  • Very enjoyable Bordeaux. Nose and notes of ripe red fruits, tobacco, graphite, cedar, forest and leather. Not overly fruity or tannic. Very balanced and integrated. Not overly bold and may lack punch with a richly flavored meal. Overall a lovely wine.

  • Excellent. Opened less than an hour before drinking w/out cecanting. Opened over course of dinner - grilled steak. Not sue what perfect would be but by mid meal we were fighting for the remainder of the bottle. Drink up!

  • Very nice mature Pomerol close to, if not at peak. Decanted for 2 hours and back into cleaned bottle. Nose and notes of ripe red fruits, tobacco, graphite, mushroom, leather and forest floor. Medium bodied, with fresh acidity and tannins showing still, this is what I hope for in aged Bordeaux. Perfect with the ribeye. Time left.

  • I don't detect much sign of evolution compared with my memory and TN of almost exactly three years ago but I was less overwhelmed. This may be a function of pairing (guinea fowl in a cream sauce sprinkled with whisky) but I felt the balance was more tilted towards acidity right through the bottle than previously. Otherwise the rest of my description still applies. Very Good.

  • Nice and easy drinking, very representative 20 year old right bank. Nothing super complex or impressive here, but nothing out of place. I loved 1998 on the right bank, so I expected a bit more fruit. This was tasting just slightly past prime, mostly leather and olive and earth. I would drink up.

  • From magnum. Expressive and gorgeous on the nose. Elegant on the palate - good acidity, soft tannins, good fruit, medium intensity, medium complexity, decent length. 89-91

  • On the nose, stone fruit, bitter chocolate, some wet leather, tobacco, brick, pencil lead, violets, and olive. On the palate, this is classically structured and finely detailed. More savory aspects come to the front, olives, some leafiness, more bitter chocolate, pencil lead, more so than the stony fruits that seem to complete the story. There is breadth, but this is not an expansive, palate overwhelming wine. There is lift and freshness to it. There is depth but with focus. It still has the subtle leafiness on the back end. Quite long, very drinkable. It has layers and subtlety that draws you in. Nothing really stands out here, it just seems to all coalesce into a greater whole with and fruit, savory, and soil all coming together effortlessly. The balance is what excels here. An understated, beautiful wine that is not trying too hard to be anything but itself. It drinks like mineral water with a freshness and ease to each sip. At peak and I doubt it will improve, and may start to fade some time in the not distant future. Outstanding tonight. 91

  • So now, this is the reason why I started to drink Bordeaux wines. A Beauregard 2000, and I aas looking forward for this one. Rib-Eye of a pound on grill was the partner. Decidet to open and pour, decant would be possible afterwards. First nose: Fishmarket! WTF? Again: Fishmarket.
Let em breave for 10minutes: wet horse-saddle... well, better, but by far not the smell I was expecting from my previous experience. After 45min: opend up and gave me what Ib2as expecting but not as nice I remember -more on a thirty way. But in the end: an typical bordeaux experience where the taste changed 4 times from the open thebbottle until the end. And now at the end, I ask why it wasnt a magnum as it goes only better....

  • Love the 98 right banks but this is on the downward slide.

  • Right from first sniff on opening, it was clear that this was a winner. Colour was still quite deep and dark. The nose was a superb blend of mature red fruit with balsamic, tobacco and fine mushroom notes, like truffles and ceps. Palate was medium/full bodied with good length, rich but still lively red fruit, velvety texture, some forest floor development, backbone and at first quite marked acidity which integrated better as the wine got more air and warmed a couple of degrees. This is what Pomerol is about. Excellent.

  • CT Seattle Merlot and Merlot blend Tasting (Amoroso Room, Bellevue Wine Storage): Medium garnet in the glass. Leather, tobacco, and blackberry on the nose; seemed unmistakably Bordeaux. Tobacco, black tea, and black fruit in the mouth. Long finish, tannins still noticeable. Thought (incorrectly) that this was young, so way off on that point My second, group's second at CT SEA merlot blend and merlot tasting. Another kudo for '98 Pomerol.

  • Monthly Tuesday group #001: Pomerol (By me): Beautiful and mature bouquet with sweet spices. On the palate dark and red berries, sweet spices, good acidity and tannin with still some bite. Red currant acidity in the finish. Ready now, no real hurry.

  • Excellent wine at its peak right now.
Very expressive nose from the start with likeable leather and barnyard notes, cherry and darker fruit and notes of iodine.
Medium bodied with fine tannins med. plus acidity, depth of flavor, fluid texture and good finish.
One more reminder that regardless how boring the idea of Bordeaux might be, it produces fine wines which show their virtues effortlesly without resort to over-ripeness, over-oaking or anything. Medium bodied, food wines with fantastic aromas and flavor...

  • The bottle was in perfect condition. The wine was dark ruby in colour and threw a notable amount of fine sediment. After an initial decant of about 90 minutes it drank consistently well over a period of two days. On the nose the wine offered dark berries, blackberry, plum, chocolate, cocoa, leather, spices, liquorice and hints of dark flowers. On the palate the wine showed dark fruit, blackberry, plum, chocolate, tobacco and spices, complemented by a vegetal component, with medium-level acidity, firm, medium-level tannin and very good length. The full-bodied, balanced, medium-complex Pomerol was ripe and smooth yet firm and restrained. It drank well at its current stage and I actually liked it quite a lot, but also showed good potential to further improve with additional time in the cellar. Drink (with a generous decant) or hold.

  • From magnum. Very fragrant again, open with fine ripe fruit, spice box, cedar. On the palate also open and smooth, not massively complex but gentle and round with a decent finish. Drink up. 88-90

  • Magnum. Dark garnet in the glass with a nose of cassis, cedar and dark berries. Tannins are still quite robust but well integrated and making for a well balanced finish. This wine is at its best now and holding extremely well for its type, as is the 1997 which I tasted a couple of nights ago. The 1998 should stay there for at least 2 or 3 more years I estimate.

  • Wonderfully smooth Pomerol that is at its drinking apogee. The 1998 right bank wines have a nice quality now, especially with the merlot mellifluous mouth feel. A mid range, never complex but nonetheless winning bottle of clAssic Bordeaux-- wet autumn leaves, red dark berry and old oak, some tobacco and earthiness with a dark garnet color.

  • Pleasant nose. Lots of fruits: strawberry, blackberry, raspberry, cassis, raisin, mint and later some sweet notes like caramel and licorice. Seems to be almost fully mature. At first rather light on the palate and seems to miss the concentration and sunny, sweet juice, so typical of 1998 left banks. After an hour or so, wine starts to fill and gain density and elegance. Good acidity and freshness. At least five years left on this level.

  • “Merlot from a Bordeaux-perspective”-Tasting in June 2014, Flight 2, Wine 2 (blind). The wine was dark garnet in colour and offered blackberry, plum, leather, spices as well as some vegetal and mildly ethereal notes on the nose. On the palate the wine showed blackberry, plum, leather and tobacco, paired with medium-level acidity, smooth, medium-level tannin and very good length. The medium-bodied wine was very round and very balanced, with good complexity, and drank very well. A great wine; one of my favourite wines of this tasting.

  • The bouquet starts out with a greenish/bell pepper tinge that blows off but never really leaves. It decidedly gets better with air though to show more smoky dried cherries, cedar and forest floor. Well perfumed, with aromas leaping out of the glass after half an hour. On the palate, it's nearly completely resolved, there is a slight dryness on the finish. The profile is fairly lean overall with dark chocolate and cocoa powder flavors, some underripe berries give the palate a slightly tart mouthfeel. Not bad but nothing really special. 88-89 pts.

  • Aged Bordeaux (Restaurant St. Jack): Open for business from the get go. Candied maraschino cherries on the nose, then a bit of cool mint. on the palate some oak but mostly well integrated vanilla. A noticeable lack of tannin. Supple and resolved.

  • Older Bordeaux at St. Jack: Fairly voluminous on the nose, showing some extraction and notes of blackberry. Decent texture in the mouth, showing some obliterated soft tannins that offers a certain modern texture and flavor profile. Quite big and very spicy, with these odd, unpleasant tannins. Even bigger on the finish, showing lots of spicy and very large fruit. Some alcohol is noted and it's not showing much in the way of integration. Doesn't come together as a complete package. Would have better been poured among Napa wines.

  • Smells good, notes of cedar, dried herbs and dark fruit. The palate shows good overall balance with enough structure to hold up the dark fruit and herbs that show on the palate. The finish isn't terribly long or short, either way. A friend at the table called this "modern" in style, and I would agree. Either way I find it pretty damn good.

  • Still quite dark. A structured yet forward nose with plums, black olives, dark chocolate and spice. Round, yet well put together and broad but without any heaviness. Supple and texturally beautiful, well balanced and drinking at a lovely peak. Long on the back end with a cool leafy herbal side to the finish that adds to the whole picture. Well done. In a very good place right now.

  • Right Bank Bordeaux 1998 (Amsterdam Wijn Antiquariaat): Doing well between the big brothers on this tasting. Dark colored. Little black berries and sweet spice-cake tones in the nose. Medium to full-bodied. Dark fruits, some coconut and eucalyptus on the palate. Missing some 'fat' compared to the others though.

  • Opens to red and black currants, then adding plum fruit. Good acidity frames the fruit and the mouthfeel at first is a drop tart but eventually smooths out into a silky smooth mouthfeel. Thinner tannin. I was expecting a thick, velvety Pomerol, but this wine was more streamlined and direct. Drops off in intensity by the last glass, some six or seven hours later, although there is good, pure, black cherry fruit through to the finish. Overall, a pleasing wine, nothing too cerebral, but the fruit is tasty. Family BBQ (rain notwithstanding) for the twins' 7th birthday.

  • Decanted for 1 hour prior to drinking. Meaty and pretty heavy on the nose. Threw off a lot of sediment. Very smooth, but with loads of forest floor / pine on the palate. Lots of smooth prune and fig by the mid palate. Some spicy jaminess as well. Relatively dry.

After decanted for 3 hours: strong nose of chocolate with an almost astringent spring-like quality. Chocolate and pine at the front of the palate. Some dark floral tastes, with very muted fruit. Smooth as silk, without any real harshness. Muted, fresh, floral herbs and spices at the very end of the palate with a relatively lengthy finish. Really like it after it's been open for a while. Think it hits well above its price point.

  • Tasted blind. (Group's #2 (my #3)). I guessed that this was a Super Tuscan. I was at least thinking it was Italian. Way wrong. The mid-palate just seemed light to me, and the finish really dropped off. My thought was this was a blend with a significant amount of Sangiovese, and that it had some age on it. At least there was some age on it... Others in the group liked this much more than I did - it's just not my style. Tasted next to 2 other 1998 Cabernets - one from CA and the other from WA.

  • It is a disappointment. Muted nose, soft tannin, oak and coffee with a soft finish. I was expecting much more from a 1998 right bank. There is not much life in it. Drink up.

  • Somewhat disappointing. Decent body & finish. Still has plenty of tannin, but no nose. Possibly shut down. Tannins suggest it could go a few more years (and possibly improve).

  • Last bottle and decanted a good 2= hours. Sweet on the nose but a bit more tannin than I would have expected. Nose had the caramel and vanilla I assoicate w/ Oak. This will go longer than I had anticipated. Very nice with the filet.

  • On decanting this was gorgeous on the nose - loads of earthy, currant, plum and tarry complexity. Faded a little with time, but still good. Complex nose, more earth and brush than cherry and plum fruit. Palate is still pretty sweet, well balanced, though a little dry, tannins are pretty well integrated, dry plum and cherry fruit, with notes of brush, wood and herbs on the finish. Nice long finish, good acidity, went well with food.

This still looked pretty young in colour, but the way it tasted after an hour or so in the decanter I would say drink up.

  • Opened and left in the corner for an hour or 2 before pouring at dinner. I really liked this wine. I got little on the nose but nice soft plum on the palate w/ great structure to balance the soft fruit. Tannin pretty resolved, but this will be fine for years to come.

  • A lot of roasted coffee oak in the nose, some nice subdued plummy black fruit and a little earth, but the upfront whack of oak is a bit too much.
The tannins in this bottle were pretty soft.

  • not decanted, consumed over 3 hours. 1st tasting note of 5 bottles. dark ruby, a little bricking, heavy sediment. fully mature, medium bodied (for pomerol). strong bing cherry nose and candied fruits tea and bit of menthol, big dark cherry finish. firm tannins. slightly alcoholic, nice mouthfeel and acidity. not likely to benefit from further aging.
probably the most memorable bottle tasted of the bunch

  • Earthy, spicey and complex. Needs more time. Nonetheless, an elegant, delicious wine which was loved by the table. Provided a stark contrast to the 04 Oroppas which preceded it. Try again in May 2008.

  • Black coffee and fruit on the engaging nose. Already good balance on the palate, with refreshing acidity, black fruit, coffee and soft tannins. Not yet completely ready but can be enjoyed from now on.

  • Thought this would be good to go at age 8+, but could still use a little time sleeping in my cellar. Nice full bodied Pomerol, with noticeable tannic spine and terrific dark fruit. Medium long finish. Enjoyed with BBQ goat and lamb.

  • Beautiful wine! Licorice and dark fruit on the nose and palate. Jumped back and forth with the '98 Langoa Barton and both were changing into the 8th hour of breathing. Made for a beautiful night! Wine was still very young.

  • (at Bistro b – Baltimore) I find this wine a bit perplexing. The components are there – sweet plum/cherry fruit, medium body and a surprisingly powerful finish. However, everything seems superficial – Like a Bordeaux paint by numbers. No flaws, but it didn’t move me. (13)

  • Drank the first bottle, got better and better with air, this is pretty Bordeaux!

  • On the nose nice black jammy fruit, herbs, liquorice and a slight lactic touch. The palate is still fairly tannic, but also gives a lot of fruit, a still biting acidity, and some impressions of liquorice, herbs and leather. Certainly too young, but beginning to become accessible. The second day this had become softer and fruitier, with subdued tannins but still a noticeable acidity.
