Well stored. It’s got nice ripe dark fruit, showung secondary character, somewhat one dimensional on finish. Good but outclassed by other St Emilion on table

From a well-stored bottle with lower neck fill and excellent cork. Clear garnet, showing the patina of age. Subdued nose, eventually opening to modest aromas of iodine, sage, cedar and autumn leaves. Enough acidity to make it enjoyable but the fruit has mostly sailed. Finishes with some cedar and an astringent finish. No oxidative notes and nothing wrong with the wine apart from being about 5++ years beyond where it would have delivered a more compelling drinking experience.

This is a wine I’ve loved over the years but my last bottle seems consistent with other TNs which say its best days are behind it. Both the nose and palate are turning pruney, gone is that satiny hedonistic chocolate and dark cherry mouthful.
I know there is supposedly bottle variation with this wine, but I’ve drank over a case and never experienced it until now.

This remains marvellous in its idiosyncratic eccentricity. I dont know another wine like this vintage of TRb - apart from a bottle of Belgian bottled Cheval Blanc 47 that I tasted at Sotheby's in 1980 (....seriously...!!) Goes brilliantly with bangers and mash (.....again, seriously: is there a better dish to go with Bordeaux wines - I think not).

After the wonderful 1989, the ‘90 is a disappointment. Color is moderately dark ruby and for a few seconds there’s a splash of bright red fruit. Slightly unbalanced by excess tart acidity, which voild be refreshing if there was adequate density of fruit to buffer it, but there is not. So while seemingly youthful, the fruit is a little dull and unfocused.
Best wine of the summer so far, this beauty was in great shape with a perfect cork. Bouquet of flowers right on the open mixed with cedar, unsmoked cigar, sous bois. Palate was bursting with a wave of blue and red fruit, black tea, caramel. A fully mature Bordeaux in all the best ways, this was a fantastic experience and worth the hefty price tag.

This was a disappointment as it was clearly past its peak despite absolutely perfect provenance and storage.
TN: Herbs, soy sauce but lots of substance. On the palate this shows fresh red fruit, herbs but again soy sauce, broth aromas. The structure is holding up well and without fault but that can’t save the wine.
Decanting: Same picture right after opening and hours later (and after decanting the wine).

Tasted blind. Very ripe and rather raisin-like fruit, smoke, leather and wet earth. This felt a bit tired, unfortunately. The bottle was pristine, purchased en primeur by a private collector and kept under perfect conditions since. Densely packed palate, still plenty of structural, somewhat mouthcoating tannin, maybe a tad too much acidity.

In an unusual pairing with a 2016 Rousseau Charmes, this was more charming, with greater substance and flavor, and the preference of all in the group. Hard to account for age difference, however as I find with Bordeaux and Burgs, this was essentially the same drink on every sip, while the Rousseau was a kaleidoscope of flavors and ever changing….certainly more intellectually stimulating after the first 30 minutes

I’ve never had a bad bottle of this wine. poured to a deep ruby which was lightening around the very edges. Dark cherry, chocolate, and baking spice provided a charming flavor profile which everyone loved. The structure was fully resolved and the fruit has softened slightly, which suggests to me it’s on its final plateau, and what a nice one it is

Beautiful perfumed nose, almost like an aged burgundy with floral notes and red meat, but then drinks like a right bank with a big voluptuous mouthfeel. Layers of dark cherry and raspberry fruit with an intoxicating infusion of spice and leather and a nice long finish, although a bit of green pepper emerges on the back end. Drink now, I don’t think this will improve further with age.

Wow. Now this is back to the form of what I had been expecting from this wine.
Nose: Plum, dark blackberry, truffles for days and a bit of smoke. Fills the glass aromatically with beautiful layers. Palate: Blackberry, cassis and sweet plum with grilled bell pepper, smoked chocolate, and loads of black truffles. Formidable and well built with dark fruit that frames a variety of nuance.
This is a great wine that is going to have a long life in the cellar. Hard to dislike now, but it is so layered it may evolve a very long time. 31 yrs is just the start for this one.

Another superb 90 Tertre Roteboeuf, dazzling with its blackberry, plum, ganache, truffle, chestnut aromatic profile, augmented by fresh ash and cedar on the palate. Deeply resonant, this has so much depth and energy.

Tawny 1/4 inch rim deep garnet middle. Wonderful nose of tertiary properties including tobacco, barnyard and currants. On the palate dark cherry and mocha come to play with some leather. This was a great bottle showing resolved tannins with only hints of acidity on the lengthy finish. Glad I have a couple more.

Well off the pace of prior 750 ml bottles. This 375 had a great approach with dense fruits, damson, plum, cocoa, and truffle. Marred by green notes of capsicum, green tobacco and pyrazine. Palate weight never fully filled out.

Blind, brick rim with deep ruby center. Obvious aged Bordeaux nose compromised of barnyard, tobacco, leather, mocha, undergrowth, ripe deep berries, loaded with silky tannins, full bodied, incredibly rich and thick for its age. Never ending finish, WOW, I must verify my notes but I think this was the greatest red I have tasted this year. This evening, whatever this bottle is was pure perfection. A monster to enjoy by 2040 perhaps longer.

This wine had a deep red center with oranging rims. The medium intensity nose of cherries, smoke, violets, and minerals was attractive.
In the mouth, this wine was medium bodied with rounded tannin and firm acidity. The attractive fruit intensity was somewhat offset by a slight spike of alcohol. It had very nice length.
This wine had classic merlot orient flavors with a hint of clay soil. It seemed in the zone and unlikely to get better.

From an excellent looking bottle with a perfect cork, this wine had a very light red center and amber rims. It was throwing a lot of sediment.
In the mouth, this wine was clearly flawed and tasted like raisins and vinegar.
There were pretty clearly some elevage problems at this property which were not reported by the critics. Some bottles are excellent and others a disaster. If you look through the bottle and see a light color and a lot of sediment, start thinking about your contingency plan....
EXCELLENT. should have written my review earlier. It’s been 2 weeks. But this was somehow jammy and plummy after all these years. First bottle was weak

Here’s an experience that could only happen in the current environment.....i drank half of this 2 months ago, put the rest in a 375ml and tucked it in the fridge. Then we left NYC, and i just came back. 2 months later it’s still rocking. If that doesn’t tell you that a hedonistic wine can be built to last, i don’t know what does. Once again 97 points. Upon opening we thought it was a goner, but after decanting for about 30 mins the nose became much closer to what we expected a wine of its ago to be. We still thought it was a little past its prime, but overall it was still very interesting and enjoyable.

Popped and poured. Reddish brown color. Spicy nose, I’m getting cloves, cedar, rosemary and some dried plum mature elements. Silky, mature palate, fairly lithe with medium weight/viscosity and lifted with a slight tannic bite on the finish. Excellent pairing for a rosemary rack of lamb.

I bought this bottle upon release and it was in great shape. It had a red/purple center and just a hint of orange at the rim. The medium+ intensity nose offered up cherries, red roses, clove, tan spices, and minerals.
In the mouth, this wine was rich and ripe. It had sizable rounded tannin, huge fruit, solid acidity, and great length.
This is a big wine the needs another 10-20 years in the cellar. Alternatively, I suggest decanting at breakfast. As it is still a bit tough, it was performing at a 94 point level. However, I added an extra point because I am so confident that it will at least get to a 95. Is there additional upside?

95 pts

Why don't I drink more right bank? This certainly makes a strong case for doing so with its big Perigord truffle, plum, smoke, mineral, leather, pheasant nose. Just ravishing. Pomerol-like but in no way over-worked. Lithe on the palate, which is a bit of a surprise after such a big nose - but it's so well-poised. 96-97

Nose: Explosive layers of truffles, plum, chocolate and damsons. Notes of toffee, spice and hoisin as the wine opened up. Palate: Just gorgeous on entry with voluptuous curves. Silky plum and caramel notes coat the palate, but it is never cloying or overtly bombastic. Layers of truffles, plum, toffee, espresso and berry liquor are stacked with immense depth. Finish: Chocolate covered plums and cherry compote with a nice coffee and spice element.
This just came in and stole the show at the end of the night and really showed a Pomerol profile. Excellent.

This is the second time I have tried this bottle and I think it is a true gem. Elegant and classic with a restraint and balance that I truly appreciate. This can be paired with a great many types of food and does not demand the steak meal that so much Bordeaux requires. A beautiful wine.

This is my first day on CellarTracker and first public tasting note. I cellared this wine since the mid-90's after purchase from a reputable wine shop. The bottle is in excellent condition as is the cork. Immediately upon opening the wine was alive and surprisingly open, with berries on the nose and mid-palate. The finish is a bit short even after two hours. I have several more cellared bottles and expect this wine can last another two or more years before fading.

A completely wild and different wine. Fill into next. Almost no bricking. Seldom are Cab Franc dominated wines this dark in color. The wine upon opening was a complete beast that dominated your palate such that only the heartiest of cheeses or ribs smothered in sauce could compete. The nose was explosive with spice, flowers and fruit, but tame compared to what hit your palate. A very heavily spiced wine, with ultra dense licorice/cassis and black and red currant. Also tobacco and cedar notes. Hints of blueberries after mid palate, which was already overworked. After a couple hours the wine died down only a fraction but with the notable exception of the finish which started to fade quickly and turn quite thin. I'm not really sure what to make of this wine. It's style is not one I like a great deal, but it certainly get points for being interesting, very well made (for what it is). I've never had a Bordeaux like it before and suspect I won't again.

1989/1990 Right Bank Bordeaux tasting (Vienna Cafe & Wine Bar): Dark and spicy. For most at the tasting, this was preferred to the 1989 Tertre Rôteboeuf. Dark fruits, black cherry, sous bois, spice, flowers, and anise rounded out some really nice aromatics. It did start out a bit shy, but opened up very nicely over time. Exotic like the 1989, but with more power and concentration. Firm tannins and medium acidity. A really nice finish with medium length. While not one of the top wines of the evening, this was still an excellent wine that held its own. I would consider giving this wine more time, as it seems that a bit more synthesis needs to occur. There is a serious core of fruit here, so there should no worry with holding this wine for a bit longer.

Dark core, hint of earthy brown. Beautifully fragrant fruitcake, plums, licorice and spice. Sweet and cedary, delicious. Intense, very rich, dark plummy fruit and earthy spice, cedary, fruitcake spice, a massive mouthful of flavour. Silky attack with a long even middle and a powerful finish, big big fine furry tannins. This has the stuffing to go for another 20 years minimum. Crazy good.

Fully mature, it's easy to enjoy the smoky, licorice, black raspberry, earth and stone driven perfume. Soft, silky and smooth on the palate, the wine ends with a sweet, cherry, raspberry and earthy essence. There is no reason to hold this any longer.

another sensational drinking experience with this wine which is one of my personal favorites
it is like drinking wine syrup, and i say that in the most complimentary way. The hedonistic concentration and dimension are on another level.
it doesn't show a hint of slowing down unlike a few other 1990s i've had recently. sits alongside Cheval Blanc and La Mission, each in their own way representing the pinnacle of the vintage (I've not had the 90 Petrus)

I agree with D'Artagnan below - frankly 'etrange', but utterly fascinating. It tastes to me (on this bottle) like a really old Cheval Blanc, but that makes no sense at all given the cepage. Whatever it is is, it is different from any other vintage of TRB that I have ever had. Is this the bottle variation? Nobody ever said that TRB was always predictable....!

Dream tasting (@ Merlet): Beautiful luxurious and mature bouquet with good cassis, exclusive oak and cigar box. Dreamtasting #5 (Restaurant Merlet, Schoorl): (*) Eminent, notable nose, extremely soft, meticulous delineation and unbelievably complex... Sigh... Beef stew, BBQ, cigarbox and luxurious oak are only a few of the description that came into mind (and I was able to describe). On the palate this wine is soft as silk and completely mature, perfect balance, gorgeously clean and bright, medium bodied, long aftertaste which still has a hint of the ruggedness it must have had in spades in the early days. My first encounter with a wine of this producer and I adored it. 18.5-19/20

had this again a week later, and i'd say it was just as sublime: rich, deep and earthy....it's quite hedonistic with enough spice, acidity and tannin to balance out. There's so much depth to the fruit - chocolate & coffee predominated tonight. it was paired terribly with food that was too sweet and spicy, yet it still shined. Would be perfect with duck or lamb.
i highly recommend this

this is such a great wine. i've read talk about bottle variation but i've been fortunate to drink close to a case of this wine over the past 10+ years and never come across a weak example.
the bottle had a fill level into the neck. it was a deep garnet color, the nose is black fruit and spice. In the mouth it's a complex full bodied explosion of plum, fig, licorice, and chocolatey richness. Acidity is low, as one might expect, but the ripeness of the fruit is balanced by the spice.
This is a hedonistic wine that still has a youthful streak and has always been one of the best 1990s....which is strong praise. The other Tertre Roteboeuf i've tried that matches it in quality is the 2000, though I'd rank the 2005 a step below.

First it was very good, then it was excellent and now it is superb. Not as flamboyant as Tertre Rotenoeuf can be, now the superb blend of black and red fruits and cassis blend into a savory whole that seems sweet due to the perfect ripeness of the fruit. There are many excellent wines from this vintage but this is surely one of the very best.

93 pts

It had big and sparkling nose of black fruit (black berries), perfectly ripe one. Chewy and meaty on the palate with striking freshness, balance and caressing aftertaste. Licorice, minerality, truffle, plums, cassis, earth, spice and an elegant note of fresh picked raspberry create a complex fragrance. In the mouth, the feels lush, round and soft to the touch, finishing with chocolate, silky black cherry and spice sensations. This wine is fully mature. Over the past few years, the wine has gained in complexity, but its lost some of its density and power. I'm going to finish my case over the next 3-5 years.

Blind. Decanted 3 hrs. 84;60. Looked quite light and very mature (after seeing that it was a 20 year old Bdx it was actually very dark for what it was). Fantastic looking. Dense and all the way to the rim. Not much of a nose but more fresh than normally a Bdx would be. Initially it was wonderful, fresh and with great aromatics and a very long aftertaste. After an hour it felt dried out, tannic and boring, then again an hour later it got its second wind and got fatter and really delicious again.

This one was a big disappointment. This bottle is usually talked about in the reverential, hushed tones worthy of a legend. Deep, oxblood color with some amber at the rim, and an immense, puddly darkness -- stewed fruit, raisins, rust, and prunes -- that gave the impression of blackberries muddled in a bit of the Titanic's hull. All of this hinted that the previous owner(s) of this bottle did not cellar it properly. That, and as the evening went on, the wine developed a distinctly madeirized quality, suggesting that this bottle was slightly cooked or oxidized and faded fast once it was decanted.

Rich, opulent, concentrated and filled with glycerin. This plummy, raspberry and black cherry wine was slipping and sliding all over my palate. Very sexy juice. My 40th Birthday (Fiamma, NYC): The nose is huge, full, deep and fairly dark...really fantastic. On the palate it does not disappoint. Rich with a sweet core. Very deep with dark coffee notes. There is a long finish with a hint of bitterness. This is a smooth, super silky, sexy wine with a very elegant mouthfeel. It is powerful and big, well structured and warm with some iron tannins, olive and toasted oak. It represents a medium-modern style. It is drinking beautifully and will hold well for a while longer. Uncorked DK tasting: 1989/1990 Bordeaux (Kenneth): Dark red core. This immediately gives itself away as something very modern with its overly sweet nose of butter-fried toffee.

Silky plum and caramel notes coat the palate, but it is never cloying or overtly bombastic. Layers of truffles, plum, toffee, espresso and berry liquor are stacked with immense depth. Finish: Chocolate covered plums and cherry compote with a nice coffee and spice element.

Nobody ever said that TRB was always predictable....!

this is such a great wine. i've read talk about bottle variation but i've been fortunate to drink close to a case of this wine over the past 10+ years and never come across a weak example.
the bottle had a fill level into the neck. it was a deep garnet color, the nose is black fruit and spice.

Dense and all the way to the rim. Not much of a nose but more fresh than normally a Bdx would be. Initially it was wonderful, fresh and with great aromatics and a very long aftertaste.

Potent aromas of jammy, black fruit, raspberry, coffee and earth. Full bodied, rich, thick with a luscious texture. A very distinctive style of wine.

87 Guigal La La's, 90 la Chapelle, 90 Montrose, 89 Palmer, 90 Tertre Rôteboeuf (Montrachet): The nose is wild like a bull. Blood and bitter chocolate as Andy mentions as well as coffee and mocha. This is amazingly original in the nose and palate. I have never had such a pronounced meaty wine. The vineyard in English means, "the hill of the belching beef" and it's easy to see why. It's concentration is wonderful and the wine is layered with succulent flavors. This is as wild as the shirt Squires wore to the Shafer offline.

Pre Auction Wine Tasting w/ lots of Sassicaia (NYC): Terroir driven wine. Cassis, gravel, earth. Complex, with a long finish. Another winner!
