  • Many many years ago, I was not a fan of 1976 as a vintage, as it almost always suffered in comparison to those preceeding and following (the days of $20 1970's!). The opportunity to purchase well cellared examples at the right price came along, and here we are. Cordier wines were made with a rustic touch at the time, and this shows in the well preserved nature of this bottle. Dark scarlet red in colour and initially damp earth and autumn leaves. With air cedar, blackcurrant and iron with powdery tannins. Day 2 and there's some in the decanter and it is even better, as some cassis and tomato leaf has shown itself. Not great, but fun. One left.

  • Cork in decent condition with no obvious signs of deterioration.
Decanted one hour prior to dinner.
Fairly muted aromatics, fruit mostly dried up with acidity and astringency showing through. Not a generous wine. Usually, you can count on G-L for consistent quality but not here...

  • Still a deep color. Warm, earthy, sage nose. Showing its age in the taste, but still elegant and long.

  • A wide variety at LWS (Gruaud, D'Issan, Rinaldi +++) (Colonial Beverage, Chesterland Ohio): Chris brought this. The label was pretty battered, but the cork said 1976. The year I graduated High School (and half the people at the tasting had not been born yet). I had low expectations for this. Not a horrible vintage but not great and I thought this likely to be DOA despite that GL made very long lived wines back then. I was wrong. The cork broke on opening but came out in two pieces. It was not decanted which might have been a good thing (especially since I got an early pour). Deep ruby in color. The nose had a touch of funk, but some cassis with tobacco, both cigar and smoked. On the palate, there is most definitely fruit. Cranberries and cassis. Not a whole lot of layering and complexity which surprised me yet it had vibrant fruit. At 41 years, that's not bad. A fun treat. Thanks Chris.

  • Offered a taste from the old style Cordier bottle of 1976, lovely nose of dark fruit, currants, spring flowers, and tea must, lovely dull red color in the glass with no hint of brick orange, tasty tonight, medium body, subtle and almost elegant, touch simple, medium/long finish, pretty damn good after 40 years.
