I didn't expect this to have lasted or developed but I kept a bottle for three years and it has turned into something far better then previous tastings. A beautiful dark ruby colour with no signs of age. Blackcurrant nose, with hints of violets. Typical Rhone - but mellower with a bit of age - really pleasant and enticing. Mellow taste - strongly savoury, underpinned by prunes and black fruit. Hints of chocolate. Delicious. Still good finish with a mix of tannins and acid. All pretty much the same two days later.

Easy-drinking, food-friendly, accessible are all adjectives that would describe Chapoutier's entry-level CdR correctly. But besides this you have to admit, that the wine still has some ambition burning in its veins that most of the wines carrying the above mentioned labels lack. The nose greets you with some bright cherry, raspberry and slightly herbal/medicinal notes alongside more earthy tones of wet leaves and moss. Light- to medium-bodied the wine offers a good acidity structure that serves as a solid backbone for some light tannins, sweet cherries and raspberries flavours as well as hints of prussic acid in the medium length finish. For its price point the wine offers quite some complexity and while it is clearly not made for keeping it is pretty enjoyable at its present stage. Drink within the next 10-12 months for maximum pleasure.

Flabby red fruits, low acid, no sense of place or varietal. I've had worse quaffers, and this does not offend, but it really doesn't have any redeemable qualities save a tiny essence of earth and minerals.

I think they designed this wine for early and easy drinking, and for the most part it does just that. I don't think they used any oak aging. I think they left the wine on the lees for part of the time, so we get a rich softness that is rather pleasing. Kind of simple, but still expressive and elegant. The Grenache makes it's presence known with that graphite earthy characteristic. The Syrah brings some back bone and structure. Medium plus bodied. The fruit has that Old World subdued, but persistent character. Smooth acid. Kind of hot, but basically balanced. The peppery finish also shows some graphite, black tea, and some very ripe blackberry, maybe black licorice. Previous vintages of this wine have been more expressive, but this is very much OK.

Like the Delas and Autard, this is another whole cluster version of CdR which, I think, works well for basic Rhone wines. It's fruity, with authentic grenache/syrah blend character, light in the mouth and together for drinking after about an hour. The fruit is good initially, but the texture improves with air. Nice cafe wine.

Not at all a bad wine. A little tight and bitter at first, but it opened up. Into what? A fairly "international" representation of CdR, with adequate fruit, not too much acid, and a pleasant nose. No real finish, and the grenache typicity and the syrah typicity where subsumed by the blending. I'd like a little more character, and a little more funk in my grenache, and am willing to put up with its comic-book strawberriness to get that, but this wine is pretty middle of the road. Which is why I have expect it to get better CT and critical scores.

Pale ruby red. The nose is bright and ripe, full of cherry fruit. Almost a palate of two halves matching the grapes on the label; ripe, sweet grenache fruit on the entry with spicy pepper from the syrah on the finish.

Passed thru vinituri. Color dark ruby. Nose tight fruit with garrigue. Palate with spicy full fruit. Good weight to the fruit is followed by prominent tannins that continue to assert on the medium to short finish. Not my favorite, but if you like Grenache based rhones not a bad wine for the money.

Light ruby and low viscosity. The nose is balanced with light earthy aromas and low alcohol to conduct them. In the mouth the black pepper and clove overwhelm any other taste, leaving a medium earthy finish. Rustic. I would match this wine with foods that can benefit from that spice mouth. Maybe vegetable cremes such as pumpkin or lentil, goulash, borscht and the like. It is a dangerous wine. Badly paired, can poor the food experience. I enjoyed very much the 2007 vintage. This one is a wine that I would not recommend to anyone. I feel bad for having 5 bottles left.

This wine was purchased by the glass at Finch's Wine Bar & Bistro in La Jolla. The bottle from which it was poured was approximately half full, having been opened approximately 18 hours earlier, stoppered but (best I can tell) not refrigerated or stored with a nitrogen gas blanket. The wine was served at approximately 72 degrees Fahrenheit, which made the alcohol taste hot. I mentioned this to the owner, who acknowledged that the wine was too warm yet did not offer to chill the contents of my glass. The robe is opaque crimson and the nose shows moderately intense brambly aromas, as well a licorice and lavender. Medium-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity and medium sweet tannins. The middle palate is solid and carries through to a medium-length finish, terminating with a whiff of heat. This is certainly a relatively well-made wine for the price; however, considering that I paid nearly as much for a glass ($10) in this bistro as for a bottle at retail, I would have expected more favorable serving conditions. I suspect that this wine would merit a higher score if tasted under more suitable circumstances. Drink now-12/13.
