  • This wine is drinking beautifully now. Light but so full of flavor. It has shed its green-ess and now with a lot of secondary flavor of earth and tobacco. Almost sits half way between a mature Bordeaux and a mature Burgundy, except lighter. Wonderful with our lamb burgers in a brioche bun and seasoned with Greek herbs and spices. Very pleased. This is the best bottle so far since owning them at release.

  • This wine smelled like pig intestines as another taster commented. I'd agree :) Funky, green bell pepper, sour cherry fruit, lifted with nice acidity. Slightly bitter on the finish. Called Cab Franc from Loire. Not sure i'm a huge fan but definitely very pleasant to drink.

  • Vert et végétal...on reconnait le Cab franc.
Nez sur les poivrons verts et les fruits noirs avec des notes d'écurie.
En bouche, un brin asséchant avec le poivron qui domine. Pas mon style en ce moment.

  • Round and mouth filling. A little funky, maybe a little too funky.

  • seemed a bit hollow/thin on the front palate, then the tannins kick in mid-back palate which feels awkward, ultra light. Not so enjoyable as in the past

  • Had this a while ago. But perfect red/black fruits laced with green pepper and minerals. Baudry is a genius..so reliable.

  • Enjoyed tonight at the recommendation of the sommelier Brian Pack at Del Frisco's Double Eagle in Fort Worth TX. I'm not too sure if this bottle was ready to drink tonight, but it was probably the most unique experience we've had with a bottle of wine. The wine was uncorked to a nice dark cherry stain. 1-2 mm of bleed. Cork intact. Nose out of the bottle was all musty - - Fort Worth Stockyards and, with a long breath in, a cut rose and violet smell. The wine was decanted, and thankfully so! The wine poured a dark red, not much of a glycerine characteristic - probably medium to full bodied offering was the initial postulation. On the palate was a lot of smoke and leather, some chocolate, some dark berry, and a funky, earthy finish and some manure, oak barrel and a firm tart, yet floral semi-sweet note. Rest of the wine was decanted and enjoyed over 90 minutes. This wine really needs about 30 minutes of decanting time. Afterwards, the wine was rather predictable, but went through a few developments to get to its final presentation. This wine was at first musty, then violet/jasmine/rose floral, then a note of blackberry showed, then chocolate moving to oak barrel, then a nice black pepper spice, with a very earthy, gravely finish, then almost seems to repeat 1-2 more times as the wine sticks with your palate for a 10-15 second finish. Each sip seemed to vary somewhat, but never really deviated from the order above. This was by far the most interesting Loire Valley Cab Franc we have ever had. But, it's not one that you can go into blindly. We were warned that this wasn't your typical bottle, but TYPICAL isn't what you look for on a wine list that goes on and on. Went VERY well with the seared rare black and blue. I think you could probably keep this one another 10 years as it already did seem to be rather well integrated, but I feel that the best is yet to come.

  • Upon opening, I decanted 1/3 bottle and tried it: fairly tannic, in a chalky sort of way, with fruit well hidden and a strong note of dark herbaceousness. Drunk straight from the bottle, it showed more red fruit along with some Band-Aid™ and went far better with our leftover steaks. I'd guess that it's best to give this a hefty decant (1+ hours) prior to serving, or PnP. Your choice.

  • Unfortunately, my last bottle. CT showed it being over-the-hill. NOT EVEN CLOSE! Wish I had trusted my gut and waited.

  • Green leaf, green herbs, dusty earth, cherries, and pencil lead. Nice match with baked potatoes loaded with goodies. Medium weight and finish. Basic Franc that hit the spot. Will seek out more from this producer.

  • Very good for the price, rustic not sophisticated but a very good pizza wine. Nice earthy nose.

  • Deep ruby. Nose of dirt, subsoil, dirt, clay, more dirt, with touchs of black currants, black walnut, and deeply buried (under lots of dirt) a bit of raspberry, violets, and green tea leaves. All that would be fine (Go check, I like dirt.), but it's overly compacted on the palate and mouthfeel, and short on the finish. And seven people have had free pour of this, but there is still a quarter bottle left the third night. Ergo, no wow.

  • Tasted with a braised lamb shank. Aromas of blackberry, raspberry and earthy funk but not unpleasant at all. . Ripe black fruit and bramble on the finish. Tannins have some rough edges but mostly round and fine. Should age relatively well. Nice medium long finish. Medium low alcohol at 12.5% Medium High acidity cuts through fat and more. Meats are leaner these days and the Chinon style has evolved to lighter tannins. Cab Franc varietal characteristics in full view here with great structure. Will try again in a year.

  • Dusty (in a good way) and fresh on first opening, green pepper smell as expected, the fruit isn't ripe, somebody said dried cherry and I guess that makes sense. With air it opens up a bit, lots of fresh acids, fairly tart and lean mouthfeel not unpleasant. Later on a bit more tart cranberry, shortish finish but nice. Liked it better than the Grezeaux maybe because of its simpler pleasure at this point.

  • pencil shavings, fruit hard to pin - like mixture of plum, red cherry and a little blackcurrant, precious woods, dandelion leaves, just lovely; supporting acids that don't dominate in any way, tannins are fine and hard to defin and sit at the front of the mouth and a bit too linear and I'd like a little more grip, but they seem to suit the wine well enough, 12.5%, delicious

  • Now in its 3rd day in the bottle. Made worse that I've been congested for the last 3 days. Tight at first. Now more open. Aromas of blackberries, a hint of blueberries, maybe a hint of earth but difficult to tell due to congestion. Tart blackberries, red fruits, bark, and a nice green pepper streak. Nice moderately long finish of fruits, minerality, and green pepper. Moderate tannins. Nicely done even with my congestion.

  • Soft, dusty, earthy nose of dried red fruits, black olive...very dense and floral/perfumey. Lighter in body, yet with concentrated flavors. Soft red cherry flavors, with dried overtones, juicy and persistent with hints of cola. Vibrant energetic underlying acidity. Toasty/earthy finish. (*) A rustic, earthy expression of Cabernet Franc with vibrancy.

  • Small cassis-forest berries; cool, fresh, clean with hints of black cherry and a touch of mushroom and pine notes; mouth of also fresh and clean with tart blackberry and forest floor. Dusty tannins, and lightly earthy, like a cold morning walk in a dewy forest.

  • Aromas of forest floor, wet earth, bell pepper, graphite, herbs and some spicy red fruit. Medium bodied with good juicy acidity and a little tannic grip. Very savory more than fruity on the palate much like the nose. Decent length. Two days later the nose is dominated by milk chocolate and earth and has become a little softer on the palate. Well made and very enjoyable.

  • fairly boring wine if I'm being blunt

  • Too cold and this is all apple cider and winnowed fruit; closer to room temperature it shows some high-toned red fruit and the usual Chinon vegetal notes, etc. I like it ok but am not wowed.

  • No detailed notes this time but the wine showed beautifully.

  • Earthy and vegetal driven nose, with ground black pepper and bell pepper at the forefront. The palate shows the ripeness of the vintage, with a burst of black fruit up front, though turning hollow on the mid palate. Lacks the freshness and acid that I adored in the '08. A hair boring and one dimensional.

  • This bottling is very reliable and always satisfying and the 2009 vintage is no exception. This had plenty of concentration, nice earthy notes and a good finish. Lots of bang for the buck. Wonderfully food friendly.

  • My first Chinon!

Day one, pop and poured. Very thin and acidic, not much to recommend it at all.

Next day it picked up weight and became much more balanced. Not much fruit, but lovely earthiness. Still high acid, not much tannins.

Definitely give it some air if you try it now.

  • Olive, black pepper, capsicum and boysenberry. Medium bodied with light tannin, medium acidity and a nice finish. Fresh, balanced and drinking well now. A bit brawnier and fruitier than in years past but still quintessentially a food wine.

  • Deep red with a purple hue. A spicy aroma, initial impression is a freshness with quite alot of acidity but this gives way to a smooth creamy finish. There is fruit with spicey notes but it is restrained and elegant with the minerality showing through. Overall this is a great food wine and excellent PQR at EUR7.

  • Had it with flank steak. A bit lean right now but still with beautful red fruits, prominent green pepper and a great mineral streak. Went so well with the steak. Need to spend more time with this but really nice.

  • BTG at Bar Boulud. I think this was served a bit too warm. The nose was a bit funky, with lots of earthy/foresty notes and the fruit in the background. On the palate it's a bit angular, with some tart black fruit. Not as good as the domaine Chinon bottling I had a taste of a few days ago.

  • Dark purple color. Smoke, tobacco and hints of pine and raspberry on the nose. Smooth and smokey on the palate with raspberry, sour cherry and orange rind, almost thirst-quenching in aspect. Can work well with a nice spectrum of foods too - tomato-based sauces, meats and spicy dishes. Only being 12.5% alcohol is a another bonus! Drank this bottle over several days and the first day was the best. Enjoying this very much now and looking forward to trying the 'serious' 2009 Chinons in 9-10 years. Very Good.

  • This bottle really brings it. Garnet to the rim. Beautiful thin legs. Vegetal nose of green pepper with black tea, eucalyptus and cloved orange. Rustic, dusty, sexy unripe plum on the palate. Mid-palate pulls out a cranberry note. Balanced acidity with a medium weight mouth feel. Not a terribly long finish but apropos for Cab Franc. Delicious and worthy of the upgrade to the 90 pt level at this time. Will be difficult to allow this much cellar time as it is DELICIOUS!

  • I have loved prior vintages of this wine and there is nothing here that changed that. Nice little nose. Smokey and earthy on the palate. So food friendly. Definitely need to add this.

  • None of the earthiness or pepperiness I often associate with Chinons. None of the bright acidity, either. Juicy red fruit, but balanced. Great with food (we had it with risotto, some cheese-stuffed morels, and a miso-glazed salmon), but not a reflection-inducer or a head-spinner in any way. Fairly priced at 19.

  • Clear medium to dark ruby. Herbs and dark cherry. In the mouth, there is a flash of fruit but this is all pencil shavings and oregano on a light to medium bodied platform. You feel the ripeness of the fruit, but it is hidden far in the background. Excellent acidity and powdery tannins which coat the tongue well after the wine leaves your mouth. Very satisfying, well put together wine without an ounce of fat.

  • Very pretty young wine; previous taster nailed it, this is all black all the time - berries, olives, licorice, etc. accented with notes of fresh cut flowers and crushed rocks. Well balanced and delicious, this is a very promising data point for 2009 Loire reds...

  • this has just arrived and thought it useful to get a view on 2009 in the loire. Very deep colour for a cab franc, on the first night a bit fruity and unstructured though with lovely red fruits, herbs and alick of licorice of all things. Very fresh. On the second night this had firmed up nicely, with much more interest and structure on the palate - quite crunchy so there's enough acid in the ,09s for further cellaring for a couple of years.

  • This has all the classic, lovely aromas I love about Chinon, but although the wine is nicely proportioned, with the acidity and fruit and minerality seemingly in their right places, the palate is strangely muted; it just doesn't have the spark, the informal elegance, or the mid-palate depth that I associate with Baudry's wines. I drank over three days' time in the hopes it would blossom, but it never unfurled (and actually it just turned slightly medicinal by the third night). Curious.

  • sl mirky and j trans deep purple; nose of weediness, some minerals, red fruit, undergrowth; mb, soft acidity - good refreshing finish tho, could be longer but good, agree with Kissack's "dry, minerally, gravelly character" and agree that it's "light and elegant... but there is good tannin". It's not great Chinon I spose, but it is solidly good and enjoyable and only $27!

  • It was a crowd pleaser - everyone liked it when they were drinking it, but it wasn't a memorable wine, even at the price range. Certainly fruity and easy to drink. I was hoping some of the more mineral characteristics would emerge on the second day, but it only got a bit more acidic, not much else changed.

  • Very fruity. Almost some candy to it. Too fruity really. Needs to shed some of the fat so that the non-fruit characteristics can show. Hoping this shows a bit better on day two. Certainly not bad and might be a good introduction to chinon.

  • The 2009 is not a successful wine, to my taste. It borders on fruit bomb. The fruit is attractive and clean, but the wine doesn't speak to me of the gravel soils where it is grown (the way '08, '07. and '06 did, for example), and it simply is not a very interesting wine. I thought that perhaps I was catching the loud and fruity opening phase, so I left it alone for about 12 hours and very little happened to improve the wine. It's drinkable and the ripe dark fruit is very tasty. But I didn't find balance, acidity, or much beyond the fruit.

  • Bright purple in the glass, nicely fragrant nose showing off the cab france violet aromas that I like so much. This is on the elegant side of the spectrum but still speaks of its origins with just the faintest hints of tannic structure lurking in the background. My only nitpick is that it seems a touch watered down on the mid-palate, not as full as I was looking for. An interesting outcome, as I was expecting the opposite with this vintage. In any case, the quality is evident and I will continue to try the other Baudry '09 bottlings as they are released. Cork closure, may be worth leaving a few in the cellar to see if they fill out.
