Seems to be in prime drinking window. I find Casanova Di Neri to drink well when young (10 or so years) and overall it’s probably my favorite Brunello producer for this very reason. So I was intrigued to see how 2006 was at 18 years (the 2004 vintage seems over-the-hill to me).
There is a kind of line-straddling I like between traditional and “new” and I find this wine passes that test with flying colors; the fruit is still there but moderated, really nice saline nose with cherry, mild sandalwood and black licorice, refined mid palate, elegant in the way that only Brunello can be. Minimal bricking with not a lot of tannins. Perfumed but understated. Wish I had a few more bottles as it was worth the price of admission. Hard to imagine this getting better after following it’s trajectory since release. This vintage of this wine never disappointed and I’m impressed with the sustained quality - last time I tasted was probably 8 years ago. Advice: decant through Vinturi, wait an hour and then drink up. It did not evolve much after 2 hours.

Gorgeous bottle of BdM. Deep floral nose with some leather, something stony, and ripe rich fruit. Gorgeous on the tongue with richness to spare, a huge burst of dark purple fruit, high acidity and fine tannins. The finish is super long, super dense and just f-ing amazing. I need to buy more wine like this!

Opened and decanted half. Enjoyed in Grassl Cru glass. Tasted with food (homemade tagliattele egg pasta with tomato-basil sauce, in case you were wondering) and then on its own. Dark garnet color. Nose offers some plum, cherry notes and earth. Hint of red clay/cedar notes. Good dark fruit with firm but not obtrusive tannins. Shows a touch of oak. Sufficient acidity to carry the fruit. Enjoyable.

PnP, this was a tasty BdM if not exceptional. Suffered a bit in comparison to the Felsina CCR Rancia that immediately preceded it. Still going strong, and no reason to think it won’t continue to drink well for another 5+ years.

Lovely Brunello. Decanted for 3+ hours. Open up with cherry, lavender and the rusted nail finish. Great expression of a brunello. Still going strong but drink it over the next 5 years.

Leggy in the glass followed by saddle leather, sweet vanilla oak, bright ripe raspberry, anise, cassis and mouthwatering glycerine that glosses over tannins - bigger body, long persistent finish and explores the entire palate. Alcohol level is still a little robust, but beginning to meld into the wine as it sits in the glass.
p.s. cuts through a nice sharp Italian cheese and homemade pizza

Decanted and noticed bricking and some evidence of age on the nose. Opened around an hour later with chocolate and some dried red fruit indicating it’s probably past it’s peak but still very good. Paired with braised lamb with pomegranate and herb sauce and the combination brought out the best of the wine with some sage, tobacco and more chocolate on the finish. Was better with food than on its own so finished with a couple of pieces of dark chocolate with sea salt and again went well I agree with others that it is past it’s peak; it does not have the legs of the 2001 or 2007 but nevertheless a very nice wine.

With 2 hours of decanting, this was a stunner. Very well made wine with depth. More plum than cherry now, but the flavor lasted on the palate for minutes. Its at its prime!

Popped and poured. Aromas of balsamic, mushroom, forest floor and star anise. Flavors of sour cherry, dried mushrooms, balsamic and black licorice. Very smooth. Medium finish.

Everything in its right place. Blackberry, cherry, balsamic flavors. Fine grained tannins and acidity on the finish. Long oaky finish. Drink now. I’m afraid the fruit will lessen with time and that the acidity and tannins will be dominating in a few years. 92-93.

2006 is starting to shine, if you let the wine breath for a few hours. Grand hints of earth and leather mixed with bright fruit and tart cherries. When extremely well with the grilled lamb chops. It has been 5 years between bottles of this wine. The five years made a big difference, based on my previous notes.

Expressive nose. A bit of leather. Blue/black fruits on the palate. Fairly tight at first, it softened with time. By the second night the ripeness of the fruit was apparent, but this is still brunello, it's not overly sweet or obvious. Worth trying now, drink over the next few years, it might end up too leathery/woody after that.

Weekly tasting group RWP #325; North and the Centre of Italy (@ VD): In the bouquet dark berries, herbs and spices, vanilla, sweet spices like cinnamon and licorice root and autumn impressions. On the palate dark berries, laurel, licorice, good acidity, round tannin and a good length. Beautiful wine with a future of several years.

Fom a Brunello tasting covering 2004 to 2008. Deep brick colour, clearly evolved. Wonderful nose dominated by dark cherries and some plums, but with a fascinating undertow of exotic spices (cardemom and cinnamon), as well as a hint of oak (vanilla and coffe). Full bodied, dry attack in the first meeting with the taste buds, lots of acidity, and then lots of sweet, dried cherry fruit. The aftertaste broadens out, giving room for spices (as on the nose) and coffe. Very long and fresh, with that biting dryness that is so characteristic of Brunello. Clearly oaked, but in a subtile manner. Mature, and propably at its peak right now, but will keep for many years. I will open my next bottle in couple of years, and the the rest into my retirement (I look forward to it).

decanted 30 min. this is at the stage where it's ideal to grab when mature fruit, ripe & plummy, coupled with lots of wood influence enables it to perform splendidly with food. less charming on its own. better to drink sooner, it seems.
penne w/rapini, braised lamb & corona beans
11/04/19 decanted & poured; as previous, ripe, dark-fruited, shows both its oak treatment & warmth on the finish, good but not great, drink last one soon. (89)

Mature and profound. Notes of leather, dried cherries, aged balsamic, roses, and fennel seed. Tannins are chewy but right. To my tastes now, this is a bit past peak and will get unpleasantly murkier from here. (Yes, I know this is the opposite of what I said last year.)

Shows well now. Poured a couple of glasses from this bottle with my Coravin to enjoy with Sunday pasta.
October 16 update:
another pour to accompany some Bucatini All’ Amatriciana. This glass had an hour to breath and warm to room temperature which improved the result. Noted menthol and cherry on the nose along with forest floor on the palate. Bumped up the score from 90 to 92 on the merit of this glass.

The Rotating Dinners, II.4: 2006 Brunello (Chicago, IL): The nose on this is nice enough, with some black fruit, as well as a generous amount of earthiness. The palate, however, features far too many bitter oak tannins for my taste. They're fine grained, show lots of astringency, and leave quite a bitter aftertaste, which pretty much ruins everything else.

Poured into decanter and drank over 2h. Transparent garnet with clear rim. Unlike the modern and rich 06 Tenuta Nuova, the regular “etichetta bianca” is a classic expression of Brunello with menthol on the nose, sour cherry and earthy notes. It’s all there but somewhat muted and lacking the aromatic and the silky but dry palate of the best Brunello. Still medium tannins, finish not particularly long. Nice, 90-91. Would hold for another 2 years to see the tannins soften a bit but doubt there is much upside in score.

I liked this, especially with about 90 minutes of air. Tart cherries, red currants, and black tea on a mid-weight frame, with moderate acidity and mostly integrated tannins. Good pairing with penne w/pork ragú. However, my wife liked it less than I did.

The nose has faded considerably since my 2014 note. A bit of red licorice, old leather, and fine dusty tannins. Pleasant enough, but this wine is clearly past peak based on my experience and I’d finish these up soon.

Drinking great right now. No decanting and it drank well for 2 nights. Perfumed nose. A little leather, a touch of tart fruit, long finish, no hard edges. Might be at peak, but I will certainly leave my remaining bottles to age some more, it'll be an interesting experiment for me.

Tasted blind. A lovely wine. Full of forest floor character. Earthy, herbal, and balsamic savoriness is woven into the fabric of this wine. Medium leathery tannins. This would benefit from a few more years of aging to my tastes, as it is still quite dense. Rating: 92
Guess the wine: Brunello. 2006 or 2007.

Dark ruby, tight, slightly musty nose with weak notes of stewed cherries, licorice and spice, bright and lively on the attack followed by dark, deep berry fruit, spice and juicy acidity, finishes long with more dark berry flavors, black tea, powdery tannins and hints of mint

This is great. I love the interplay of the oak, Tuscan herbs, tobacco, licorice, and thick bramble fruit. Tannins are in a nice place; firm enough to add seriousness but not harsh. I've become a huge fan of brunello over the past year, and this wine--retailing at around $50--displays why.

One of the better Brunello's I've had in a while. Dried cherry with sort of a tobacco edge. Interesting nose a bit beyond my descriptors. Although many have commented on a noticeable oak component I thought it was not prominent and not out of place for this style.

Tobacco, cedar and minerals on the nose. Opened via Coravin into a decanter and then consumed over two to three hours. Paired with Manicotti, it matched up well. Bone dry, dried cherries, moderate tannin, sufficient acidity, light touches of pomegranate and herbs.

Stood 750ml for hours, then PnP with baked ziti. Still very young and quite structured, this would have benefitted from even more aeration. Notes nearly identical to my June 2015 TN:
"This was really charming - beautiful nose of cherry and baking spice. Very ripe, fresh, red fruit on the palate - dusty dry with just a tinge of sweetness. This will be tons of Tuscan joy for years to come!"
Literally no rush to pop these!

Totally different to previous tries. Closed to start, then some unrefined tannins, through to a jammy stage with a nothing tail. On this showing 88 is v generous - I only gave it that in case I was having an off night! I hope the next try - in at least a year - will revert to previous form.

Still probably short of when this will be best, but drinking very well now, an excellent brunello. Decanted, and after about two hours, showed better, and so if you just had to try it now, it's not infanticide, but this is a very well built wine with so much there - if you don't have a fair number I'd wait.

First one of these since February 2013, and as expected, it has developed quite a bit since last time. Still very opaque and dark in color for a Brunello, but now lightening quite a bit around the edge. Offers pretty aromas of ripe black cherries, earth, flowers and spice. Full-bodied and rich, but displays better balance now. The ripe, opulent cherry and raspberry fruit has faded slightly, making its moderate acidity more noticeable. There's also a bit more depth and focus to the mid-palate now. Finishes long, with plenty of delicious, tangy fruit and lingering notes of oak and spice. A lovely Brunello, made in the modern style. 50+5+12+17+8=92
750ml stood for weeks, popped, poured and enjoyed with a simple pasta and red sauce. This was really charming - beautiful nose of cherry and baking spice. Very ripe, fresh, red fruit on the palate - dusty dry with just a tinge of sweetness. This will be tons of Tuscan joy for years to come!
Very nice brunello. Drinking well after a one hour decant. Cherries and smoke on the nose with a very floral mid palate that finishes with some tartness and tannin. Could still benefit from another year or two in the cellar.

Garnet in color. Black licorice, cigar, black tea and a hint of spice. Still tight and a little tannic. Clearly still not ready for prime time drinking to my taste. Tasted over three hours, not decanted, but that probably would have helped. Some black cherry fruit mixed in with minerals, licorice, and after two hours it did open up showing increased depth and length. Stood up well to cheese Ravioli and red sauce.

Monthly Tasting Group: Brunello's (Rinata, Mpls): Very dark red color. Decanted for an hour or so at the restaurant. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. This didn't show as well as a bottle several years ago, it seemed very young, oaky, and quite tightly wound. This just wasn't balanced for me tonight showing too much alcohol and oak with black fruits on a full bodied tannic frame. There's still all the right ingredients and given how this drank a few years ago, I have to believe it is in an awkward phase that will resolve with cellar time. Needs heavy decanting. 89pts tonight.

An evening of Italian wines with friends (Cleveland): Purple in color. The nose is really nice with dark cherries and black raspberries. Slight cedar notes and some forest floor. On the palate, this is robust with lots of black raspberry and dark cherry fruit. It is drinking very well, but I think there is plenty of time left. Showing some complexity as it unwinds in the glass. Enough acidity to carry the food, but this one is more about the fruit right now. Excellent.

Dark crimson color turning rust at the rim with a transparent edge. The nose is just heavenly with ripe berries, slight odor of radial rubber, suitcase leather, and ethereal earth. The palate is sweet and juicy with a full body, silky texture, and vibrant acidity. Flavors of red cherries, plum, tobacco, dried herbs, meat, sweet vanilla and mild oak. Finishes long with hints of spice. I am so glad to have waited this out before drinking. It's drinking beautifully now and will continue to provide much drinking pleasure until 2021. 93+

A well balanced brunello from the 2006 vintage. Integrated and drinking well now, it should add some complexity with age. Cherry and tabacco notes on the front palate - it has finesse and elegance on the back end with typical minerality

Decanted 3.5 hours before pairing with baked rigatoni and spicy Italian sausage. A dark ruby with crimson edges, the wonderful nose was of dark cherries, black currant, violets, licorice, and oak spices. Excellent density, intensity and concentration on the palate, with juicy well-integrated tannins and excellent supporting acidity. Very enjoyable, moderately long finish. Still a bit young, but the extended decant helped a lot and can't imagine it much better than this. But, more bottles put away and will follow.

This is clearly improving dramatically with time; the best I've had. Deep, penetrating flavors of pencil lead and licorice. Quite dry. This is quite like what the big brother, the Tenuta Nuova, was like about three years ago; massive, dense and beautiful. This style of Brunello is different to others - more modern, dramatic and impressive.

Although the drinking guide said this was ready to go, I am not so convinced after this bottle. Lot's of fruit, but also quite some acid and tannins that have not completely worked out their partnership. I found this 2006 a little more pleasing that the San Polo 2006. Nevertheless, I would have expected both to be a little less wild based on the drinking notes and based on the fact that I decanted both about 2.5 hours prior to drinking. I am thinking about 2 more bottle years before going back to this well.

Decanted 1 hour and needed more. Still tannic, but can be consumed now with more decanting. Should last for 10 more years at least. Dark ruby color, typical earthy nose with only a touch of fruit coming thru. With a big hearty Italian meal this was an excellent wine though I still prefer the 2001 to this vintage. Does not yet have the elegance of the 2001. For those who prefer a heartier style this will please you. Will wait a couple of years before trying next bottle.

Dark in color with an earthy nose of dark berries and flowers. Full-bodied and very fruity. Ultra-modern in style. There's excellent depth and intensity to the tangy cherry and boysenberry fruit. I am not especially experienced at bdm, so a few grains of salt. PNP and this is drinking especially well for a 06. Dark with slight clear edge; dark cherries; spoce, almost cinnamon, pepper, cherry, dark fruits, meat, leather; tanic but not overwhelmingly so, almost balanced - certainly heading in that direction; mid weight. Drink them now for an early and pleasant view and a number of years in the dark and cool will only improve. Approachable.

Italians at Mario's Osteria (Mario's Osteria): We didn't give this wine the respect or time that it really needed. mine tasted old and tired, like an overripe plum. Based on this one, I would drink up, but hopefully, and apparently, it is atypical. Well, it is no older tasting than many wines my friends who like aged wine have given me. But at under 6 years old, it shouldn't taste like a 20 or 30 year old wine.
The next day it tasted better, still very mellow, but not too old. still it seems time to drink up.

Can clearly age, but surprisingly open for business now. Decanted one hour, drunk over next five. In first hour, very tight and heavy. Opened up beautifully to cherry and dark fruits on the very full palate, relatively simple nose dominated by fruit, excellent tannin/acid balance, very long and clean finish. Great food wine, batting well above its weight for a base bottling.

I've found brunellos from this producer to really do a number on me and this one was no exception. It is quite similar to it's bigger brother, the Tenuta Nuova of the same vintage. Licorice notes abound, with deep, penetrating flavors. It's surprisingly accessible now too. Just a little less refined and more easy going than the big brother, but frankly this is a more interesting, exciting and memorable wine than just about evey heavy hitter Brunello I've had from the '04 vintage, and I've had my fair share.

Took this for a test drive not expecting much at this stage in its development. However, this was a truly enjoyable experience. Consumed over two days, nothing much changed over the course of 24 hours. Nose with lots of dark fruit - black cherries, some licorice, wet stone and raw beef. The palate with the same aromatics - very intense and persisting. Not at all as modern as I remember previous vintages (2003 comes to mind). Some oak but not new and it actually didn't show before a couple of hours in the glass when the primary fruit had settled down somewhat. Quite tannic but the tannins are round and perfectly mature. Impeccably balanced with a persisting finish. Very promising considering this is the entry level Brunello from this producer. Hold 3-5 years.

Enjoyable.

Was better with food than on its own so finished with a couple of pieces of dark chocolate with sea salt and again went well
I agree with others that it is past it’s peak; it does not have the legs of the 2001 or 2007 but nevertheless a very nice wine.

Finishes very long with lots of spice notes and a touch of sweetness at the very end. Not by any means a textbook Brunello, but very nice indeed - especially if you prefer this fruit-forward, modern style. 91+

The next day it tasted better, still very mellow, but not too old. still it seems time to drink up.
