Nothing discernibly flawed about this bottle, although it seems rather tired and on its last legs; Some pretty aromatics of pepper, grilled meats and olives, with some fleshy fruit on the palate that thins out quite a bit on the finish; I would drink these up if you have them

1995 E. GUIGAL BRUNE et BLONDE COTE ROTIE- 2% Viognier blended in; this was the classic taste treat I`ve always known it to be with its pepper and spice accents to the plum and blackberry fruit; it had wonderful mouthfeel and the spicy fruit just kept on lingering, one of my favs of all the reds/ wines; it was better than my notes state.

Aged meats, complex with a hint of pepper, soy sauce, hoisan, sweet and sour notes, savory, meaty; good body and stuffing, ample mid-palate still, dry ample tannins, long, but felt just a little bit hot in the finish. At its peak, catch it now. 3 yrs in oak. With Philippe Guigal in B.H.

Brown at the edge. Soft peppery aroma, the wine is drinking soft and supple with elegant balance. It shows cherries and clean minerality in a well defined wine with medium body and good length. The color says, 'Drink up'.

(Mostly) Northern Rhone Night (The Bristol - Chicago, IL): This provided a nice contrast to the 1999 Guigal Cote Rotie BeB that was also open at the table. Noticeably more rustic, this was a treat. While the 1999 was more powerful, this seemed a hair more classy. Nice combination of earth, fruit and florals.

A night of (mostly) Northern Rhones (The Bristol, Chicago IL): Nose: This was showing a lot of poise and balance on the nose with tones of olives, black fruits, black cherries, bacon fat, and spice tones with some leather. There is a real refined quality to it with good depth and class.
Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and silky tannins. The feel is refined with tones of black olives, black cherries, bacon fat, and a lot of spice tones.
Overall: This is a really elegant and mature cote rotie. There is very good balance along with nice depth.

Tasted in Jan. 2012 as part of a mini-vertical of E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie vintages 99, 97, and 95. This one fell in the middle of the 3 for me, but not by far. This vintage proved to have amazing layered complexity. Every time I revisited the glass I was finding new aromas. Very delicate at first, then offering rose petals followed by an almost caramel characteristic, then some rich juicy ripe fruits. Very pleasing blend of base and top notes at the same time. Only medium weight on the palate but great acidity. Long earthy finish with a brush of spicy pepper on the very back end.

From 750ml. Not tasted blind. I had little expectations of this bottle, because I never caught the Northern Rhone bug. Whether because of bad early experiences or personal preference, I veered away from this region and delved into Bordeaux, Napa, Germany and other regions. I had been dreading the day I would open this wine because, frankly, I expected it to be awful. Well, well, well...I stand corrected and humbled. This is a deliciously intriguing bottle of wine. Aged charcuterie, caramel & spices make up for an exotic nose that is intoxicating. Medium bodied, very flavorful, but neither obtrusive, nor over bearing, the main aspect of the palate that stands out is its great length. Excellent, unusual, delicious wine that keeps me coming for more. I am going to have to give Cote Rotie another shot.

Excellent wine. Have consumed 23 of the 24 so far, fully mature, very nicely balanced and elegant (some might say light....). Seems to have lost a step or two in the last few years, however very interesting bacon fat on this bottle, didn't notice on the last 22 bttls. maybe not observant enough! Smoke and leather round out the mid palate. Really nice amber, bordering on orange colour. Very enjoyable. This has been a really fun wine over the years will be sorry to see the last one go.

Wife Linda loved the white pepper laced black fruit .. a bit much for me.. medium bodied, dark brownish garnet. violets on the nose and pallet followed by game and black pepper quickly giving way to white pepper that lingers on a long moderate tannin finish. Not for the feaint of heart .. good complement to bbq ribs dinner and chocolate cake finish.

This wine initially appeared corked. All but one of us thought it was corked. It clearly got much better with time and although a few of us thought it had some TCA it was drinkable. The 1995 was a classic Côte-Rôtie and much lighter in style than the 2003. I think this is a very nice wine and if it was not partially off would have been significantly better than 2003.

Right on the mark - if you have some, open it now. It takes just a few minutes to take in air and open up, but when it does, it shows a beautiful balance. Acidity is still present, the fruit is bright and ripe, and full within your mouth. Just enough ripe tannins to have a good presence, and a nice 20-30 second finish of red fruit, and a taste of charred wood. Fantastic.

Still looks good in the glass. Ruby with no discernible bricking. Nose is decidedly gamey, with black fruit. The fruitiness has generally left the building, assuming it was there before, with pepper, meat, blackberry, and gravel predominating on the palate. Noticable, but balanced, acidity and a solid finish. Very nice, but I can't imagine it's going to get much better. Drink up.

Edward Roberts Pre-Auction Tasting (Columbia Yacht Club): Deep ruby color. Meaty dark fruit and cherry notes. Red fruit, spice and soft floral tones on the palate. Nice finish. 13 % alc. Ok, no one needed this to be opened, but it didn’t open itself. The nose on this announces itself as unmistakable Cote-Rotie. A rich and developed nose of black olives, rosemary, lavender and smoked meats, coffee and mineral. An inviting nose and very pretty wine, if not as distinctive as the Jamet and Rostaing. See R&RR 2007.

Medium ruby with some amber. Beautiful nose of red cherries and flowers (if smelled blind, I would have sworn it was a pinot noir!!!???). Medium bodied, sharp acidity. It lacked more in a mid palate and a longer finish, although the nose made it worthwhile. This is the best bottle of this wine I've had, with the other 3 had been overly acidic and lacking fruit.

Barnyardy out of the bottle with red fruits, I decanted half of this into a 375, then double decanted the rest back into the origianl bottle. This had a little sediment, but not much given that it's a decade old.
An hour after double decanting, this shows hightoned red fruit, camphor, and notes of azalea and honeysuckle. Sweet fruit just flows out of the glass along with the flowers. This may well last longer, but I've only got one bottle and if it's like this I'm going to have a hard time keeping my hands off of it.

This got off to a bad start tonight. Straight from the bottle, this wine had an unpleasant, chalky nose with a bit of vanilla and hay. In the mouth, it was sour. I came back to the glass an hour later to find a completely different (and infinitely better) wine. In the glass, it's an intense, cloudy red-- almost completely opaque. I don't mind a little sediment, but I wish I'd decanted this. I've never seen so many particles before. The nose is primal and gamey, with wet earth, mineral, bitter green olive, plum, licorice, mushroom, and blackberry. The olive note comes back slightly sweeter on the palate, and sticks around for a very long finish. Enjoyed it immensely!

This wine was only decanted for 1 hour before we drank it. There was some leakage but the cork and wine were still in fine shape. This wine is still going strong since the last time I had it in May 2002. Black pepper, dark chocolate and respberry notes in this full bodied wine. Firm tannins. 91.

Drank this in May 2002 with grilled Lamb. Dark ruby color. Full bodied wine. Drank it side by side with a Behrens & Hitchcock Syrah. Not as sharp and tannic as the B&H. Good fruit but it seemed a little dull in comparison. A very nice wine though with meaty plum notes. Drink through 2006.

Blend: Syrah
Color: Deep purple with brown edges
Aroma: Earthy, spicy, dark berries
Taste: Plum, clove, black pepper
Finish: long
Notes: Wow! 10 years old and still tasting young and fruity. Required over an hour to open up. Stood up well to a yellow curry. A good food wine as well as by itself.

Medium red crimson. Huge aroma of white pepper and barnyard funk. Nice round full red fruit and big pepper flavors. Long peppery finish with some slight green olive. 1/05

Tasted at grossie's BBQ as part of a Guigal B&B mini-vertical. Stewed tomatoes and smoke on the nose. Nice sharp black pepper framing dark fruit. Plastic finish. Bottle might have been slightly off (?)

NYC Group does Syrah (NYC): Thin, acidic, and stripped of any real character. This must be a bad bottle?
