Red fruit, dark chocolate, vanilla, with secondary notes of tobacco leaf and hint of soy. Tannins well integrated. Long finish. Drink now or hold for more secondary development.

Still young, and with the reserved character of the 2008 vintage, the wine offers more on the earthy, truffle and black cherry nose than on the full-bodied, tannic, structured palate. With 2 hours of air, the wine filled out, but it retained its sense of old-school, classic and reserved character. Drink from 2028-2040.

I slow oxed this for about an hour, had some of the bottle, and put the rest in the fridge for the following day. This is a dark red, tongue-staining wine with just a tad of sediment left in the bottle. The nose is full of promise, with wet earth, chocolate sauce, raw cocoa, and espresso. In the mouth, I get fruit cake and black cherry elements, all wrapped in a velvet throw. This is all very nice, but the middle of the palate is oddly hollow. There’s a long, 40+ second finish, with aspects of roast coffee and plum sauce. Overall, this is a solid wine that opens nicely with air and still feels young for its age. The hollow midpalate brings this down a few points and leaves a question mark in my mind – it’s really a gamble whether this is going to go away with more time or simply get worse. I’d err on the side of drinking up, but it’s a tough call. 91 points.

Decanted for one hour before serving. Plum fruit, cedarwood, dark fruit, chocolate and herbs on the nose. Palate has generous power with ripe and plhs fruit, yet the finish is slightly short. In fact, it offers amazing QPR. Best to give it a minimal 2 hour decant if you drink now. 91-92

Drinking well with a nice balance of dark fruit. Not much upfront and the finish was less than memorable, but the overall picture was that it is time to drink now!

Drinking well but still quite primary, even with hour plus of decant. Red fruit on the nose, with more plum and mocha coming out on the palate. Balanced and precise. Room to develop further with tertiary notes.

A bit reserved, this can use another 2-3 years in the cellar before all its richly textured, full-bodied, multi-layered black plum, espresso, truffle, violet, and cocoa charms are fully ready to imbibe. This is going to be worth the wait.

Magnum. 92-93

One hour decant; which it needed. Lots of sediment. The 2008 left banks are indeed approaching their drinkability window. Very classic, Pomerol style. Lots and lots of Ferrous/Iron terroir on this wine. Mild red cherish aromas too and touches of sandalwood. Medium bodied with adequate depth of Red Fruits on the palate. Tannins are very much in check. Earthy/Terroir finish. I’m pretty much in agreement with Jane Anson (Decanter) on this wine. Drink now; but won’t be going downhill either. Would rate a bit higher if a bit more concentrated and perhaps some more darker fruits were there too.
Finally opening up a bottle. Ullage is good and cork is tight. Just a bit of sediment. Color is robust and darker than anticipated. Nose is all that you want from a Pomerol – fleshy, dark plums, chocolate, rose, and something floral. As for the palate, you would think it’s not a 2008 given all the broad, dark flavors of plum, blackberry, sour cherry, cassis, and earth. Toward the finish, tannins peaks through, ending with something watermelon-like and an ever so slight touch of bitterness. Overall, an enjoyable wine. I liked this wine and score it a 92, but can’t score it higher due to the finish.

Decanted for a couple of hours and consumed over several hours with dinner and after dinner. Lovely fruit-forward nose of blackberry, moss, and leather that became earthier and less aromatic with more time and air. Earthy, rich flavor with a 10 second finish. Overall was expecting a bit more but still was a very nice bottle. Probably could benefit from 2-3 more years of cellaring.

Just starting to develop its secondary aromatic profile you find truffle, licorice, smoke, wet earth and sweet red fruits. On the palate, the wine is concentrated, lush, round and tannic. The wine needs at least 5 more years in the cellar to allow for more softening and secondary development.
A wine that was very ripe but not over-extracted, this was a crowd pleaser from the first flight. It showed off a vibrant nose of red plums, blueberry, espresso, licorice, truffle, and damp earth. Soft on the palate, with a nice mouthfeel and silky tannins. Opulent but not in-your-face. A silky finish with medium acidity. A good showing and should improve as it gains complexity as it ages.

This royal ruby purple pleasure sports a nose of plum, cassis, cherry, blackberry, and the iron rich soil. The truffled chocolates, dried licorice, spice and coffee integrate with tannins that are firm, but savory. Rich and complex if decanted long enough this wine is finesse to the finish.

Dark and inky purple, a paradise of plum, cassis and blackberry, this joy needs minimum two hours of decanting to savor its richness and complexity. Exceptionally balanced with superbly integrated tannins, the capuccinno with spice and chocolate are surrounded by a spring garden. This finish is all finesse.
Needs a good decant. Better the next day (a little bit leftover was still doing well a week later). Cassis, cherry cordials, vanilla, new leather, flowers, and earth on the nose. Cassis, plum, cherry, earth, tart cherry, and a little vanilla on the palate. Nice acidity, medium-firm integrated tannins, delicious medium finish. Overall, I really enjoyed this wine. It hit all of my Bordeaux buttons and was quite delicious.

Consumed over 3 nights. First night the wine was delicious, but very young. Great purity of flavors through out all phases. On the third night this wine had turned lush and pure, with gorgeous mouth feel, deep red fruits, anise, violet, and mineral.

Le Gay, Pomerol, 08-10 quick check. There seems to be quite a spread on opinions on this wine (see also my notes on the 2009). Medium ruby with purple core. Nose of dark and dried fruit with lots of toast and oak. On the palate medium bodied, light, sweet and rather harmless. Perfectly drinkable from a commercial perspective but for more demanding Claret drinkers it lacks structure, aromatic depth and Bordeaux typicity. This is not far behind the 2009 which has in my view the same issues. See for yourself. For me at least, this is in the 87-89 range.
