Cork was protruding slightly but in decent shape, soft but not saturated. Color is brownish garnet red, not quite as deep as I would expect. Nose is flat, wine is bitter with little to no fruit. This seems like it’s oxidized or at least we’ll over the hill. NR.

Drank over five hours. Cellar temperature (cool) Deep burgundy in color. Faint red fruit. Hint of cigar box. Mouth filling. Still remnants of jammy fruit left. Silky smooth. Medium plus finish. Some herbaceous notes. Although heavily extracted the wine is perfectly balanced right now. This is my first time trying QC's merlot, and I absolutely love it. Case worthy. At its peak. Drink now or over the next 18 months.
Insane lamb chop dinner tonight. Roasted Brussels sprouts by Britt.
I looked at the tasting notes below with trepidation as I have 2 of these left, now only 1. I opened a bottle last night at the Wine Watch and drank against Dunn 1997, 2005 Bordeaux, and Paul Hobbs and it may have been the wine of the evening. Decanted for 1 hour and the best of this Merlot came through. One person said it was the best QC of anything he drank and this is what you hope for from the Right Bank. The structure, color, acidity and fruit were still intact, very enjoyable and open for business over the 2 hours we drank it. Be prepared for a Merlot with good extraction, lots of structure, with a lot of age but still showing some signs of youth. I have 1 more left and I will drink it this year. Why wait for a great wine to go bad.

Heavy extraction, evident on the nose, concerned me. But this Merlot has enough balance and restraint - and certainly enough ripe fruit. Over time it became a bit plodding for me but a nice pairing with roast duck.

Deep, dark purple color, nose is quite pleasant with quite a bit of fruit and some earthiness. The wine itself was a bit of a let down. While the fruit was there, the wine fell a bit short in the finish and wasn’t all that memorable.

Deep color, tremendous depth of flavor and body, cassis, cedar, blueberries, cinnamon. Decanted for three hours. Drinking beautifully with many years of more life. It is a shame they no longer bottle a merlot. It is consistently the best merlot I have had vintage to vintage.

Cork was soft, but held together, and thankfully the wine was still fresh and excellent. I recommend drinking now, while there is still great balance of fruit and tannins/acid.

It's a shame Quilceda Creek stopped bottling a Merlot. This was wonderful with big rich fruit, blackberries and black currants, chocolate, and licorice. A well balanced wine with nice complexity and a long finish. Tasted alongside a 2008 Paloma Merlot, both were good, but Washington clearly topped California!

Magenta in color. 15.2% ABV. Blockbuster nose of blue fruits, violets, molten licorice and tobacco. Rich, concentrated and super silky on the palate. Flavors of blueberry, cassis liqueur, cinnamon and dark chocolate. The finish is exceptionally long with persistent tannins. Absolutely stunning Merlot and unfortunately the last vintage of this variety made by Quilceda Creek. This would certainly rival the best from Washington and California. Drink over the next 3-5 years.

WOW! I am a fan of Merlot and this wine was outstanding. I opened and thought this was Cabernet Sauvignon, but then an oaky sweetness with vanilla began to prevail; this is Merlot at its best and drinking in a window that is perfect. Opened and had some, 1/2 hour later got better and then with a steak dinner, was the perfect compliment. I have 1 more bottle left and I personally feel the optimum window is now and maybe 2 more years. I absolutely love this wine and so did everyone else who got a glass.

Decanted for one hour which was not enough. improved over the evening. fragrant, pungent nose. Texture is wonderful silky smooth. Lots of dark fruit, cedar and licorice. Really good depth for a merlot. The usual long length that is characteristic of QC wine. While i am sorry to see the end of QC merlots, they are so cab-like that I now agree they are better off putting in blend.

Platnick Intro Retro of Merlot (Evanston, IL): Tasted blind. Ruby red. Something off in the nose here with volatile acidity and acetone interfering with plummy fruit beneath. VA blows off a bit with time but never really goes away. On the palate this is quite a bit better with big spice-driven plum fruit. Good lift and persistence for the density of fruit. Long finish. Shame about the VA-impacted nose. My #9, Group #4.

Dark and opaque. Black centre. Young dark plum cherry robe and rim. Intense nose, dark and well fruited, deep, lots of tar, fig balsamic. Palate is deep, ripe and rich as well, deep dark cherry, plum fruit. Dark fig, balsamic, herbal notes, complex and quite delicious. Still has a nice bit of acidity and some soft to medium tannins This is an easy 93 points. Really well balanced. Matched up beautifully with a beef tenderloin (admittedly not a tough match.) but delicious after as well.

Being tasted vis-a-vis the 2006 Buccella Merlot, and while this is a great Merlot it just couldn't keep up. After 5 hours it's got a very similar nose to the Buccella, with loads of black/red berry liqueurs but then adds a lot of charred black cherry and black licorice. Mouth is decidedly more black and red-cherry driven, with a nice sweet glycerin, almost a peppered beef jerky note. The finish is definitely more spice driven, with a nice mix of pepper/cinnamon/nutmeg and even a hint of sage. The red cherry elements shine through and make this a very enjoyable Merlot. Didn't take my own advice & decant my 2nd bottle longer (approx. 30 minutes), but same result. The wine seems to have the stuffing, but just seems flat when compared to my expectation. My wife actually preferred a Columbia Crest Grand Estates Merlot ($8) over this when tasted blind! I definitely noticed the difference between the 2 bottles, but just didn't get overly excited about this bottle. In contrast, my experience with the '03 QC Merlot was much different as that wine blew me away 2 years ago.

Quilceda Creek Vertical (Hughes House - Chicago IL): Double blind tasting of what turned out to be a 10 year Quilceda vertical, with this bottle as a "ringer." Black cherry and plum aromas and flavors with a reasonable amount of spice and chocolate. Lush, round textures. Simple finish.

My 1st '06 QC Merlot - underwhelmed at this point & think the wine is shut down (I hope). Decanted for 45 minutes - plush, smooth texture & nice balance, but there was almost nothing on the nose & very little complexity on the palate. Would have been interesting to see what more air time would have done as it slightly began to open up with teh 2nd pour.
