Leather, mint, cherry, rose, , earthy undertones on the nose. Earthy tart cherry palate, med+ finish. Excellent balance. Not the greatest Giacosa but a perfectly satisfying one. In a good place now. After a couple of hours more roses, more fruit, also more tannins and sheer energy in this wine. Showing increased depth, a lot out of a lesser vintage wine.

Now this is a barbaresco built for the long haul, still quite fresh, dare I say maybe too young? But opened over a couple hours in the decanter. Amazing nose of roses and cherry. Power and elegance here.

Pale ruby with a slightly tawny rim. Feels quite restrained on the nose - maybe a bit cold, there’s a bit of red fruit and tar. The palate is still dominated by the tannins, there’s lots of grip and good acidity. Underneath that there’s cherry fruit and a little floral character that appears with time. Good intensity of flavour. Via Coravin.

Pale ruby coloured with a big tarry nose, there’s a touch of alcohol there, some red cherry with time in the glass and maybe a hint of oak. Powerful but fine tannins dominate the palate, well balanced by the acidity and some lovely sour cherry fruits. Feels very well balanced with good intensity and length of flavour. Via Coravin.

Double blind tasting Pale garnet Aromatics medium +. Rose, cherry, tar. No oak Palate has medium body. Tannins high, fine on teeth and gums. Acid medium +. Alcohol medium. Dry and ripe cherry, red flowers. Finish has medium length. Balanced. I really liked the balance of fruit in the mouth compared with the classic aromatics. Tannins have integrated reasonably well, so ready to drink although this has the structure to age further.

Pale ruby/ garnet color Medium plus aromas of red and black cherry with roses/ lilac as well as hint of tar - no notable oak influence Medium bodied with palate of lush fresh and dried cherry with green herbs and tar Medium plus to high tannins - very fine grained and well integrated - medium plus acidity and medium alcohol with nice length driven by the fruit/ tannins and acid - quite well balanced despite the high tannins Its nice to drink a Barbaresco where the fruit/ palate matches the beautiful aromas Would recommend drinking now - obviously the tannins could integrate with time but this fruit on the palate is right on!

Quite a compact nose, there’s cherry, oak and a little floral note that comas over time. Spicy grippy tannins. Initially feels like a little dryness to oak which is quite dominant. Nice sweet red fruit on the mid-palate. Softened with time in the glass - tarry fruit came to fore a bit more. Still feels quite youthful to me. Via Coravin.

Bottle opened several hours prior lunch. Pristine long cork. Pale crimson colour. Initially reduced vinegar but quickly disappear. Then wonderful aromas appear: fleshy, earthy, petals of roses, seafoam, biscuits, first season raspberries ... endless complexity. Good dusty definition and that feminine sense so characteristic of Barbaresco. Silky texture, medium-bodied wine, nice acidity, calm & warm, decent persistance and a lovely bitter aftertaste. According with my taste, definitely time to go ... elegant and no less wonderful fermented juice.

Initially almost Bordeaux like with quite a lot of dark fruit. With time emerging complexity: rosehip, roses, black tea, mint, liquorice. On the palate elegant, not at all as much power as on the nose and at times a bit anemic. Still very tannic towards the finish. Good wine. Not sure where it is heading, I fear the fruit will dry out before the tannins resolve.

Two hour decant, better that the bottle I opened a year or so ago. Lots of tar with a hint of cinnamon cherry on the nose. Fine well integrated tannins, great mouthfeel and long finish. For some of us this was the wotn, beating out the 2007 silver oaks napa cab. I think this is a very nice barbaresco but you are going to pay a really big premium for the giacosa name. 93--94

Has fine tannins, comes off a little earthy and tight to on opening. Each glass does best with 10-15 min air to start showing the lovely cherry fruit with some leather notes. At peak about 2-3 hours in. This is a nice wine at 12 years in, but for me it is worth it for the extra money for the single vineyards which have more polish in the mid-palate and lift in the finish.

Truffle Dinner with Chris, Dom, Phil and Jane (Home): Cork. 14% alc. Decanted 3 hours. Fine sediment. Medium garnet. Attractive aromas - florals, cherry, orange peel, smoky earth. I really wanted to like this. Received as a gift from a colleague, I looked forward to drinking it. While beautiful wine, nicely aged and integrated, the drinking experience was weaker than I had hoped. Full disclosure, I chose the wrong food, but still... Decanted for 30 minutes, drank over the next two hours. Fruit was soft, tannins were super-fine, almost like liquid talcum. Maybe the acids, fruit and alcohol were TOO integrated (if that even makes sense). Lacking clarity, crispness and a vivid taste structure that I expected from this caliber of wine.

Poured thru a venturi then let it sit for an hour. 3 glasses poured and the room soon filled with the cherry, a little spice and a hint of orange peel. The nose was outstanding and for me the best part of this wine. Good finish, nice mouthfeel with the tannins very smooth and well intergrated. All in all a very good wine but, at least for me, it seemed to be lacking the "wow" I thought a wine in this price range should have. Let the bottle sit for 8 hours then finished it but I didn't think it got any better. Don't get me wrong, this was a solid, good wine, but it was my first giacosa and I expected more -- I ended up thinking that except for the absolutely wonderful nose, I have had barbaresco for about half the price of this that I thought were just as good.

Italy 2012 - Piemonte; 7/8/2012-7/14/2012 (La Morra): Drank at Antine in Barbaresco. Nice youthful nebbiolo colour. Dark cherries, dried flowers and other red fruits on the nose at first but as it opened in glass beautiful aromas of tar and rose water came to the forefront.
