  • Mmmm this does not disappoint. Absolutely wonderful depth, intensity and length. Still mainly primary, though with lovely cedar wood and new saddle leather notes. Very perfumed, violets, dry rose petals. Menthol, blackcurrant and cassis. Medium plus body, very fine tannin. Great balance of fruit and structure. Hugely long and persistent, good complexity. Drinking now but will continue to develop for complexity and tertiary notes. Enjoy.

  • Opulent green peppery nose, and with a really deep and lush core. Thought this a really good left bank. The depth of the wine reveals its class and pedigree. Tobacco, plums and dark chocolate powder with a ton of power. Finished long. However, again, while I think it’s good, it doesn’t hit the heights which warrants the price and the vintage.

  • A private dinner (Restaurant Vinkeles **, Amsterdam, NL): Mature but lively appearance. Mint, cedar, nutty evolution, black cherries, earth, flowers, firm tannins, masculine style, structured and powerful, not voluptuous but complex and rich, long and spicy finish, drying, with lots of grip. On the austere side. Very good rather than great.

  • Next to the Lafleur this seemed a little more dense and chunky. Great dark fruit flavors, earth, mushrooms, floral notes. Nice balance and texture just not as ethereal as the Lafleur.

  • This is phenomenal wine. The first bottle of Petrus for three of us sharing. We were all suspect of the hype, but it was a beautiful bottle of wine. Smoke, tobacco, earth all give tremendous weight to black and red fruit. Not a heavy wine. Just silky and beautiful.

  • Gruaud Larose 1986-Mouton-haut-brion 1996- 2022-Petrus 1995

    Gruaud Larose 94/95
We drank it a bit too warm, but here again an astonishing balance and equilibrium of the wine where the nose and mouth did show some age, but nothing was unpleasant or already fleeting! Nicely round, you could smell and taste a warm year, alcohol was still present in a pleasant way, tobacco, leather in the nose, it was for a long time the best wine of the evening compared to mouton 22 and haut-brion 2005,

De Haut Brion 1996 90/100..? , which by the way was overripe and had plums in the nose ! Wonder if it was the wine or the cellar that decided it so… Disappointed ,

Mouton 2022 : 92/100 . Mouton had a very nice nose with mint and eucalyptus again, but the mouth had too much acidity! Really out of balance! Maybe with age he would come into balance even more, but then the nose can also disappear,

Petrus 1995 : 98/100 And then came the surprise , we thought we were on 90 or 98 , warmth in the nose , I hadn't smelled the merlot and thought we were on cabernet ! strange, this got better over time, my neighbor had smelled Merlot and Pomerol ! strong ! What I sometimes have with Petrus, is misses sometimes finesse and has too much power ; but that
was not present here, what a balance, what finesse, what a wine! in the nose it had smoked meat, leather and still some dark fruit, but nothing that made the wine unstable , why I was on cabernet was because of the finesse, and the wine was again long…on the mouth, what a beauty ! !

  • No formal notes taken while drinking. Essentially no bricking. Drank over 4 hours shared between 3 people and the wine went through three distinct phases during that time. For the first hour was very characteristic older Bordeaux with cedar and sour cherry, but perhaps more intense and very good. Between hours 1-2 after opening became much more complex with a variety of herbs, cedar, and smoke meat. Outstanding finish where new flavors came out after I started talking. Settled after 2 hours with cherries, red currants, and less smoke. Objectively and subjectively the best red wine I've ever had.

Preceded by a Krug 169eme and followed with 1986 d'Yquem. Cheers to friends I don't deserve!

  • Deep inky purple, with thick legs and significant extraction. Some tannin bite, and acids still bright, whilst having quite some heft and alcohol heat. Deep florals, ripe cassis, bit of cranberry, dried grass, toasted cloves, nutmeg, and a strong sense of tobacco and tar at the back. Very long, smoky finish, with flowers and black fruits coming back in waves. Fabulous wine!

  • Decanted for 3 hour before serving. The nose is big and deep which exhibits spice, herbs, green pepper, smoke, red fruit, tobacco, perfume and gravel. The palate is so round and lush with serious layers and complexity wrapped in a silky robe. It just keeps getting finer and better in the glass. A long decant is necessary to enjoy this beauty now.

  • So big and opulent, yet so light on its feet and elegant — not the least bit heavy despite being so rich. Such a beautiful wine. Still a baby, much room left to grow, but quite a treat to enjoy today as well.

  • Regular dinner group (@ JvT): Tasting this wine blind my notes were: Beautiful and luxurious bouquet with red berries, beautiful herbs and spices and some bell pepper. On the palate very luxurious as well with some rustic impressions, red berries, chocolate, truffle, earth and autumn impressions, Beautiful acidity and tannin with a lovely bite. Great length. Already a superb pleasure, but with a some more age the last edges (which are in fact nice and possible complementary) will disappear. Truly great exclusive, refined and delicious. 98 - 99+

  • Brief note from blind tasting yesterday at a friends place.
Very animalistic and lots of barnyard to begin with, with some air it became very elegant, clearly a classy Pomerol. Tremendous length broad palet and lingering finish.
Will keep this up for quit a while, but it's very much "a point". For me the red wine of the evening very closely followed by Harlan 1994.
A Treat you don't drink every day. Thx John ;-)

  • May Meeting of Friendless Drinkers Club (Vancouver Club): Double decanted 2 hours before and put into decanter just prior to drinking. Oak and floral on the nose. Full bodied, glycerine, blackberry and minerals. Very long and soothing aftertaste. Spectacular wine

  • Tasted from a friend's cellar. Stored there since release. Clear ruby color all the way to the rim. Nose and palate very tight and even 2 hours of air didn't open things up. Clearly a very nicely balanced and complete wine but utterly immature at this point.

  • Rubino limpido, profuma di frutta (ribes rosso, melagrana, lampone e fichi) e spezie e tabacco dolce.
Bocca setosa, frutto, acidità presente e bellissima... grande bottiglia.

My 1st Petrus and what a pleasure. Incredible depth and strength. Nose of berries, earth and leather. lovely

  • Superior fruit, unctuous viscosity, tannic balance, aromatic focus and long finish. Blueberries and sweet red berries. Perfumed, dark rose petals. Cedar with vanillin tones. Tannins well integrated but still a young wine with predominance of fruit. Hints of sap, menthol. Subtle top soil aromas and pencil lead. A spectacular wine that evolved to an velvety chocolate like finish after four hours of being open. Beautifully complex but seamlessly integrated.

  • Very big, blue, bruising wine. Obviously well made but not showing itself clearly (still). Am I meant to be always disappointed by Petrus? Call me a heathen, but in most vintages, I would prefer Masseto to this.

  • °°° Bordeaux 1995 °°°: Deep intensive garnet in color. Nose of leather, a hint earth and lots of ripe red berries (raspberry). Very long, powerful and multilayered. Tannins are not yet integrated suggesting that there is more to come. Nice sweetness. Despite the fact that this Petrus is already very nice to drink now, I see future potential. If I'd have a bottle I would put it away for at least another 10 years.

  • Excellent nose of graphite, pencil, tea and some mints. The nose is developing beautifully in the glass during the 20 mins of my tasting. Very enjoyable.

Concentrated black fruit constitutes sweet up front. Very rich and balanced structure

Lovely finish with more than 40 sec

  • Deep garnet with edge thinning and medium viscosity in the glass. Memorable nose of plum, black fruit, wet earth, sweet spice, graphite, raspberry, smoke and attic dust. Medium body and one of the more composed and harmonious reds I’ve tasted. Soft red fruit, tart black fruit, sumptuous earth and minerals, mushroom, pepper and BBQ smoke on the palate. Firm, svelte tannin is perfectly integrated into the deft acidic core. Long, moving finish. Powerful and elegant…pedigree and quality are totally evident.

  • David's MNSC (Seventh Son): decanted for 2hrs. poised, elegant and balanced. didnt reach the heights of other vintages in terms of complexity. had a bit of napa feel to it. could have been a harlan!

  • Again this stunning depth on the nose, sweet, hints of milk chocolate, cloves, violets, spices. On the palate tannic, still quite tight and slightly closed, but very well balanced showing great purity of fruit and wonderful length. Rather youthful. Great future. 96-97+

  • Even better than last time we opened this bottle.. Perfect balance and colour with long aftertaste. Shows no signs of aging at all. For me a once in a lifetime occassion and experience. Of course never never never worth the price, but that's not mine to decide.

  • Opened 3 hours before dinner, color showed slight bricking but still youthful. Intense but subtle, the finish is very long and very plesant. Good balance of fruit and floral.

  • Seeing this on the wine list of a restaurant in Pittsburgh frankly blew me away. Like many others I know, this was on the bucket list. Normally, I would never pay the restaurant highway robbery of a price for a wine such as this. That said, it IS the 1995 Petrus. One must seriously consider giving up some bank for such a legendary and iconic wine from an excellent vintage. The seductress that the Petrus is, she flirted and I gave in.

When the aroma and bouquet hit my nose I knew I had made the right decision and it left me speechless for quite a while. I was starting to think I shouldn't eat a thing and just let this be my meal. Just pure beauty and perfection in a bottle. black fruits, leather, humidor/cigar box, wet stones and flowers wafted up out of the bowl of my glass. I was stupified. Honestly, I have nosed and tasted thousands of wines. NOTHING has even come close to this. On the palate it was bold, thick, rich and powerful. Incredibly full bodied and intensely elegant in the mouth. On the palate it was licorice, fresh tobacco, leather, black fruit and hints of vanilla, mocha and minerals. It just coated my mouth and the finish was practically endless. Again, I have never experienced that length of a finish from anything I have tasted before. It just grabbed on to my mouth and clung there, as if it didn't want to go down my throat. Still some ultra fine and very well integrated tannins and just the right touch of acidity to be balanced and clearly demonstrating the ability to go another 20 years in the bottle.

A majestic, elegant and bold beauty of a wine. 50+5+15+19+9=98 pts

  • Tasting blind against other great wines is perhaps THE truest test of greatness. Or perhaps it is only the truest test of one's palate and personal taste.
At any rate, this particular bottle did not impress me much when tasted (BLIND) against such other heavy hitters as Grange, Opus One, Caymus SS.
My blind notes: Nose: minerals, blood, iron, a bit of dried cherry. Mouth: wet stone, metal, old dried fruit, more blood.
I ranked this 8/9 blind; group ranked 7/9. Greatly indebted to kw for opening this up!!!!

  • Okay, Bucket-list wine for me. Opened to a virgin palate (first wine of day) and it was open right away. Nose of wet-rock and dark cherry. Mouthfeel was full bodied and the tannins had grip. But a full compliment of layered fruit and chocolate greeted us. A great wine, almost as good as the 2001 Paloma. But since it was $1261.00 more than the Paloma, the QTP was about the worst I have ever had. Thanks, but I'll never buy another.

  • 95% merlot, 5% cabernet franc. Mahogany brownish red in the glass. On the nose fresh black fruit, leather, light earth, plums, prunes, and cedar box. A silky texture in the mouth with flavors of strong bittersweet chocolate, vanilla, coffee, plum, prunes, cassis, and leather. This was a great wine; however, naturally due to its iconic, legendary and mind boggling status, I was slightly disappointed. I was expecting to be emotionally paralyzed by the moment and I certainly wasn’t. Nonetheless, a Petrus certainly is all about elegance versus shock and awe, and I imagine that this bottle’s elegance and nuances will continue to develop over the next couple of decades. At least I hope!

  • 1995 Bordeaux Showdown (Azuma): Powerful blueberry, cedar, tobacco, liquorice and coffee bean aromas comprise the nose. The palate is bold, rich, deep, intense and yet also balanced - with each component in proportion to the other. Layers of flavour and complexity. A great experience. Will improve over the next 15+ years.

  • Bern's Petrus dinner. Dark purple. Beautiful nose of black currants and violets. This is a glorious wine that is just entering it's teenage years. It's just beginning to show how incredible it will be in another 5 or so years. Be patient, but if you have a 375 ml btl, go ahead, open one up.
