As a few years back I have not been impressed by this wine at all. It lacks the usual complexity and elegance of DRC wines, especially in a vintage that was kind to red wines. Light bodied, and somewhat incomplete. Overall a decent wine, but a real letdown considering the maker and the vintage.

It's been a long time coming - my intro to DRC. Slow-ox for 90 minutes before service - upon first taste, we elected to decant the remainder; a bit of tannic roughness right at the tail end of the finish that needed a bit more air to resolve. In the glass, pale rose at the rim, shading to a deeper, somewhat opaque dark berry red at the core. On the nose, a fascinating, focused mix of crushed cherries and rose petals, and a hint of peppery cinnamon. On the palate, delicate, silky, and smooth, with light cherries, rosewater, orange pith, bay leaves, and mild floral/herbal elements weaving in and out of the mix. Mild tannins assert themselves on the finish. Not quite the religious experience I was hoping for, but there's no question that this is a delicious, outstanding wine, and the aromatics are unique - that seamless blend of cherry and rose sets it apart.

Weekend in Michigan with Wine; 8/5/2023-8/6/2023 (Asian Spice House - Buchanan MI): I haven't tasted this wine in over a decade and tonight's bottle was (by far) the best it has ever been for me. Fresh and mature red berries and cherries come in and out of focus over the course of several hours with both sweet and savory spice. Good enough weight, great length. Really fantastic bottle, even with fully soaked-through cork.

My first time with RC. Moderate density and concentration. Nose and palate both very complex, like a firework of aromas. When starting to identify one another one pops up, sour cherries come back and fourth. Already shows some tertiarty aromas (mosty earth-like). The balance and elegance are just extraordinary. To me more a piece of art than a bottle of wine so scoring would be pointless

Stemmy, complex d fruit is ripe but the tannins are a bit harsh. Intensity and density but not quite the elegance and finesse of the east of the lineup. Though the freshness of fruit and acidity augers it’s got more time left

I was skeptical of some of the recent notes indicating this might be ready to go, but it is indeed in a good spot and has mellowed and shed its tannins much quicker than I would have figured possible. The aromas segue from green stems on opening to the classic Vosne cinnamon spice with more air. The fruit, which used to be so dark with an element of sur-maturite bordering on figgy, has mellowed into pale crimson tones with a gentle concentration - more watercolor than oil. After an hour or so in the decanter to smooth out some of the spiky stemminess the texture turns to pure silk. But while this is in a beautiful spot it's still not a mature wine - so satisfying to drink but probably needs a decade to peak.

The nose jumped out with stems, coffee beans, vr spice and herbs upon opening. Palate had lovely sweet red currant and orange peel. For a 02 especially drc, it lacked the mid palate weight and stuffing, but it showed beautifully tonight nevertheless. It is unmistakenly drc. Drinking at its peak. Pretty sure it won’t improve much from here.

Fantastic bouquet right off the pop. Big DRC florals and stems. Yeah, the oak is pretty big, but the fruit on this is so robust and vibrant that the whole thing is delicious overall. Sexy and racy. More expressive and a more impressive showing than the last bottle. A polished and very well built bottle of wine.

I bought 3 bottles of these and this was the first that tasted ready. I drank the other two a few years ago. I think it is a point now. Delicous but with still plenty of backbone. I don't suppose it will improve any further but I could be wrong. I could still taste it the next day - very impressive. I kept mine in a warmish house for the last 12 or so years and so it may be forward of well stored bottles.

Whistler Wines; 12/31/2016-1/3/2017: Nose is immediately indicative of DRC with heavy florals, a stemmy perfume, and present Vosne spice. Reading much more like a Romanée St. Vivant than Echezeaux, soft and elegant rather than powerful. Beautiful smelling and drinking. Already pretty silky. Really curious as to what is in this.

Bright Burgundy color with a very vague chokecherry bouquet and flavor, with asphalt notes in the ending. The wine was very acidic when first opened and never completely came into balance. After sitting for a while, it took on unpleasant barbecue and bullion notes. These pop up in most of my Burgundies. I am likely overrating this wine with an 89 score, about the highest I have been able to reach after tasting multiple very expensive Burgundy wines over the last few years. I do admit that I may have a tasting peculiarity that affects the taste profile of red Burgundy, but then my wife has the same problem. So I think that we should all give it up, and buy something else, and be very skeptical of all the mumbo-jumbo about restraint, and balance, and terroir, and holy sites, and holy hills. If you and I haven't been able to get to ratings in the high 90's without a bit of fudging with these wines, then we should move on.

Enjoyable and classical pinot noir, although not as exciting as one may expect from a DRC wine. Round, smooth, floral aromas. Elegant and balanced while not very complex. Moderate length, subtle tanins. Very nice but not great. No point to hold it any longer.

Burgundy dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): This bottle is starting to browning at the rim. The nose starts with strong DRC stem note which need to a hint of green impression, sweet decadent red fruits, raspberry jam, flowers, a slight hint of soy and sweet Vosne spices. Medium concentration, lovely silky palate, mineral, ripe sweet red fruits, good acidity and finish. I initially liked it a lot but deducted a couple points towards to the end for not having vibrant energy. I wonder the stem inclusion was the right decision as the stem note is quite strong and a bit out of sync as the fruit concentration is not there. Further cellaring could help lessening the stem note but the wine seems to be close to the peak. If you enjoy the DRC stem note, you may enjoy this a bit more. DRC signature is quite strong and it is very enjoyable.

Respectable, clean, sophisticated bottle of wine that offers a certain mildness, very 2002 but not very Vosne. Lacks much depth or umph, past it's primary stage but still has a long way to go before maturity gives this more to say.

Translucent red in color, drank alongside the 99 version of this wine. This wine is much more floral, aromatic and shows much better transparency. Palate is driving with floral notes if slightly lacking in focus when compared with the bigger brothers, and a tad light. A very good VR 1er cru if not as dense and focused as the bigger DRC bros.

Knightsbridge El Bulli Buyout at Next Restaurant (Next Restaurant, Chicago IL): Fantastic aromatics right from the start. Very spicy red cherry and berry on the nose and palate with great concentration. Powerful brown baking spice notes all throughout the palate. Some hints of bitter chocolate. Medium bodied with a long finish. Great balance. This bottle was in a great place, but clearly has years left to go. Wonderful!

Tasting at Chateau Gallo (Chateau Gallo): Ruby red in the glass, with a slight fading at the rim. Nose of cherries, spice, cranberry, citrus, orange rind, pomegranate, ginger, and a slight floral component. Over the course of the evening, a truffle note also emerged. On the palate, tart cherries, cranberry, tea and mineral. Lovely high acidity, fairly low tannin, exceptional balance; elegance in a glass. While the nose gained greater complexity over the course of the evening, air did not do the palate any favours.

Nice ruby color with slight bricking at the edge, deep red fruit and very aromatic nose with Asian spices, red flowers and just the right amount of stems, slightly let down by the light to medium palate which is good but not as intense as the nose. Drinking very well now and I would say the nose between Grands Ech/RSV yet palate of an Ech.

Much more tannic and muscular than my bottle last year, and less in the mood to be drank. Not that I would let that stop me. It still has that seriously exotic flavor with all sorts of purples and blues in the fruit spectrum. So much going on here even if it may be on the road to closing up.

I won't write much in any detail of this wine. I found what Keith Levenberg said. IMO, this is the most beautiful Burgundy 1er Cru in the world. If it has Grand Cru's aftertaste, I would rate it 98-99/100.
First nose reminds me the fruit scent of Romanee Conti. Second glass is like drinkin' Tache, fruit combined with mineral, clean and spicy in its finished. Then...scent of Richebourg terroir comes over till the end. ( 3 and a half hours of testing )
The aftertaste is warm and tender, very kind, very beautiful indeed. The Mmmm...aftertaste !!!
This is really the perfect balance of elegance and intensity with highly detailed, cherry pit, red and black pinot fruit mixed with brown spices and floral tones. There is an explosion of fruit just before the finish that eventually comes after a very long, extended mid palate. Very complete and stylish.

One of those wines that just makes you shake your head in wonder. Filled to the gills with character and in such an accessible package, too -- no guilt at all uncorking this a decade or two before maturity. There is tannin here but it's as finely textured cashmere as the source material would suggest. And hey, what a compelling case this is for the occasional sacrilege of blending a bunch of grand crus together! This makes an impact from the very first sip, with fruit that's intense in flavor but still slender and feminine in proportion as well as a dusting of spicy clove and iron ore. It's particularly impressive because the actual flavors of the fruit -- more of a maroon taste than red with its deep tinge of pruniness or figginess -- are things that would suggest the kind of sur-maturité normally leading to a fat wine, but this is so elegant and supple that it's almost like being teased with a feather. And it gives you a whole mouthful of all the things it has other than fruit, most prominently that evocative iron minerality. This is so good it's almost hard to imagine how the grand cru lineup can end up being progressively better, but then again half of the DRC grand crus have never shown me anything as gripping or (ironically) as distinctive as this. I would love to know how much wine from the big guns is in here.

Characteristic DRC sap and density. Delicate flavors at first - very pretty, with floral and spice notes. Lots of sap and a fine structure. Builds and gains in everything with time - super spicy in a La Tache sort of way. Super expansive. Showing more open than I'd expect, but just delicious.

I wanted to like this wine more, given its rarity and pedigree. It just wasn't giving all that much tonight -- the oak was too prominent, needs several years to integrate. The other DRC's served tonight were excellent with more potential, but this was one that truly NEEDS time. If the oak integrates, this will be extraordinary. As for the showing tonight: B-

A private dinner (Restaurant De Lindenhof **, Giethoorn, Netherlands): Needs a lot of time in the decanter and in the glass. Very light colour; new oak and crisp Pinot fruit, still very closed, acidity seems quite high, exotic spices, iron minerality, very tannic, will turn out very well with time.

Blind Horizontal Tasting of 2002 Red Burgundy (Thyme - Chicago IL): Blind horizontal tasting of 2002 Burgundy. Violet and acacia on the nose. Great fruit, amazing depth and balance for some a young wine. I would have guessed this was older than 2002 from its balance, but I also was fairly certain it was the DRC (which I brought) based on aromatics (unless somebody snuck in a Leroy). Amazing finish has great texture. This should pick up some weight over the next year, then be a great drink for a decade++. My first time with the DRC 1er.

2002 Red Burgudy Tasting (Thyme - Chicago): Group Ranking 92 points and would have been groups' WOTN without my score dragging down the results. Excluding my score range was in a tight 90-94 band with four of eight giving 94 poiints. Below are my notes with group comments too. I suspected at the time, and continue to believe, my stem was not clean.
Nose: Tight with elements of dill and bird seeds Palate: Dry and tart with herbal green tea quality some red fruit components buried underneath tons of minerals. Hard wine and seemingly shut down.
Group notes: Acacia flowers, very floral nose with well defined layers of complex fruit completely balanced by perfectly integrated acidity. Toasty, richly concentrated with many nuances.
I tried Jody's pour and I clearly had a different wine in my glass. I still do not understand what happend.

2002 DRC : Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru ( bottle No. 06352 / 13028 )
This wine is great for a few good friends.
Drink 2012 - 2025...........................92-93++/100............................
ps. Better feeling than drinking DRC Richebourg 2001.......Oops........Did I write my TN ?

Burgundy Dinner at Wyncroft Winery (Buchanon MI): Bright red fruit aromas with great spice. Slightly firm red cherry and black cherry on palate, lightening up toward long finish, which really highlights baking spice.

Young but pure elegance...The quality is there with dominate minerality and spice with some plum and black and red cherries. Excellent finish but still needs time.

Similar impression to a bottle tasted on release. Really pretty young DRC nose with high pitched floral, red fruit, and sweet sappy notes. Really wrapped up palate - hard, compact, tannic profile. Great raw components, but needs years.

Open knit with good complexity. Grated ginger, spice and red currents on the nose. Gently oaky in the mouth with good fat and density.

Medium-garnet colour. Pretty nose of strawberry, currant, red plums, cinnamon. Medium-bodied, a bit of stemminess, but great replays from nose. Moderate-long finish; lovely wine. Will obviously get better with more age.

Nose: Tight with elements of dill and bird seeds
Palate: Dry and tart with herbal green tea quality some red fruit components buried underneath tons of minerals.
