Bad boy wine night - mostly high octane wines with a surprise or two. (The Grill Room at Rosewood DC): Slightly advanced color. Slightly medicinal nose, lychee, dry apricot, honey and butter scotch. Fully integrated palate, good acidity and a medium finish. It seems a bit cloying and tired. This is more akin to a ten year old basic Viognier than a Condrieu. Also, Viognier, even Condrieu, is better to be consumed upon release as Hugh Johnson recommends in his encyclopedia of wine.

We opened this to follow the Miner Viognier. Less floral, but I thought it had better structure and balance and was less hot. Tempered stone fruit and minerals, this was drinking just beautifully.

Blind Syrah Tasting w/ Ryan Johnson, Dick Boushey, Eric LeVine, and MrBigJ (Wild Ginger, Seattle, WA): The nose of this wine had aromas of citrus zest, honey and perfume. What a great nose, but there was a disconnect with the palate. Nice flavors of apricot and some tart citrus flavors were present, but it was also pretty hot. A boozy, cocktail wine... but it did have a great nose.

This is always nice. Like a ripe Condrieu. Not inspiring but a nice, honest effort.
