Bought 10 years ago ex-domaine after a domaine visit. The back-label has a QR code on it. Allowed 2 hours of air in bottle. Intense plum and cherries in the muscalar aroma. Good structure and fruits. Very balanced and fine in an hour upon serving. A good Musigny.

Is this the best burgundy I have ever had? Served blind. The nose hits you. So much intensity, even though cold. The perfume. The flowers. It's incredible. The palate then follows. It seems fresher. Clearly well stored. The intensity of fruit is there. Its all red. Lots of strawberry and raspberry. This is just stunning. The nose gets better and better. After an hour, it's even better. Tutti Frutti and bubble gum. How is this possible? Does burgundy get better than this? I struggle to see how. From TL.

1996 Burgundy Retrospective - The Second Session (Eddie V's - Tysons Corner, VA): Expressive nose displaying pure red and black fruit, raspberry, black berry, black cherry, rose, dark spices and limestone. Excellent concentration, very finely layered pure red and black fruit, silky and polished, bright acidity and mineral, and a long pure black fruit driven finish. The most classic Musing y of the night. It remains very youthful and can improve for another decade or more.

A Mix of Heavy Hitters (Corner Table, Mpls): This had been slow-oxed overnight. The nose showed a bit better than the palate. It was earthy with orange peel, dust, sous bois and baked cherry. The palate is not entirely right, baked cherry, iron and heavy miinerality, wood and its rather angular. For whatever reasons, this just wasn't what we'd hoped for. Maybe 88 points as it was, but presumed to be not representative. Too bad, I was excited to try this one.

Very elegant and finessed wine. The nose was mesmerizing, fresh cut flowers, a little forest floor, so much going on. The palate was a little lacking for this level of wine though. Much better on the nose than on the palate. The wine just didn't have the depth and felt a little hollow on the midpalate for a Musigny. Finish was very good, expansive and lingered in your mouth. A beautiful wine that I would love to drink any chance that I get, but it is just a good Musigny, and not a great one.

Funny this. A bit simple, which was surprising. A great vintage, and good wine. No issues specifically, but just an ordinary decent burg. Maybe 89 points.

Had it at blind tasting and thought the wine was from 80's. I don't know, Keith if the greatness in the future of this one, I was less impressed than you were. My impression, BEFORE I saw the label was: Good, very good, but far from greatness.

Destined to become an awesome Musigny and it's already halfway there. It is almost impossible to peel oneself away from the aroma of this thing, which virtually seems to billow out of the glass and combines sweet fragrances with other things darker and deeper. It's not as evolved to taste as it is to smell, with its structure cutting into the fruit, but still shows the finesse of Musigny, and the structure isn't nearly as punishing as the '96 vintage has been for as long as I can remember. This is already great to drink today.

Lots of Burgundy and a few Rieslings at Apiary (Apiary, NYC): Absolutely mindblowing nose. I could have sat and smelled this through the evening (and I think I spent the better part of an hour doing that), with scents of leather, perfume, spicy red fruits and forestal underbrush notes. In the mouth it's all silken elegance and finesse - flavour without weight, with gentle red fruits, earth, leather and mushrooms lifted by good acidity with silky tannins underneath and a finish that stays around a good while. Wow!

Still lively, with strawberry and raspberry fruit; soft, elegant and quite long. Starting to show signs of maturity on the finish, but the acidity should keep it fresh and it still has some way to go. I recall that Clive Coates gave this 20 out of 20 a few years after the vintage (= RP 100) but, fine though it is, it is not that good (earlier bottles likewise).

Burgs w/ Burgundy Bob & The Boys (Bob Macdonald's House, Minneapolis): Brilliant ruby color with very slight bricking. Perfumed, high-toned nose of sweet, earthy cherry fruit. On the palate this is lacy, silky, supple, and sneakily intense, with complex earthy and floral secondary flavors that surround a gorgeous core of pure red fruit. A wonderful expression of this terroir. Fantastic.

Burgs and Bordeaux at Brad's: Popped and poured. Served blind. Steve guessed Musigny. Chris guessed 1996. I agreed immediately on the year. This is still extremely youthful, but has enough age to be mildly expressive. My notes are sketchy at this point, but I got dark cherry and mushroom on the nose. In the mouth this is dense and concentrated with dark fruit, good balance, and a great finish. Just a notch below the 1996 Mugnier Musigny to me -- although serving this at the end of the night with no decanting probably didn't help.

Tasting Group Dinner - Burgs & Bords (Brad's House, Minneapolis): Tasted blind; I guessed Musigny. Complex high-toned red fruits on the nose. Intense, rich, lush palate of red fruits, baking spices, and minerals, balanced beautifully by fresh acidity. Savory tobacco/earth flavors on the midpalate. Velvety and smooth. Great focus and purity. Still young. Awesome stuff! Co-WOTN for me.

La Paulée de San Francisco - Gala Dinner (The Fairmont - San Francisco CA): Late Paulee tasting, brief note. Red fruit, powerful. Still firmly structured. Expanding finish. Lots of upside. I also tasted the 1999 vintage, but it was the final pour/sip so not representative.

Much lighter style then the other bottles of the evening. Puts it at a disadvantage. I happen to like the feminine style of the wine.

Birthday dinner @ Piccolo. This was delicious, but a touch tarter and more narrowly framed than previous showings, from different sources (see TN).
