Couldn't put it any better than the reviews below. This was open for business last night, just a complete and perfectly-integrated wine, with no singular characteristic stepping out in front of the others. Aromas and the palate danced from one element to another seamlessly, from fruit, to terroir, bits of game and animal, to mineral. An absolutely stunning and haunting wine. If you're going to serve with food, keep it simple. Roast chicken and potatoes. Let this wine sing because it will.

Once again, the fresh cellar + 1999 combo bought at the domain struck again.
Very complex nose, restrained. It first made me think of a beautiful Piedmontese Nebbiolo, with spice and dried flowers, a pinch of herbs and earthy aromas on a background of black fruits.
Note that the wine was linear from its opening to the end of the bottle, no notable evolution. The set is still very young as often with a well preserved 1999!
In the mouth, it's simple: it's a symphony. It starts with the touch, enveloping and silky, the juice first coats the mouth to allow the wine to hatch with serenity. The texture of the wine is breathtaking, it is classy and racy, in a word: a lord. Then there is the depth of the wine, with delicate earthy aromas, coffee, a still juicy fruit, these subtle spices then an animal side in all finesse and elegance. And then there is the balance: the wine sings, more delicate than the Clos Saint Jacques from the same vintage, it imposes itself by an extraordinary presence, with a diaphanous tension. The finish is grandiose, always this powdery texture oscillating between dried flower and sweet spices, fantastic length that stretches endlessly...
Great Burgundy, a noble wine. 1999 evolves very slowly!

Paired against ‘01 DRC La Tache and ‘17 Forey Vosne Gaudichots. This was unsurprisingly youthful given the strength of the ‘99 vintage and felt like it wasn’t quite at its peak. Beautiful game and mushroom nose. Palate a little firm, dark morelo cherry, dark chocolate, cardamon, super long finish. We marginally preferred the ‘01 La Tache but splitting hairs here. 98 pts

A fairly deep, mature colour; an intense, penetrating bouquet mirrored on the palate, with mature red fruit flavours and exceptional balance; complex, profound and exceptionally long. This was my second bottle of two bought en primeur and it seemed much fuller than the first, drunk 4 years ago. Either the wine has improved or there is significant variation between bottles.

Absolutely delicious - quite forthcoming from the offset. The spiciness on the nose had us thinking Nebbiolo before we tasted it. Extremely elegant wine. Difficult to see it getting better, but no signs of it being tired either. Will probably be at this pleateu for years if not decades to come. Stunning wine. PS: the cork was unbelievably fresh.

This might be my favorite burg. Amazing on the open, found its moment 15 minutes in. Do not decant, moves fast. Soft, supple, big. Long finish. The type of silky goodness that makes your cheeks grin. This is stellar all around.

Rousseau Chambertin is near the apogee of red wine for me and I am always excited to taste it. This wine was a very pretty example of the lighter style of this wine, which might be surprising in the otherwise big 99 vintage. Definitely lighter than either the 90. 01, or 93 with very pretty strawberry notes and subtle earth tones. This was both light-medium in texture but with nice complexity if you pay attention. I actually prefer this wine when it is slightly bigger and more powerful but would never turn my nose at this vintage. Probably best on its own where it can be focused on, rather than in a big lineup of grand crus.

maybe even better than the bottle from 6 months ago, we had this next to the 99 Beze, and after a brilliant combo of 90/91 Beze, and for my taste this was WOTN along with the 90 Beze. It's really starting to show off what it's got, and yet feels like there could be more in reserve. Perhaps more complexity to be gained with aging....i don't know, just that this is remarkable wine, and as I said in a different TN I think Rousseau is making some of the best red burgs out there

Extraordinary. Echoing kr522's note on the same bottle, while pretty much perfect today this is still on the ascent and feels like it will have an almost limitless ability to age. A clear step above the excellent '99 Beze beside it. Benchmark Rousseau. 99+

Snuck in at the end of a big ’99 horizontal and in many ways stole the show and was the favourite wine of the night for several. The nose on this has such distinctive earth influence, soil, and spice all wrapped up in sweet red cherry in a light effortless delivery that still packs power and density. Distinct Gevrey and Chambertin rusticity and darker spice. Texturally distinct too. Overall clean and pure, focused, but with a soulful and authentic earth aspect just off in the background. Amazing from every aspect. Detailed and highly expressive aromatics, delicious and complex palate that is absolutely brilliant right now but which shows no signs of slowing down. Very impressive. A big thank you to Captain Coche for taking this down and getting it in the mix. Near perfection tonight.

Rousseau Chambertin v Rousseau Clos de Beze vertical battle - WHO WILL REIGN SUPREME!? (Jonathan Club): warm vanilla and spice, rhubarb, cherry tart on the nose. High acid- more square and needs some time initially but by the end of the night there’s intense cherry on the palate - sappy deep red fruit that lingers for a long while that comes from a balanced elegance on the mid palate. Really fine detailed wine, my second wotn

gorgeous wine, first time i've tried it so i can't comment on its evolution, but it’s very well put together and not showing any rough edges from this vintage. drank next to a brilliant 90 CSJ, which i ever so slightly preferred as it was more evolved, but this was just as good and seemingly still on the way up. 98-99

Muscular, dense and virile Chambertin. A Burgundy of tension and bracing energy that is transcendental and deeply beautiful. It is fantastically complex and expressive in the glass showing sweet and richly textured fruits, scorched earth and exotic spice on the minéralité finish. An imposing Burgundy that captivates and penetrates the soul. WOTN!

A dark brooding beast of a Chambertin, and yet elegant simultaneously. Beauty and the beast. Popped and poured, did my best to follow along but there were so many glorious wines tonight. In the end, this was backward, evolving glacially. Other wines raced past it, but any other night given the attention it deserves this would be a revelation.

God wine. Drinking beautifully and in a prime drinking window I think. Tannins are basically gone. Flavors and aromas are decidedly in secondary territory. Aromatically effusive and complex. Super smooth and elegant on the palate. Captivating. Kinda regret selling my other bottle of this even if I did clear something like 10x for it. Oh well.

Jasper Rousseau Chambertin. Deep cherry richness, even aromatically. Some secondary floral notes unlike later vintages but also certain harshness. Crazily intense palate with minute plus finish. Not quite the life of 2005 on palate, but very fine.

Opened this a good 1 to 1.5hours . Tight at first dare say austere but great structure. With more time the wine started to show its finesse and complexity. Lots of red and dark berries with great balance.I find the 99 beze in a much more approachable place in comparison to this. The depth and length of the last sip was incredible. I plan to wait a bit longer to open my next one but will gladly drink when its offered.95/96

A mature colour, brick/garnet; quite a perfumed nose; attractive, mature Pinot flavours on the palate, perhaps a bit restrained towards the middle, but quite long on the finish. Certainly a fine wine, but not a special one and therefore a little disappointing given its reputation and price, currently retailing at an absurd figure of around £2,100 a bottle. My allocation in 2001 was 2 bottles (£67.30 each), and I will leave the other for a couple of years in the hope that it will develop further. At the moment, the 2001 is better.

Surprisingly open. The nose and aromatics is soaring with a gorgeous floral perfume. So much so I had to recheck my hands to make sure there wasn't any residual perfume from soap or lotion. The fruit is so clean and pure. A little bit darker vs the 90. A hint of cinnamon spice. Finish is very long with the beginnings of a savory note developing. By hour 2 it is an absolute stunner with tete de cochon. The palate really rounds out and acquires a silky texture. Superb.

Saturday lunch with Eddie (Masseria, DC): Expressive nose displaying ripe black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, black cherry a hint of raspberry, mocha, rose, dark spices, liquid smoke and earth. Excellent concentration, packed blackberry and black cherry, chewy yet silky and polished, bright acidity, noticeable but sweet tannins and a long deeply toned roasted black fruit and mocha driven finish. It remains very youthful and structured. Needs another decade or more to reach the youthful peak.

Everything you want in a bottle of burgundy. While 99's can frequently show young, this was rich, deep, luscious. I'd have no hesitation opening up more of these as its ready to drink.
Wow. What wine can follow '61 Latour? Well this does a pretty good job. Black cherries, strawberry and warm earth. Perfect depth and balance. Five more years will put this in the sweet spot. What a night for wine! Great wines don’t always show this well – we got lucky tonight. (97)

1999 Grand Cru Dinner. Deep cherry colour. This wine opened with a rich nose of black and red cherries, game and allspice with touches of rose and forest floor. The palate was quite dense and muscular with plenty of fruit, game and spice leading to a very fine and structured tannin finish. A terrific wine with years ahead of it but in good shape now.

Near perfect. Beautiful compilation of rich, dark berries, luminescent deep garnet color, refined but powerful life force in its tightly focused bouquet with earthy, clove like undertones. Displays a powerful but seamlessly integrated tannic structure. Its profound but elegantly restrained aromatic complexity is yet to fully reveal itself. Velvet on the palate with a persistent and memorable finish. This majestic wine overshadowed the otherwise delightful 88 Chambertin tasted at the same time which seemed more ashy in its nose and a little flaccid by comparison.

A redder and more open bottle than others I have had. A lot of raspberry and marionberry, warm roasted sweet spice, and soil tones. Granular textural palate likely attributable to transport. Otherwise fairly smooth on the palate. Much more open and softer than the Beze. Intense spice notes should mellow to yield more floral alongside with time. A more advanced bottles than others I have had. 96+

Great Dinner Wines (Healesville Victoria): I was lucky enough to try this ten years ago and at the time I thought great wine but will it ever evolve into the stunning Chambertin wines I had seen previously? In its youth it had all the silk and composure of a great wine but gave absolutely no indicator of the greatness it would one day express as it did tonight. Yes it was Grand cru pedigree but that majestic aroma of Chambertin was not present, not even a tiny bit. In short when I first tried this wine ten years ago it did not in any way resemble the wine we had tonight. I realise now with experience tasting the wines from this region what a waste it was to open this ten years earlier. This vineyard and the Clos de Beze from Rousseau have produced the most electrifying wine experiences I've ever had in my life. This 99 is the absolute top of the tree. I have only scored a few 100 pointers but I can not express how profound this wine was to me and a unanimous favourite around the table. A perfume so perfect and a palate to match. Extraordinary length. On this showing I would say perfect maturity. My only suggestion is you try it now before you die and the 99 La Tache but you'll need to wait another twenty years for that wine to show its best. Incredible. Check out my original note ten years ago on this wine. I had no idea!

Fortunatamente a berlo eravamo solo in 2......

Same bottle as Chablis28. I never wrote a note on this, but after a great 2001 Rousseau Chambertin earlier this week, I thought I should at least document the '99s greatness. This bottle was pure pleasure, and showing much better than my previous tasting in 2009. Soaring nose, lithe and elegant on the palate and packed with flavor. I thought this was every bit as good as the '99 La Tache which is one of my favorites of all time. I suspect I'll never get to try this again, but well stored bottles should drink well for many, many years.

PnP Youthfull but a great showing.Medium crimson color. Fresh floral nose. Regretably, not autumnal yet. Something to hope for with more age. Shows just how ethereal and classy Burgundy can be and why its my favorite region and why Rousseau is my favorite producer. Deceptively powerful and palate staining and yet so sophisticated! Sees a fair amount of new oak in the cellar but, absolutely no overt signs of it now. Perfect expression of PN. Bravo! Now, I'll wait at last 3yrs to open my last '99 and longer if, I have the will power. Sadly, I can no longer afford to buy these wines but, I have one more 99, some 05s, 06s and 07s that I fully intend to drink when ready. Regardless of market value my remaining Rousseaus will never see the auction while I can still enjoy great wine.

Overraskende fersk. Lette, men tørre tanniner. Lang, sursøt og mineralsk avslutning. Aldeles nydelig, men vent 5 år med denne. Minst. (94-96P)

It is near perfect wine for mine with it's ethereal perfume of musk, smoked meats and red and black fruits. It is creamy and round in the mouth with fruits that morph from pomegranate and raspberry to dark cherry and blood plum. Wow!! One of my more memorable wine impressions. Soaring and penetrating nose of dark berries, herbs, baking spices. The palate impression is huge..., there is huge Pinot extract and sap. Mouthcoating and cascading flavors of sweet-tart black cherry liquor, wet leaves, baking spices, toasted nuts and minerals. The finish is long and there is good acidity to provide a balanced framework to the wine. Clearly drunk young.., more fireworks will emerge after 5+ years.

Double decanted. Powerful, dense nose of focussed dark fruits with a real purity of black cherry backed by an earthy spice and dark minerality. Formidable concentration but still very tight. Attack is distilled essence of Burgundy. Wonderfully deep, rich and complex - spreads and broadens on the palate before gliding majestically into a long and deep finish. No getting away from it this is a youthful stunner. The balance is impeccable and provides a virtuoso framework for all that layered complexity. Really needs another 10 years but it's hard to say no to this now! 95++

Chef Nita's Tasting Menu (Craig's House): Magnificent, and the textbook definition of a great wine that is totally closed. A kaleidoscope of fresh, pure, dark fruit, fresh herbs, coffee, subtle new oak, smoke, and leafy tobacco. Food and Wine with Craig and Nita -- Wow: Soaring nose featuring a complex and stunning melange of black fruit, earth, cinnamon/spice, mushrooms and more. In the mouth this is surprisingly sweet with black and red fruit mixed with earth and carmel. Delicious. This shows excellent balance and great length on the satisfying finish. I kept thinking of Dujac Clos de la Roche -- based on the aromas and flavors more than the texture -- as I drank this. Showing pretty well now, but should be an absolute stunner in say 10 more years.

A monster freak of Burgundy, a black hole. Hours later, this wine still wasn't giving what it should... but you know it's there. Reminds me of the '05 Bouchard Beze in this respect, thought it's frightening to think it's still quite this backward 9 years out. I sincerely, deeply hope that I will be able to taste this wine again in 10 years. B now, as for the future: use your imagination, then use it some more. Serious, foreboding potential.

Actually thannk them because this was simply gorgeous once it had a few minutes of air.
The set is still very young as often with a well preserved 1999!

maybe even better than the bottle from 6 months ago, we had this next to the 99 Beze, and after a brilliant combo of 90/91 Beze, and for my taste this was WOTN along with the 90 Beze. It's really starting to show off what it's got, and yet feels like there could be more in reserve. Perhaps more complexity to be gained with aging....i don't know, just that this is remarkable wine, and as I said in a different TN I think Rousseau is making some of the best red burgs out there

WOTN!

This bottle was pure pleasure, and showing much better than my previous tasting in 2009. Soaring nose, lithe and elegant on the palate and packed with flavor. I thought this was every bit as good as the '99 La Tache which is one of my favorites of all time.
