Producer Website
Luigi Baudana is one of the last garagiste wineries of Serralunga d'Alba.
4 hectares are farmed.
4 wines are produced:
Barolo Baudana: single vineyard, south-west exposure, clay soils and "arenarie di Diano", approx. 300 cases made per year.
Barolo Cerretta: single vineyard, south-east exposure, white calcareous marls. approx. 300 cases made per year.
Both single vineyards were listed in the Renato Ratti chart of Barolo.
Starting with 2005 vintage, also a "Barolo di Serralunga d'Alba" is produced, from the younger vines (3-400 cases).
Finally, a white field blend called Langhe Bianco Dragon completes the production (production unknown).
Curiosities:
-the winery is currently run by the Vajra family of G.D. Vajra together with Luigi and Fiorina Baudana.
-wines before 2004 were bottled by hand and by gravity. Wines after 2005 vintage are bottled by machine.

Luigi Baudana is one of the last garagiste estates still operating in the Langhe region. It is also the smallest of all the VinConnect Piemontese wineries.

The estate is a mere 4 hectares in size (~10 acres), but all the vineyards are held in the highest hierarchy of Barolo vineyards, being listed both in the Lorenzo Fantini “Monografia sulla Viticultura ed Enologia in Provincia di Cuneo” (1879) and in Renato Ratti’s “Carta del Barolo” from the early 1970s.

Ceretta may well be the better know cru. Located on the east slope of Serralunga d’Alba, this vineyard has a unique soil composition, made of a very white, calcareous topsoil and a deeper layer of red clay beneath. Wines from Ceretta are all about class and broad intensity.

Baudana, on the other hand, is one of the best-kept secrets among Barolo aficionados. Iconic winemaker Franco Fiorina used to select fruit of Baudana for his highly acclaimed Barolos, until the late 1980s. Today, only three single-vineyard Barolos are released from this cru, and the Luigi Baudana may well be the only one to be exported to the U.S.

It would be enough to mention that Baudana is the name of the vineyard, of the village and of Luigi and Fiorina’s family, to express how deep the roots and how important the family legacy to this very unique place!

In 2009, Francesca, Isidoro and Guiseppe, the three children of famed Aldo and Milena Vajra of G.D Vajra, joined the Baudana family to bring new energies and an uncompromised respect to this story.
