Double decanted for 5 hours before drinking. Excellent deep aromas of blackberry, black current, plum, cherry, cedar, liquorice, and some floral and earthy tones. Sophisticated and suave on the palate. Quite silky with just a hint of powdery tannins at the finish. Very good length and weight for the vintage. Drinking very well now, and having given this a good airing, I feel it’s drinking at it peak. A very classy Pomerol. There’s absolutely no rush with this, but at the same time, there’s probably no need to wait either.

Blackcurrant, plum, cedar and floral notes. There is purity to the fruit on the balanced palate, with lively acidity and some fine tannins on the finish. This is drinking well now and may improve in the future.

(Bdx 2004 "2ème cru"-tasting) Very clasic nose. Full and rich. Developed. Black fruit, cedar, ink and hints of bell pepper. Liquorice spiciness. Very deep and profound. Medium-fullish, fullish, very balanced palate. Properly austere. Black fruit and cedar. Tobacco tertiary notes. A tiny bit short finish and dryish tannins. We actually guessed on left bank on this. The cabernet franc portions fooled us, but add proper freshness! Lovely! (Third place in tasting)

Great looking wine! Beautiful ruby red in colour, enticing nose ripe red berry fruits! Very modern in style, almost new worldy! I must say this is not my style of preference!
Chez Cov, 2 bottles, first decanted second opened 3 hours, perfect corks and levels - quite deep and dense ruby, youthful robe; classy nose, black cherry, some earthy minerality, hint of liquorice, complex for right bank; medium bodied with second bottle notably fuller and rounder, fine length and persistence for 04, first bottle tad dilute in mid palate, nice balance, early maturity, some upside, 10+ years. F (17.5).

Since the first glass, this wine has gained in depth. Prefumed softness has now turned into a monumentality and solidity of structure that was not there an hour ago. Is this a good development? I don't know. I quite liked it before it had reached this point. But if it is in the nature of this wine to go this way, then so be it.
I'm going to buy some more.

I have just had my first glass of this wine now (18.21 Australian Eastern Seaboard time). It has been in the decanter for about an hour. Still, not showing what I suspect it has to show = very dark, almost black colour; wonderfully perfumed nose of dark fruit, and a palate that is complex and gentle, with black cherry, cassis and something else, perhaps sweet dark wood.
Back later.

Chateau La Conseillante Vertical with Marielle Cazaux (Au Petit Bouchon): Playing to the typecast and filling the role in this flight that the '01 did in the first - on the muted but elegant side. But then it firms up a bit and seems to lack a bit of charm relative to the others, showing woody oak on the finish. Marielle recall the vintage as cold and rainy and I can't say this is one of the '04s that's seemed to transcend that.

Chateau La Conseillante Dinner with Marielle Cazaux (Le Cafe Descartes at the French Embassy): Expressive youthful nose displaying cool black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, a hint of cremes de cassis, plum, cherry, cedar, ash, lavender and limestone dust. Beautifully integrated youthful palate, finely layered cool black fruit, silky and polished, very fine tannins and a medium to long youthful black fruit driven finish. It is drinking nicely but needs another five years to reach the youthful peak. Another wine with very refined palate.

La Conseillante Vertical Tasting (French Embassy - Washington, DC): Aromas are deep and concentrated, this seems young, but showing some violets, earth and smoky subtleties. Built well on the palate, dusty but fresh. Dark currants and plums mix nicely with elements of pepper, earth, spiced tea, soy. Still time ahead, but approachable, this is a spicy, earthy vintage.

Had as corkage at NoMad in NYC. Purple with red and brick at edges. Deep plum with tobacco and spice on nose. Touch of cherry sweetness on nose too. So with this beautiful nose I would have expected magic on the palate. But it was stubbornly closed. I got all the tannins and acid but none of the primary or tertiary flavors. Is this wine just “dumb” and in an in between period or is it just not that great? I have no idea and I will never know because this was just a one-off bottle.
Over time it opened up somewhat but it never really approached the magic of other 10-15 year old Bordeaux that I have had. So I’m not sure what the story is here. But I cannot think of a better illustration why one should buy cases of good wine and drink them over time - it would have been really helpful to watch this evolve.

That's how a great Bordeaux tastes like when it is in the middle of it's drinking window. Dark ruby colour, lovely bouquet. Very soft tannins, absolutely round and well balanced, but still with some fruit. If you like your Bordeaux when they are old, you can hold it for another 7 years without concern, but if you like them with soft tannins but still fruity, that's the time to open it.

Conseillante Master Class (Sherry Lehmann NYC (59th & Park)): Drank side by side with the '05 and '06. Here's a big deviation from the group and I. We started by smelling all of the wines side by side and to me this was just by far the most compelling nose. Very herbal. Very interesting. A bit more nuance than the others and a wine that hints it could be in a reasonable stage. Lots of violets, black fruits, very long finish and this great acidity and tannins that are in a fairly good balance. This is drinkable now, but I suspect could go longer. Rainy spring into a dry summer and perfect harvest time.

Dark, young and robust tannins. Decanted one hour which was not enough. Dark fresh fruit with some oriental spices. Somewhat unripe character and a little disapointing but think it can improve and next bottle in 5-10 years time.

My penultimate bottle of 2 cases bought en-primeur. Very different, and surprisingly improved to my last (and indeed all previous)bottle/s tasted about a year ago. Wine has lost that youthful purple hue and gained subtlety complexity. Wish I had kept the rest for longer...

During an introduction to Bordeaux speech I gave at a wine club in Singapore. Dark purple still, little signs of aging. Discrete nose of dark fruit, mint, forest floor. Rather closed on the palate to our surprise despite decanting. This fresh and well structured in line with the 2004 vintage. After some decanting it opened and showed very nice tertiary aromas around leather, earth and the tannins softened. A very good Pomerol.

Two years since my last bottle and this is just beginning to open up. Rich, opulent and powerful. Typical Pomerol: fragrant nose and lovely fruit notes of strawberry, cherry and plum throughout the mid-palate. Tannins are still noticeable on the finish and I suspect this has 10 tto 15 years of life ahead. Bought en primeur and represents excellent value.

Glossy red/purple and looking very young still. Lovely primary nose of plum, fruitcake, spices. Also lots of blueberry and blackberry fruit. A lot going on but still not too distinct so clearly not close to being ready. On the palate it is very beautiful and balanced with a decent acidity keeping it all in balance. Very polished and wonderful length. Auction price very fair right now for something of this quality and it is below the community price so I think this is a good buy signal!

Quality-wise somewhere in between my last bottle and the three consumed during 2011/2012. Comes across as leaner and more elegant than the early bottles, which, as I recall, were all about power and opulence. The wow-factor isn’t quite there anymore, but this is still pretty solid stuff. Drink 2015-2018.

An easy afternoon with close friends (@ FD Pomerol): Blood red. Creamy bouquet with dark and red forest fruits, truffle, cedar and luxurious oak. Same on the palate. A bit rustic as well. Good acidity, some pleasant sweetness and soft, round tannin. This bottle was in the beginning of its maturity stage and really lovely. I know the wine was stored a bit too warm, but not for how long. Anyway a beautiful wine this afternoon.

Lightness is showing through in the garnet color. The truffle, licorice, plum liqueur, cherry blossom and spice box aromas are the best part of the wine. Medium bodied, without the body or depth found in vintages like 2005, but with an elegant, fresh, ready to drink, spicy, red berry personality. This is not a vintage for long term aging. 2004 marks the debut vintage produced by Jean Michel Laporte.

Not nearly as good as my previous three bottles. Displays the same lovely bouquet, but comes across as fairly austere and one-dimensional on the palate. It’s been almost two years since I last had one of these, and though I currently believe this to be an isolated case, there’s always a chance that the wine is on its way down. I’ll open another bottle within the next couple of months before I cast my verdict.
Absolutely delicious! One of my guests, upon trying it said: "What is this wine?" with a look of amazement. Just right to drink at 10 years of age. Silky, balanced, great youngish merlot aromas. Lacks the complexity that perhaps will come with age, but an absolute joy to drink. Bought at the property. Recently ordered 6 bottles.

Great evolving complex nose, of blackcurrant, licorice, later green olive, chocolate and soy sauce. Full bodied, fruity, but serious palate. Gripping but smooth tannins. Slightly spicy, medium finish. Young and drinkable now.

Still feels quite young and would expect more complexity to emerge over next 5-10 years. Someone - maybe Parker - described this wine as "almost Burgundian" but I don't see it that way at all. Powerful, structured, tannins just beginning to soften, this is great stuff and will get better.

Dark ruby with purple core. Expressive nose of dark fruits, chocolate, oak, spices, a hint of bell pepper and a smoky undertone, very nice and complex. On the palate a soft entry with medium body and medium acidity. Finally this wine has entered the drinking window. I like this vintage as we have an elegant and highly drinkable Pomerol here. Soft and stylish, great with food. Decant for 1h recommended.

Opened for 3.5hours in bottle. Dark red-violet. Nose of dark fruits, liquorice, candies. Full body, punchy, tannic with over 1minute's finish. The finish also gives the sensation of after sip of grape juice. 6hours from open, more approachable. Try again in another 5 years.

Bordeaux 2004 (@ Bottles; Sas van Gent, Netherlands): In the bouquet ripe dark fruits like cassis, cedar and beautiful oak. On the palate dark fruits as well, butterscotch, beautiful acidity and although very pleasurable already still a bit too young. The tannin is round, open and still powerful. From 2017 onwards? 92+

Bordeaux 2004 - an overview (Restaurant Bottles, Sas van Gent): Power, tight and tannic. Fur notes, glue and dairy too. Backward wine, needs 2-3 years cellar time. Would love to have this wine in the cellar to sample and see it evaluate. For now, 18/20 (group scores: 89-95)

Slow ox'ed for for about 6 hours, revealing a beautiful, elegant, complex and approachable Pomerol. The bouquet is quite savoury, - there are dark fruits, cedar, liquorice, almond, herbs and spices - a nice floral element too. Entry on the palate is subtle, but quickly followed by a wave of refined sweet and savoury flavours. Acids are bright but soft and tannins beautifully supple, yet lending some grip to the slightly bitter finish. I really like this - enjoyable now after a decant or slow ox, but will be better in 10 years. Excellent balance - not a blockbuster; rather, a complete wine.

By the glass from Hermitage's Enomatic machine - this was an excellent 2004. It hada beautiful nose, with a lovely lush fragrance of dark plums and black cherries wreathed with gentle drifts of violet flowers, cigar smoke and slightly greener tobacco notes, and then a touch of earthy mineral and some sweet spices. Still primary, but one got the sense that there were little complex nuances just starting to bubble up to the surface of the bouquet. Great stuff. The palate, on the other hand, was a lot more savoury than the nose would lead one to expect - it was almost salty on the attack, with licks of earth and meat and roasted, salted almond skins lining a core of pure black fruit: cherries and plums, which were more succulent than sweet in their aspect. This was a very finely structured wine, with supple tannins and decent, if not quite bright acidity leading into the backpalate. The finish was quite lovely too. Seductive, feminine, yet not without strength, it stretched away with a delicious mouthful of spice dotting more dark-fruited tones. A lovely wine - this really outperformed for a 2004. While approchable now, its best years are at least half a decade or more ahead of it.

Chateau La Conseillante Wine Tasting (Watson's, Hong Kong): This had an 80:20 split of Merlot/Cabernet. An underrated vintage, this had a fresh fruity nose, dominated by Merlot. Good balanced acidity and tannins. Long length with chocolate developing. This should age quite well.

Decanted for just over one and an half hour before tasting. Dark purple. Big nose; dark sweet plums, plum liqueur and a hint of pine needles. Slightly more earthy secondary aromas, but initially very fruit driven. After a couple of hours in the glass the earthiness becomes more pronounced, and characteristic aroma components like cedar and cigar ash start to show. On the palate; extreme viscosity – I have never tasted anything like it! Silky smooth mouth feel, good flavour concentration and length. Enough structure to make this last for at least another five to ten years. Drinking beautifully today (at least with sufficient exposure to air), and may even improve during the next two to four years. This is however a very expensive wine and I’m debating with myself weather or not it’s worth buying more. That being said, this bottle easily ranks among my top five red wine experiences.

Drunk over two days. On the first day I tasted it over about 1-2 hours immediately after opening and did not find it fully convincing. The second day it was much better: aromatic herbs mixed with ripe dark berries and some oak sweetness on the nose. After swirling also mushrooms came up from the glass. The palate: a very smooth, elegant and intense mixture of aromatic herbs (reminding me of rhubarb candies), dark cherries, with hints of chocolate. Tannins are perfectly integrated. Medium-long persistency.

Purplish ruby. Lighter, more mineralic, nose than the 07 tasted next to this; still sweet and fruity but not as dense. Full and creamy with lovely fine, ripe tannins, the black fruit is plush and ripe and balances the spicy cedar wood in the finish.

The bottle was decanted for 3 hrs in a fine French restuarant. The bottles ullage looked perfect. The wine was very dark purple but had a very muted nose. Clear presence of black fruits and almond and pecan right off the bat. There was some dried mango/berry fruit on the nose after the first sips. The wine was full initially on the palate, but not opulent. I thought the wine ended abruptly and the finish made me think this wine is a bit closed. There is plenty of fruit below it all, and the acid is balanced. The wine is very smooth but something is missing. Good classic style but I need to re drink a bottle in about 4 to 6 more yrs and reassess.

Deep dark red. Some toast, herbs, plum, mixed red&dark forest berries and pensil lead. Round and soft. Easy drinking wine and a bit boring.

Medium deep red with a brown rim. Nose dominated by plum, smoke and ceder. Medium body. Reletively soft but still some tannins left. Nice wine but not great.

Deliciously expressive and complex aromas of red berries, balsamic tones, spices, shoe polish. Succulent, firm, round and harmonious taste, with cool fruit, lots of dry matter, god length and intensity. Good juice!

Still feels quite young and would expect more complexity to emerge over next 5-10 years. Someone - maybe Parker - described this wine as "almost Burgundian" but I don't see it that way at all. Powerful, structured, tannins just beginning to soften, this is great stuff and will get better.

2004 Bordeaux ... 10 years on (Bordeaux Index London): Dew and violets. Smooth texture and excellent verve. This is far better than the Clos l‘Eglise tasted before, which seems monolithic by comparison.

Gorgeous nose, dark chocolate, spice, and dark fruits. Elegant, full body with a soft and refined palate. Soft, fine tannins and balanced acids round out the lengthy finish. Drinking beautifully right now; evolved with time, would recommend a decant.

On the palate dark fruits as well, butterscotch, beautiful acidity and although very pleasurable already still a bit too young. The tannin is round, open and still powerful. From 2017 onwards? 92+

Nez sur les cerises et un peu la terre, assez discret.

La finale est un brin courte. Encore une fois très bon!
