Part of all grand cru Burgundy tasting at Bymark . Darkest of the reds. Forward nose with lots of complexity and depth but in the end there is a strong wood note, not unpleasant, just stronger than the fruit. The palate more or less follows the nose iIn flavour profile; the wine is very structured and long. The longer it sat in the glass the more the dark red and blue fruit showed. Made to age, an old style wine. Lot of time left.

2002 Burgundy, round 2 (Noize): An odd one, this. On the one hand it was soft, red fruited, perfumed and truffley, dark and bright and juicy with cranberry; but on the other hand it was grippy, acidic and tight. A fairly long, saline finish. I enjoyed it, but I wanted more.
I see Stephen Tanzer felt similarly in 2019: "There's a juiciness here but it's cut off on the back by tight tannins. This wine, too, struck me as a bit Cabernet-like, and unlikely to soften or expand with further bottle aging. Erwan Faiveley described 2002 as "a great vintage that we totally missed," owing to high yields and to the long macerations that were done that year "because the color was not coming.""

Great color, very deep. An hour decant. A bit of funk on the nose that blew off in an other hour or so. A little heavier bodied than typical (a bit of over extraction?), but overall very nice. Not a classic Corton, but very good nonetheless.

Appearance: Bright and clear, the wine is of medium ruby colour, with fading garnet rims and legs. Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity aromas of red fruit of cherries, black fruit of blackberry, oak notes of toast, animal notes of meaty, mineral notes of earth, sweet spice of clove, maturity notes of mushroom. The wine is developing. Palate: Dry with medium (+) acidity, the wine has high tannin of grippy texture, medium alcohol and medium (-) body, with medium intensity flavours of red fruit of cherries and raspberry, floral notes of violet, oak notes of toast, mineral notes of earth. The wine has a medium finish. Conclusion: Good quality Corton with a fairly intense nose showing decent complexity, with the red fruit evolving to blackberry as it opens, with some meaty, earthy and spicy notes, followed by a bit of mushroom. The palate is however less appealing, quite high in acidity and very tannic making the wine a bit too astringent despite its age. The flavours are decent in concentration, as well as the length. It is ready to drink now and can maintain for another 4-6 years.

nice, but just a little standoffish due to structure... not sure about whether this structure could retreat over the next four years and allow the wine to become a true star (like so many of my old Faiveley CdC bottles)... I only had this one bottle and I'm not going to take a chance... will look to other vintages

From a 375 C: Dark red N: Dark red fruits P: Took about 30 min to open. Then, OMG. Lightness and power, penetrating but floating. Smooth, very long, and balanced. Notes of red fruits--or something--maybe notes of Corton is more like it! Best with food, perhaps because it seems to be just reaching maturity.

I’d agree with some of the other reviewers here that this wine has very prominent tannins still and needs more time to hopefully resolve itself and become more balanced. There is still lots of fruit so I am hopeful in a few years’ time it will be performing better. Had purchased this case en primeur and had drunk a few bottles in their earlier life which had performed better. Again my bugbear with restaurants that allow corkage but then have really low quality, thick glasses so certainly not doing justice to drinking a 16 year old Grand Cru red Burgundy.

2012 FAIVELEY CORTON CLOS des CORTON FAIVELEY GRAND CRU- big time winner here; it had a medium red colour which belied the depth and intensity of the wine; I got toasty, spicy red cherry in the nose which was followed by more spice and earthy black cherry on the palate; this was elegant to the max; really good mouthfeel and outstanding from the nose through the tail.

Very disapointing. One could hardly notice the pinot noir typicity behind the oak make-up and the ridiculous style of this wine which was over-extracted, oaky and unbalanced (rough tanins, a strong alcohol sensation, jammy style). I thought it was a bad caricature of what a pinot noir from a great terroir should be in a top vintage. One of the worst burg I have ever drunk.
Revisited this wine after a year, similar note from last time. Wonderful expressive nose, earthy and cherry fruit. Rich, good intensity and great depth. Allow this wine to age for a few more year.

Coravined multiple glasses over 10 weeks. Still primary, tight, and closed in. Reticent aromas and flavors of red and black cherries, a hint of smoke, and earth. Ample medium grain tannins on the finish. Generous acidity. The abundance of fruity extract has me optimistic for the future. 92+ Second consistent bottle in 3 years. Wait 5-10 years.

Super Tasting 2 of 6; Maciej Does Burgundy (Bosk, Toronto, Canada): Uncorked approximately 30 minutes before service, served blind. Garnet in the glass, not showing much in the way of age. I suspect this is quite young. On the nose, this is fairly fruit forward, showing waxy red fruit, cranberry, baking spices, crushed rocks and floral note. On the palate, this is still a bit tight, but gives way to some cranberry, beeswax, mineral and earth flavours. Tannic structure is still in the forefront, and acidity is brisk and quite fresh. This has a lot of potential but needs some time.

Super Tasting 2 of 6 - Maciej (Bosk Restaurant, Toronto, On): (tasted blind - labelled H) This wine has a huge soaring super complex nose and ended up becoming my WOTN. Huge young nose loaded with cinnamon and nutmeg, everything is in great harmony. Palate is lower in acid than some others at the table, but still very enjoyable. Quite structured and I bet it's a bit young but it has load of potential and is really enjoyable today. Very exotically spiced, I absolutely love it.

This bottle was shock because there hasn't been much change since 2005. The wine is 10 years old and has been cellared at 55 degrees for over 7 years. Medium body, garnet in color, high acid, moderate tannin, still in primary phase with no signs of improvement in the bottle. Not closed in, offering cranberry/strawberry flavors. At this point I cannot rate the wine and only offer if you have bottles that have been scrupulously stored, you will need to wait for some time enjoy whatever potential is there in the future. It was not a particularly pleasant drink but it wasn't an unpleasant one. Having drunk 1/2 the first day, 1/2 the second, the wine had not appreciably softened although the acid was subdued on the second day. Nothing wrong with the wine, not defective, just not what I expected after holding since 2005. Personally, I am not excited about holding the remaining bottles.

(Note these were half bottles.) C: Clear, sparkling ruby. N: Cherry note. P: Perfumed at first, but blows off. Notes of cherry. Very very elegant. Even smoother than the Charmes-Chambertin. Just a touch too acid, perhaps. Great length. Excellent. Second bottle, 11/12: A bit acid again. Needs time (90 min?) to open. Maybe best to decant. Third bottle, 5/31/17: This one had a very soft cork, not easy to remove! Ended up having to strain out the bits of cork. Don't think it was corked, but the color was quite a bit darker than the first bottle. C: very dark red N: forest floor P: Moderately tannic and still a bit tart on the finish. This needs another five years or so. Thick and very long. Subtle power and great depth.

Dinner at L'Arpege (Paris, France): This was excellent tonight. Bright red fruit. But the prominent note on the nose and palate was menthol and plenty of it. With some secondary herbs and red fruit. Full and coating. Bramble, underbrush and earth. While this will do well with more time in the bottle, it is drinking well right now and is highly recommended at this price point.

Faiveley Luncheon and MORE (Makaros @ NLB, Denise Vivo and Le Bistrot): Noticeable alc on the nose but still shows quite a lot of flowers, and some honey dew melons! Lovely balance with very very elegant delivery of cherry, mentholly spice (nutmeg and cloves?). Lively sharp acidity of sour cherries, this is big and bold with very grippy tannins. This just needs more time to develop.

An afternoon with the wines of Faiveley (Makarios, National Library, Singapore): This is super young and very tight - quite a bit more so than the 2001 375ml that I had a couple of weeks back. Nice enough nose, sweet sappy fruit, almost honeydew like strangely, perfumy flowers, ferrous mineral and a hint of pepper. However, even after a long decant, the palate was really tightly wound. More ferrous than anything else, it only came around towards the end of the lunch to show sappy cherries and a touch of savoury soupiness towards its long, minerally finish. There is good weight here, and more density than the other Faiveleys. It will take time, but this is very clearer a wine of some breeding.
