Wonderfully aromatic. Deep dark garnet nearly black in the glass. Flavors of dark berries, blackberries and dark cherry. Minerality and lead core. Tannins are soft, rounded, and integrated. Velour-like in feel. Acidity is fresh and lively. Wonderful wine. Fantastic even still.

With seemingly every bottle I drink, I learn just how much I need to learn. A bottle 13 months ago displayed virtually no tannins, so I assumed it was past its peak. A bottle I had 11 months ago was so tannic it was hard to drink (thank God for aerators). My third and final bottle, with only about 30 minutes of air, was perfectly balanced (go figure). Dark, inky color. Cassis on the nose. Black fruits on the palate. Medium to full body, plush texture, and a very good finish. I'd comment on its life expectancy, but I'm obviously unqualified to do so.

Still very dark red color. Needed about 45 minute decant to open up. Drinking well, little to no tannin. Long finish, deep rich wine. Outstanding. Last one in cellar.

90 minute decant. Deep garnet with a translucent rim. Big nose of cherry, raspberry, raisin, nail polish and alcohol. Flavors are similar but more sour cherry, cranberry and oak and with pretty high acidity. Medium tannins. Has some effervescent feel to it. Medium plus body. Pretty good but no “wow” factor. About 91.

Unlike a bottle just a few months ago, this one did not lack tannic structure. In fact, it was a little TOO tannic to enjoy without fatty food, even 2 or 3 hours after opening. Textbook Napa cabernet characteristics, accompanied by some mountain-grown, wild-n-wooliness. Great nose (cassis, etc.), medium body, and a solid finish. Assuming the previous bottle was atypical, this probably won't peak until 2020.

Opened 90 minutes before tasting. No detailed notes, except to say it was a textbook Napa cab, it was very tasty, and it's definitely ready to drink. In fact, the surprising lack of tannic structure suggests that it's time to drink up.

Decanted over three hours. Initail nose was overwhelmed by alcohol, so chilled it back to about 60 degrees. The nose showed much more blackberry and cassis once it cooled off. Over dinner and afterwards it tasted of blackberries, currant and raspberry compote with squeeze of orange followed by a bitter rind on the finish. There was a nice Vanilla wrapper around all of this that showed itself more over time. Very good wine, can go for many more years but in s lovely phase right now.

This seems to be in a dumb phase right now. I decanted and served and it seemed very muted and diluted. After 90 minutes some more concentration came forward but not what I would expect from Howell Mountain fruit in a great vintage. Will try again down the road.

From a magnum. I thought for sure a hard decant would be required to wake this youth up, but it was open for business immediately, and showed little evolution through the meal, save for a temperature related aspect noted below. Nose of cassis and black fruit, with some evident alcohol. Rich, layered palate, with more red and black fruit and a touch of mocha. Fine complement to a steak dinner. Clean fruit driven in the beginning, when the wine was close to cellar temperature, but as it warmed, the oak became much more overt. Recommend serving at no warmer than 60°.

Dusty dry. Almost a Rutherford type of dust to this wine. Beautiful dark fruit comes across, but mostly after the wine was opened for 2 hours. The powdery dust of the wine went amazingly well with a Lindt & Sprungli 75% cocoa chocolate.

Totally mesmerized by this wine. Thought it was incredible a year+ ago, it is stunning today. Velvety smooth, rich, mouth coating, dark berry fruit, strong cassis and firm tannins. Bought at the winery in 2011, going back this weekend, hope they have a few bottles hidden away that I can talk them out of. And this is a screw cap.

Decanted for an hour and consumed over the next 48. Large amount of very fine sediment. This is the last bottle out of my cellar. I was very impressed with this wine, hitting its stride right now. Delicious Howell mountain fruits with just the right aromatics, chewy tannins, smoked meat, tar, bacon fat perhaps. I'm going to wish I had more. The best of the Cade HM's I've tasted.

PnP Opened up and plateaued with just a few minutes of air. Ripe, rich black cherry, boysenberry, chocolate and baking spices. Some heat, but it dissipates with time in the glass. Full-bodied and long. Some tannins left, but this is so open and expressive now that I wouldn't sit on 'em. A solid bottle from a great vintage.

We decanted the wine for one hour before we poured the first glass. It was opaque dark ruby in colour and threw some sediment. The wine offered black currant, blackberry, cherry reduction, plum, candies, fruit cake, bell pepper, chocolate, spices, creamy vanilla, tobacco and cigar box on sweet nose. On the palate the wine showed black currant, cherry, blackberry, blueberry, fruit cake, dark chocolate, coffee, cocoa, vanilla, cinnamon, pepper and clove, paired with medium-level acidity, medium-plus firm, well-integrated tannin, a creamy mouthfeel and very good length. The oak was well-integrated. A full-bodied, tight, dense, concentrated, powerful Cabernet. I would recommend decanting for at least one hour. Start drinking from 2014.

This was a screw cap version and it is drinking absolutely perfectly with no need for a decant. It has just enough punch to be interesting and completely smooth & creamy. I have a couple more bottles and can see it holding up for a while but not convinced it will get much better than right now. Great dark berry fruit and all the other wonderful mountain cab traits medium leather tannins. Definitely in love right now

The wine was very dark ruby in colour and threw some sediment. It benefited from decanting and kept improving as time passed. The wine offered black currant, blueberry, blackberry, red currant, raspberry, herbs, spices, clove, cinnamon, chocolate, mocha and cedar on the nose. On the palate the full-bodied wine showed black currant, dark cherry, blackberry, herbs, spices, dark chocolate, mocha, coffee and creamy vanilla, paired with medium to medium-plus acidity, medium-plus fine tannin, a great, creamy mouthfeel and very good length. This Cab had a lot of restrained power which it released slowly and only partially as time passed. At the same time the wine got creamier and creamier from sip to sip. An impressive, dense, packed, powerful, well-made Napa Cab that will potentially be even better in two years. I liked it a lot and my wife downright loved it. I would start drinking in 2014 and recommend decanting for 1.5 hours. 91+

More of a muted nose with blueberry & blackberry finally coming through. Complex well rounded. Nicely integrated tannins. Smooth acidity with a nice fulfilling finish. Tannins are integrated nicely & the end result is a big napa cab that should be cellared another 5-10 yrs. Long elegant finish that makes me smile when I know I have more cellared.

A very good wine. Dark fruit in color with a nose of dark berries and cherries. Palate has dark berries and a little earthy with some spice. Not overly fruity but that is fine with me. Will hold but if you want to drink now do so but decant a few hours. Very nice Howell Mtn. Cab.

Drank for one year anniversary. Really a beautiful nose with blackberry, currant, and subtle spice. All mountain cab on the palate with a creamy textured mouthfeel and lingering black fruit on the finish. Tannin structure is still very evident, but adds to the whole experience.

Solid mountain cab, black fruit dominant on the front, full bodied, midpalate was dominated by earth notes, tobacco, cedar, finish was solid with hints of licorice. Low 90s, good structure to improve with a few more years. -S

This wine was a bit...interesting. OK. No note of cork since this wine is screwcapped with a Stelvin closure. A bit interesting since the wine has absolutely no way to evolve and age. The QPR on this wine is a bit higher than I was expecting. The wine itself had a wonderful jammy aroma upon initial open. It was passed through a vinturi into a decanter. There was actually some sediment on the bottle neck. Sat for an hour. The nose after sitting for 1 hr showed, surprisingly, very similarly to a wine that has aged for 10 years. Almost seemed to have the "Franc funk" that an aged Bordeaux would have, but a longer smell gave way to a nice complex fruit aroma with blackberry, plum, fig. The initial taste was fruity, very fruity, with not much licorice, spice, oak, tannic structure, or anything. However, another 30 minutes of air and when combined with a spicy meat dish, the pepper started exploding, licorice started dancing into the equation, some chocolate presented in the mid-palate, sliding back to a nice, velvety but oaky finish. Tannic structure made you want to take another sip, and the wine was very inviting. I can't really say that this wine is "young" because without the cork, it won't improve anymore in the bottle. I can't say that I agree with those saying that this one will improve "with more time in the bottle" with it basically being frozen in time with the Stelvin screwcap. So drink now because in the next couple of years this one will probably be done.

consistent with other notes. Great fruit, wonderful viscosity. Still a tad young - 12-24 more months should smooth this out. Better on the second night. Bottle was a gift and i randomly opened it due to screw cap. $60 bottle of Cab shouldn't have a screw top.

pretty, easy drinking modern style Cali Cab. Not so much the Howell Mtn bruiser, built for age style I love in Dunn, Neal, etc. but was good for sharing with a group with not much opening up needed (esp considering it was a magnum). Factoring the cost, my $$$ can be better spent elsewhere

Dark garnet to perhaps purple color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of soapstone, rose petals, white pepper, a hint of leather, mixed dark fruits a a bit of dark chocolate. Flavors of rich berries, black currants, black cherries, black raspberries and a bit of plum. Medium acidity, firm tannins, full bodied. Drink now with at least a couple of hours of air or into the 3-10+/- year range.

great flavor profile of fresh fruit core of cabernet, bright and lively, full and complete without earthy or woody tones. A little simple, no layers of flavors, it is the brilliance of the fruit, and the fact that the fruit core is solid and lasting, that carries this wine and makes it very enjoyable.

Impressive wine with layers of flavor. Impressive from its balance of firm masculine tannins but maintaining a certain amount of elegance with integrated fruit. Aromas of blackberry and blueberry with flavors of minerality, scorched earth and more dark fruits with a persistent but not abrassive finish. Very balanced right now but needs atleast 5 years in bottle before it shows its true colors.

Specific notes lost due to iPhone issue; from memory, a very pretty wine. Displayed floral notes on the nose that reminded me of why I like Howell Mountain cabs so much. If I recall correctly, the palate disappointed a bit compared to the nose - had nice sweet fruit but I had been hoping for some more complexity. Very tasty cab nonetheless, a definite step up from the Howell Mountain bottling but whether it's worth the additional cost is purely a personal thing. Would be very interested to taste this at a later point of maturity.

Decanted for :90. Fruit forward. Some tanins still present. Not quite as fully integrated as expected. hard to say if it will get any better.

Very nice Cab that is not over extracted. Fruit (dark berries, cherries, plum), structure, and finish are nicely balanced. 2.5hr decant then consumed over 3 hours. Well done.

Inky in color. Upon opening, berries and hints of cassis open on the front end followed by a long dry finish. It could improve with another year in the cellar.

Sunday, June 19, 2011 - Tasted at the winery. Rich powerful nose of black cherry and dark plum. Great balance on the palate and very approachable. Classic Cab cassis with toasty oak on the finish. Pourer said bottle was decanted then in the fridge overnight.

consistent with other notes.

CADE Winery Tasting (CADE Winery, outside Angwin, CA): WIML92-93?
Tasted non blind at the winery.

California Night (Binny's South Loop - Chicago, IL): Another highlight of the evening this licorice driven monster took over the palate with blueberries, charcoal, big robust, earthy, coffee.
Blackberries, soy and balsamic flavors coupled with lots of oak. A good one.

great flavor profile of fresh fruit core of cabernet, bright and lively, full and complete without earthy or woody tones.
