Vinetasters: Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Dried dates on the nose. Earthy, with a slight bit of funk. The attack on the palate is fairly intense, but it does taper off quite quickly. Tannins are a bit hard on this wine as well. Not as powerful and potent as some of the other wines, but just a large structure that doesn't have too much flesh. My 9th, group's 2nd.

Rhone OL focusing on '89 and '90 (Cote Sud, San Francisco, CA): Dark red violet color with pale meniscus; VA, berry, clove, pepper and graphite nose; tasty berry, spice, herbes de Provence, plum, plum preserves and pepper palate; medium-plus finish

Peppery nose, with strawberry jam also present. Good acidity. Still somewhat tannic.
