Tasted blind over dinner. Medium garnet. Rustic and ripe nose here with sour cherry, red berries and sweet spices, some dried fruit. On the palate lots of structure, lots of tannins but they are well supported by the fruit. I think Fourrier has managed this well for 2003, done what is possible but of course the airiness and elegance of this Cru is not on display in a Canicule vintage.

You've got the darker, richer fruit of the vintage but it shows a transparency and purity that reminds me of 2002. Plush texture shows a bit of weight but there's sufficient density to the dark-fruited flavors to maintain balance. The 2003 Clos St Jacques is very good.

1/3, excellent cork. Quite deep ruby/garnet core, medium garnet rim. Nose is a touch mute and although it does open up a bit it lacks the aromatic fireworks usually associated with Fourrier, showing dark fruit, attractive spicy notes - hint of furniture polish. Medium bodied on the palate with sophisticated, cool, dark (plum, black cherry) fruit, again an attractive spicy overlay, soil, extremely fine, now soft tannins, fresh acidity and a touch of savoury meat on the long finish. Generally not a fan on this vintage, I approached this with some trepidation, but is it lovely, beautifully fruited with exquisite balance - it exudes class. Drinking now but no need to hurry.

Our final flight of the night had 4 wines, and this was 1st up. Very dark-purplish colour, with a somewhat funky, musky barnyardy nose. Some blackberry notes seemed to be coming through as well. This was quite dense & concentrated on the palate - lots of black-fruits balanced with nice freshness/acidity. After some 2-hrs, the nose had transformed - sweet cherries, violets, so much more attractive! Overall, a very nice wine!

Burg Dinner with Friends (Formento's - Chicago IL): I haven't had this wine in almost 6 years, and truly like it more now than before. Dark and extremely concentration, but showing fresh, vibrant and elegant black fruit. Great length, very good textures, wonderfully balanced. If served blind, I'd have thought from 2002. This will drink well for well over another decade. Kudos for the vintage.

Small tasting glass @ VINEUM during service, so a brief note. Very special for me because it is my first time tasting a Fourrier wine. Rich and exotic with a lot of appeal. If the 2003 is this good, how about the top vintages?!

Leiden in Rotterdam at Vineum: Fourrier, one of my favorite producers. Was interested what he had accomplished in the difficult 2003 year. He hardly ever dissapoints and again did not with this wine. Dark fruit, concentration, fresh with good acidity, great minerality. Just a bit of tartness. What a treat. Very fine.

A deep colour, medium red; a very perfumed nose, with ripe fruit and some vegetal overtones; rich, somewhat sweet and slightly cooked redcurrant/red cherry fruit on the palate. Quite intense, and long on the finish. More power than elegance, but certainly fine.

The nose is very less but there's a great hint of Henri Jayer's style. Powder talc-like and so elegant, no terroir CSJ smell but very beautiful scent of wine.
The body is full, sweet but not overripe, very very delicious with the very good aftertaste. Long and lovely finish. Impressive !!!

Attractive, sweet, raspberry and redcurrant fruit; medium depth - in fact, perhaps a touch light in mid-palate, although the finish is quite long. This is very attractive to drink, if not typical Burgundy. Good pinot flavour, but not much terroir definition.

HDH auction tasting at Tru; 6/27/2014-6/28/2014 (Chicago, IL): Even Fourrier is not immune to the awfulness of this vintage. The nose is just bizarre with a bunch of chemical odours that I can't identify. The palate doesn't hold much -- it's hot with alcohol though there's a valiant attempt to give this some balance in that this avoids becoming jammy and overripe. Pretty awful.

Fairly deep colour; quite a pungent nose of fresh, red fruit and some secondary, slightly vegetal notes; the palate is initially full, rich and sweet, with ripe strawberry and redcurrant fruit. There is a slight lack of concentration towards the end, and it is perhaps short of acidity, even a bit flabby, but otherwise it is most enjoyable.

One for Sanjay. Do not open this wine again until 2033. Incredibly primary, pure sweet grape juice. Aromas of black cherries, violets, spice, and touch vinous. Critics of 03 will say Rhone, accurate for where it is now but with my limited experience I would suggest that in 50 years this will be a star. It is pinot but not as we know it.

Another great showign and we are big believers that this climat is worthy of Grand Cru status. The hot 03 vintage is starting to show a lot here and the sweet core of ripe red fruit is unbalancing the wine. Beautiful nose none the less and a show of elegance and quality. Drink now. 92-93

Nice subtle flavors, really surprising for a 2003 from Gevrey. Red cherry, nicely ripe and balanced. Showing a bit of the classic Gevrey density and power on the finish, but not what I'd expect from a CSJ. I have a bunch in the cellar and won't revisit for another 3-5 years to see if the flavors start evolving from very good Pinot Noir to very good Gevrey.

Brought by Mike Z. Coffee and Cocoa on the nose, a little fruit zest I get in immature burgs, some berry and stemmy fruit, tar. Plush and chewy on the palate, a touch soft, lots of berries. Dusty cocoa. Decent acid. exceptional for a 03 burg, hard to tell it is from a brutally hot vintage. Nose:5 /6, Palate: 5/6, Finish: 5/6, Je ne sais quoi (wild card): 1/2 = 16/20 = 92/100

After 6 hours of slow breathing this noble Premier is medium-plus intense ruby coloured at the rim, without any visible bricking or clearing. Aromatically, this wine has some genuine depth to it. Medium-plus intense black fruits are laced with blossomy notes and a touch of game and after 30 minutes in the glass, added richness surfaces in the form of cinnamon-laced juniper berry and cloves notes. Out of all red wines tasted, this wine stood out because of its precision. It’s “only” medium-plus bodied and the medium-plus tannins have lost none of the grip previous bottles displayed. Thankfully, the reductive notes which marred them are absent here. Medium-plus acidity has to be sought out for determination purposes, as the mid-palate is jam-packed with intense damson and blackberry fruit without actually being jammy. The perceived sweetness comes across as honey comb rather than sugary, so if I were to pick nits it would be that the mineral expression is somewhat absent here. Given that the finish does a balanced 20-25 seconds, I’ll give 92 points with a point headroom by 2015. However, the tasting sample poured after popping the cork was tight and displayed much more burly tannins, so if one were to try this now my advice would be to use extended aeration. ...TN Mike de Lange.

I would have never guessed this wine to be an '03. It was fresh, clean and had no over-ripeness. It took about an hour to hit its stide but once it opened it was of Grand Cru weight and comlexity. The fruit was ripe but also complimented by a fresh acidity and an intriguing minerality that carried the wine into a long, velevety finish. This wine is a baby but showing very well now.
