  Fantastic nose of red fruit with a little dark fruit as well, touch of greeness, led pencil, forest floor, very good complexity, Clos Rougeard style almost. Elegant palate, an old style Claret at its best. Elegant, fragrant, long.

  Ready to drink. Tannins were light, but still fruit present. Distinctly cabernet. Had alongside a 2010 St. Emilion, which was showing more sweetness and seemed of similar age. Earthy and herbaceous (but not quite barnyard), graphite, blackberry, delicate. Bottle was opened ~4 hours before drinking, so would say it has some years left, but I'd say the prime drinking window started several years ago and is headed to the start of a very slow decline in the next couple.

  Pre-Super Bowl Gentlemen's Dinner (New Jersey, USA): In my cellar since release. Decanted around 3:30pm and served with the second course around 7pm. Shockingly youthful from the start of decanting. The bouquet was immediately evident, earthy yet powerfully fruity and complex, this got better and better. It was hard to pace myself and not drink this down quickly, so tasty! Still bright and relatively energetic, marvelously silky mouthfeel…this is why these “old-school” Bordeaux are so great when aged well. It still had great predominantly red fruit but amplified with cassis and graphite, not to mention cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and earthy mushroom/forest floor. Very long, luxurious finish. This was the best wine of the flight alongside 1983 Cos d’Estournel and 1983 Canon pretty unanimously with the order of the other two varied by individual. Overall, all three wines were very similar and of great quality with nuances separating them. As they sat in the glass, the subtle nuances were visible but initially in the glass they were almost indistinguishable.

  Dark garnet with clearing at the edges. Forward, fragrant & attractive nose of mature ripe fruit aromas of cherries, blueberries & cassis with overtones cigar box notes of cedar & aged tobacco, floral notes of violets, herbal notes of juniper, sage & rosemary, underbrush, camphor, earthy/dusty, truffles, leather & minerals. Medium-full bodied with a good concentration of balanced & smooth textured, mature ripe fruit flavors of cherries, currants & mulberries with spices, herbs, cocoa, minerals & a hint of oak. Long lingering silky-smooth finish. Drinks quite well at present but at 40 years of age it is at or very close to its peak of development although it may hold onto its current plateau of development for a few more additional years. However, I doubt any further development would occur. Fill was in lower neck; cork stained 1/2 way up & crumbled upon opening. A wonderful & elegant, aged Bordeaux in a good place.
