomb, but makes you thinking. A wine of subtlety and refinement. It's a Burgundy made from Cabernet Franc grapes. Would put many expensive Burgundies in the shade. I wish I could follow a whole bottle developing through days, my rating would most likely go higher. 92-93 points

Off the list at Vinegar House Hill in Brooklyn. It needed quite some time to open up as it was really simple and monolithic for about an hour. Then what you expect from Clos Rougeard started to emerge: silky texture, wonderful fruit but more important that refreahin minerality. Nice violets notes as well along a hint of green as well. Overall a nice and enjoyable Poyeux. Light on its feet, probably for the mid term.

First impression was that this wine is quite "harsh". Not the voluptuous style as I remembered it. After being decanted for about an hour the wine opened up and revealed nice floral notes. The first impression remained, but this is a stilish quality-wine nevertheless.

Less harsh impression than the first bottle. It still needs time, but pairing it with the right food does the trick!

First impression was that this wine is quite "harsh". Not the voluptuous style as I remembered it. After being decanted for about an hour the wine opened up and revealed nice floral notes. The first impression remained, but this is a stilish quality-wine nevertheless.
