Taster “Neecies” has it right. I think the vintage saw the wines get away from quite a few producers. These were nice young but the 4-5 producers I’ve had made wines that kind of fall apart 7-10 years on. I think the high alcohol and ripe fruit really needed more acidity to hold things together. Not surprisingly, the producers who work new oak did better as their wines had more structure but are obviously not traditional.

Threw quite a bit of sediment upon decanting. Initially quite jammy and port-like on the nose but after about an hour it balanced out a bit into camphor balls, potpourri, charcoal embers, and ripe blue fruit. Rounded in the mouth with heated blueberries and some black pepper trying to poke through the density. Hot vintage for sure. Lots of tannin in the back of the mouth but dominated by the concentrated chunkiness in the mid-palate. A bit disjointed and inharmonious. Wanted more edginess. First instinct is to hold this a bit longer to see if things come together but not sure the fruit is in it for a longer haul.

Sweet and ripe--wouldn't have to tell an experienced taster that this came from a hot vintage. A decent drink but lacks essential Rhone-ness. Lots of sediment--decant needed.

This has a sweet, heady mountain berry bouquet drive-train that were it not for the sweaty animal (hog and smoking pork) components on sidecar would almost make me think Anderson Valley Pinot Noir in a blind sniffing. The sweetness is on parade through the palate but there's not a feel of heaviness, overt oak, nor out-of-whack alcohol that one must expect from '07 CdP. This bottle is just opened, but thankfully so far I've not picked up any of the typical prune juice thing I get in many of its vintage/region peers. There are some even-keeled white pepper and spice components that round out this excellent, smooth and balanced CdP. A touch kirschy here and there, spicy, and overall not too hard on the palate. This is the kind of wine I would have tripled down on a decade back, but I'd rather drink it as more of a novelty or special case wine for my current tastes.

WCW Eleven: From a magnum. Ripe, bordering on hedonistic, with strong notes of Medjool date, fig cake, and red berry liqueurs, backed by kelp, iodine, dried blood, and an agreeable kiss of brett. Very nice freshness and lift, ridiculously enjoyable now. Drink by 2020-2022. 92-93.
This wine possesses something rare in the wine world and that's the combination of both power and finesse. The best Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo based wines have it and I can see now why reviewers have called this producer's style Burgundian in nature. Loads of complexity and balance. I have not had this wine in more traditional vintages but I can only assume that they style is old school CdP, which would be a compliment in my book.

Purchased, decanted at restaurant and enjoyed for 2 hrs.
A well integrated Grenache-style wine (slightly too sweet feeling for wife) with M+ tannins and acids. M-bodied for the style and quite attractive. Has a fair amount of complexity, and still good wiggle room for more mature aromas to come forward as it matures. For my taste, this should be much more attractive in 3-5 yrs from now.
Too young at the get-go, with still fermentation aromas in it. But woke up nicely already after 1 hr. Restrained (for the style) and very well made. Performed miracles with the wagyu plate and the cheese plate.
Wife: 89p.
At fabulous La Rochelle 'Sanno' (Tokyo).

At bistro du sommelier. Splash decanted and drank over 2 hours. Earthy and barnyard-y aromas. Very ripe dark fruit with fair amount of spice. Noticeable heat on the medium finish. Tannins are pretty well integrated, giving this a smooth mouthfeel. Drank side by side with the 2010 vintage of this wine and the 2007 is by far the more ready to drink vintage. Don't see much room for improvement from here.

This is drinking well. The fruit is ripe, maybe a touch too much so for my taste, but balanced somewhat by savory olive. A little prickly heat but not too much. Good, not great, not sure it's getting any better.

Like walking next to a barn door that is wide open and sending out its animal, horse and earthy scents, coupled with black raspberry and red plums. Open and ready for business, tasters with an affinity for those aromas will like this wine a lot more than those that don't.

Last wine of the night, difficult to remember any specifics other than i was very, very good. The other tasting notes have me wondering what they were drinking? This is a big 07 CdP that needs at least a couple of hours in the decanter. I'm happy I have a few left.

Pop & pour. A big dark purple wine. The nose shows roasted aromatics with some savory pit fruit. This shows some spicy dark berries, but the longer it is open, it just takes on more concentration, flab, & grapey character. Totally Parkerized and unable to truly age and improve. What a sad waste of likely great fruit.

A winner with a half hour decant and a dinner party pot pie with pancetta, white beans and chard. More mineral and less obvious fruit, I thought this was the most old world style of the 3 CDPs I served with dinner and the best with the food. Great with an earthy food complement.

PnP. Drank over three days. Dark purple in the glass. Nose of dark red and blue fruit, tobacco, and oak. Heavy palate of stewed red pie cherries, cocoa, tobacco, Christmas spices, black tea, and vanilla. Finish is medium and could use a little more acidity and length. Tannins are supple. This wine is a bit heavy, and could use some more finesse. But all in all, a damn tasty CdP.

This wine is a dusty red in color. Very nice tannins which needs a bit of air to mellow out. This wine is much more approachable than a year ago. I'm thinking another year will improve this wine even more. I think this wine will continue to improve and the patient will reap the rewards. The wine has nice concentration. I tasted raisins, spice (tannins) and current berries. Amazing vintage.

Popped & poured at local restaurant. With just a bit of time, crushed cherries dominate the nose. Ditto on the palate, with milk chocolate on the back end. Finish was a bit short and hot, or I would have rated higher.

Drinking much better that when I had this a year ago; much more open for business. Cherry, blueberry, fig paste, pretty creamy and lush, the tannins have softened big time in one year. Still could use a little time to develop those nice secondary flavors of an aged CDP, but no foul in drinking this now.

Very atypical of traditional du Pape to me. Ruby red in color. Nose of plum flesh. There are flavors of cherry, plum and rasberry. There is also a palate coating" minty" flavor that I cannot identify along with cinammon. Perhaps my brother articulated it best when commenting that it reminded him of a chocolate covered strawberry.
This taste more Pinot than du Pape to me. Cheers.

Drank while eating a rotisserie chicken and watching Friday night fights. I'm feeling good. The nose is a bit tight. But opened up with air. Blueberries, plums, highlighted with cedar, tea bags and licorice. The most memorable thing about this wine is its mouthfeel. Black cherry pie, silky plum fruit. Dark and hedonistic, even a bit pruney, but I enjoy this. Its really a stylistic preference. You have to know what you're getting into with this wine. This isn't a wine for traditionalists. This wine is like Iggy Pop... in your face, loud and at 15 percent alcohol... dangerous. I love it.

Decanted about 2 hours before the note. Super tight upon opening and not giving off much one the nose. After about a couple of hours of air this started to really shine. Raspberry reduction sauce, crushed rocks, interesting mineral streak and a whopping dose of cigar box. Little bit of garrigue, baking spices, clove, sweet gingerbread, creosote and some iron. Palate has polished out nicely but still has some angular tannins on the finish which is a bit drying and chalky. Lush raspberry laden finish, definitely some alcohol showing, more like a raspberry liqueur. Nice wine that is tight upon opening but fleshes out after some air. Lots of promise for this wine but the alcohol is a touch bothersome.

Very CDP. 2007 was a big luscious year. Chewy brambly fruit. A bit forward at this time. Once the fruit diminishes slightly, you'll have a much cleaner balance. Hints of tobacco, chocolate - but slightly veiled by the fruit. Still great, if you can't wait - but better with a few more years of bottle aging.

Decanted two hours. Holy crap, what a nose. Blue and red fruits, with vanilla and, hiding waaaaay in the back, some of those classic olive and tobacco notes one expects in CDP. Probably the most forward and primary wine I'vehad from Chateauneuf, but there's a lovely balance to this that never once comes across as overripe or hot. Beautifully made wine. I think those secondary flavors in the background will become more prominent over time, but it's hard to imagine this drinking better than it does now. 93.

Nose of strawberry-rhubarb pie, bramble fruit, black pepper, dried flowers and minerals The palate mirrors many of the aromas on the nose, but with a darker profile. Peppery mid-palate and med. length finish. Dusty tannins are a little bitter but not offensive; very fresh throughout. Hard to resist in its youth but looking forward to its development. Fantastic entry level CdP. I hope the rest of the '07's drink this well. 91+

On the nose, nice dark cherry, asian spice/black licorice, hint of black pepper, litle alcohol on the back end (definitely could breath a little more and I'm sure that would go away). More open on the nose than a lot of other people are saying, in my opinion (I'm drinking it in 375ml format, so not sure if that has that big of an effect). In the mouth, Nice, blackberry, black pepper, a little tea component as well, nice tannins, nice finish, a little bitter, with just a slight bit of gameiness, and very nice minerality good stuff.

I've had mixed results with this producer over the years. While I think that this producer employs a traditional rather than a modern approach (and I prefer the traditional), my experiences with the '90, '95 and '98 have been variable, and I've stayed away since. Chris gave me this bottle as a birthday gift last week; I'm assuming he sells it in his shop. When first uncorked, it seemed to be Exhibit A for those who call the '07 Chateauneuf vintage to be overripe and hot. Initially, I found it to be too raisiny and had too much alcohol on nose and palate. But after three hours of air, it mellowed out and became much more drinkable, much softer, more balanced. There's a bit of cedar and plenty of strawberry and cherry fruit inside a silky mouthfeel. It's pretty nice, with air, but any excitement is not because it's a "must buy" (what, in this overpriced, overhyped vintage is a must buy? For me, thus far, very little), but rather because it began so badly but then pulled itself together.

We had this for our vegetarian Thanksgiving dinner. It matched perfectly with our savory, earthy mushroom and pine nut stuffing. You could tell the wine was still young and tight--especially on the nose, but it did have very nice licorice and spice flavors with a little leather. Very good structure. I would like to get another bottle and hold it for at least five years to see how it evolves.

i agree with tooch, this wine was rocking. pitch colored in the glass. i actually picked up quite a bit on the nose though: dark cherry jam, asian spice and some cedar. the palate is so silky. this wine is all about the mouthfeel. the blackberry, chocolate-covered blueberries, black licorice, spice and black tea flavors just glide across the palate. the tannins are sweet and lovely and the finish is long and smooth. very approchable now. i loved sipping this wine. would never have guessed it as a CdP blind... probably would've guessed a california syrah. awesome qpr.

The only thing holding this bottle back is the nose, which I thought was closed. The mouthfeel of this wine is just fantastic. Flavors of chocolate, cinnamon, dark cherries, blueberry reduction sauce, and a slight hint of mint. Of all the 2007 CdP's I've tasted thus far, this one is the most feminine. Most CdP's I've had have been just over the top on the fruit OR totally closed with tight tannis. This was the first that I had that seems approachable, yet ageworthy. I've decided that I will buy more of this, and am VERY interested to see how this ages. One of the better QPR's of the year for me.

Rich black fruits on the nose, this smelled delicious. A high intensity palate of plum and blackberries but extracted feeling and out of balance with the acidity and tannins. Very strong acidity, even stronger alcoholic bite on the finish. A good wine, but the heat on the finish is hard to get around.

Rich strawberry scents, some tobacco, and hidden blackberry scents come off of the wine. The wine is soft with a nice mouth feel and strawberry flavors through the end. The tannins are on the lighter side, but evident, and the acidity is nice and full.

2007 Chateauneufs (K&L Wines, San Francisco): 60% Grenache. Deep purple center with lighter rim. Overripe nose with alcohol and prune. Faux upfront lushness that is quickly rendered thin and astringent due to the alcoholic heat. Hopelessly out of balance.

Cheers.

Wow this is nice! Incredible CdP at this price point. Nose of tobacco, cherry and pepper. Very nice mouthfeel with big fruit on the palate and a long finish. This is still young and getting better. Glad i have more.

Dark Chewy big fruits. Spice and smoky meats. Good balance. A novice got some tobacoo and chocolate without prompting.

Nice, but very young. Some '07s are ok now, but let this one sleep for at least 4 years.

Medium bodied with a deep fruit core structure. Cherries, saddle leather. Still quite primary, but very nicely balanced.

Big and bold. This wine should be held for several years to enjoy. It should be decanted for quite a few hours if you plan to drink before 2012. Very full bodied wine. beautiful structure.

Nose of strawberry-rhubarb pie, bramble fruit, black pepper, dried flowers and minerals
The palate mirrors many of the aromas on the nose, but with a darker profile. Peppery mid-palate and med. length finish. Dusty tannins are a little bitter but not offensive; very fresh throughout. Hard to resist in its youth but looking forward to its development. Fantastic entry level CdP. I hope the rest of the '07's drink this well. 91+

Bitter on finish needs time. Dark fruit and spice. Strong stone elements. Some coffee and some floral nuances. Fairly complex for the price. 07s are def hot, but I like the heat.

Tasted after allowing to open up for 24 hours or so, and definitely got better. Tasting notes still consistent, but all aromas and flavors are definitely more pronounced this time, had to give it an extra point.
