A good friend decided to pull this late during a dinner party. Zero prep just PNP. Honestly sounds like something I would do after the tasting ends and the drinking begins.
Dense dark fruit. Rounded, balanced and nice length from start to finish. A bit tight on the nose with some heat out of the gate with zero treatment. Some pyrazines mixed with herbaceous. I'm guessing this bottle was killed before it really had a chance to flower which is too bad as this was my first experience with Harlan Estate. I was on the allocation list for a brief period of time and only purchased 16 which still rest in the cellar to this day.
Based on the limited experience I'm not sure that I can make sense if this is worth the hype. Considering the vintage this is an impressive showing regardless of the label. If I had to score I would give this a 94 but feel that it would have improved with a proper decant and different stem.
Club pours and hungry hungry hippo was the theme when this bottle hit the table. I felt inadequately prepared with my Zalto Universal. Lol...
Harlan Estate Vertical tasting (WSPC): Cool winter, due to heavy fog they were not fully biodynamic (starting converting on 2008), harvest mid-October to mid-November, 80% new oak, 12.000 btl, bottle open 12.00 and tasted 13.50 -/- The color is much denser. The wine shows freshness, black fruit, a touch warm, licorice, black cherry & currant, light in the nose and a character, fine oak frame, balanced. Palate showing again finesse, there is a touch of developing notes, some dried fruit, raisin, dried red currant notes, coffee, chocolate, alcohol heat, the tannins are a bit drying, medium body, medium finish, some toast notes in the nose too.

needs time to open up, at least 2 hrs imho opened 2011 and 2009 this one is more fruity than '09, beautiful nose, nice integration, drinking well but has plenty of time to keep it on it's side

Impeccably balanced and perfectly rounded. Dark fruits, persistent and a bright finish.
