Certainly deep and dense, but I couldn’t get an obvious read on the direction on which this is headed. Muscular red cherry, musk, but lots of oak. Certainly impactful, but when will the oak integrate and how else will everything sit by the time that happens?

Anne Gros' 1999 Richebourg, still a dark ruby in color, is youthful and dense, with an attractive nose of dark cherry, raspberry, dried violet, orange peel, ginger, and sandalwood. Impressively concentrated, showing even more on the palate than the nose, with intense flavors of dark cherry, raspberry, and soil. Powerful yet fresh and bright. This is excellent and well-stored bottles have many years to go.

Drunk at Castellana Hong Kong - Richebourg tasting - An attractive floral nose, a touch of boiled sweets on the palate (which I recall from other vintages of this wine). The finish is short and thin however. Unfortunately outshone in this company.

TNs: Female Burgundy Winemakers Dinner (Yan, National Gallery, Singapore): Superb - this was quite unanimously voted the wine of the night amidst a strong line-up. It had beautifully rich nose to start, with layers of black cherry, plums and cherry liquor, a drift of violets, and then lovely, deep draws of earthy sous bois and stony mineral. A really multifaceted bouquet, but somehow while rich, deep and compelling, it was never showy - just quietly drawing you in. The palate then just carried on where the nose left off. It was still a tight I thought, but boy was it lovely - powerful, full, deep, with dark cherries and plums, mineral and spice, all playing against a savoury, earthy, meaty backdrop. Great long finish too, with velvety tannins nicely integrated with an almost profound depth of fruit and mineral, earth and spice. A full, complex, and very complete wine. Superb stuff, which will only get better over the next 6-8 years and beyond.

Incredibly deep and youthful. It smells of sandalwood, black cherries, freshly grated ginger and dried flowers. It is dense and penetrating, with great power and precision. Length is imposing. Needs another two decades.

The dinner with Jeannie Cho Lee (Taberna del Alabardero, Washington D.C.): Strong stem and slightly green note to start. Medium expressive very youthful nose displaying blackberry, ash, stem, a hint of green, dry flowers and strong earth. Excellent concentration, stem and black fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity, still noticeable tannins and a medium to long black fruit driven finish. Although it displays impressive concentration, it lacks the finesse and seems slightly disjointed. I am not sure whether this will come together with another decade or two of cellaring.

I didn't keep detailed tasting notes but this was a strong showing. After and 2 hour decant it was ready for business. Nice complexity with spice, earth and medium dark berry flavors. Drank against the 1999 DRC Richebourg which was the deeper richer wine.

Richebourge has always been a difficult wine for me to access and this bottle was no different. More airing was needed (drank almost straight from bottle). Nose was reticent but. Flavors were rounded with red fruits dominated the palate which developed into dark heavier fruit. Good Vosne spice indicative of the pedigree but needs time.

Vosne-Romanee Grand Crus for Michael and Peter's Birthdays (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): Absolutely beautiful – this was the best amongst the quartet of Richebourgs by some distance, and one of the table’s favourite wines overall. The nose was full-on 1999, full of rich, thick, ripe aromas, with dark plums and black cherries and dried flowers on a more savoury bed of earth and meat and stony mineral, all wreathed with a fragrant waft of powdered spices. Lovely stuff. The palate was very satisfying indeed, if still a bit monolithic. It was powerful, dark and deep, showing layers of muscular dark fruit edged with a little mint and spice and dried flowers. This was just superb – complete, balanced, pure, yet with a lovely deliciousness. All wonderfully integrated and effortless graceful too, riding on a stream of juicy acidity that was woven deep into the fabric of the wine and held firm by wonderfully fine tannins, so that the the wine seemed to float along in a soft, velvety, almost creamy texture in spite of its firm, well-structured spine. Great stuff, all leading into a full, long, powerful finish where were little complexities just starting to show, with earth and spice and meat peeking out from amidst the sweet fruit. A beautiful wine, already wonderfully integrated, with real depth and power wed to class and stylish verve. For all that though, it was clearly still in its nascent stage on the night and needs tons of time in the bottle yet to really strut its stuff. I am not usually a fan of Anne Gros' style, but this was breathtaking. I would give it another 10-15 years in the cellar, and it should be a world beating Richebourg when its time comes.

Interesting wine. Arlette came close in a blind guess, thinking it was a '98 Morey-St.-Denis grand cru. I did not give it time in the decanter. Still well short of maturity, but considerable complexity on both nose and palate. Somewhat coarse and rustic, but adequate power. Nicely spicy and no hint of excess oak. On the earthy side for Richebourg. A challenging wine at this stage but promising.

This was a disappointing tasting. I found the wine very shut down with quite a bit of wood on the nose. I tried the next night and it was slightly more open but still very tight. I will wait another 4 or 5 years to taste again.

Super rich black fruit, floral, spices, smoke and dark cocoa on the nose. The palate was huge, sappy and simply delicious. A mix of sweet black cherries and dark plums. Fresh acidity with solid tannins that should integrate nicely in years to come. Hits on all cylinders.

This is a nice wine certainly, but falls far short of being profound. It is smooth with some bite but the oak, while integrated now, has stripped this if its density and its Richebourg power... not a good future. I realize that this stands in stark contrast to the other reviewers glowing comments, but what can you do?

Gros Family "Reunion" with Richebourg and Clos Vougeot++ (Boka - Chicago IL): Tasted single blind in flight of similarly aged "Gros family" Richebourg. Incredibly lush and spicy, but also incredibly subtle and nuanced. Red cherry and black cherry on nose and palate. Lots of dizzying spice as well. Fruit is ripe but the acidity and tannins give this wine a sense of balance and really great texture. Easily WOTF since both others were corked (!) but also WOTN.

Dinner with Richebourg 1998/1999 from both Anne Gros and Hudelot-Noellat (RPM Seafood - Chicago IL): In Anne Gros / Hudelot-Noellat 1998/1999 Richebourg flight. So much density and potential, but this never fully expressed itself tonight. Bottle had just flown halfway across the country, so i suspect bottle/ travel shock might have been the culprit here.
