  • I treated it with the respect it deserved. It had been kept in ideal cellar conditions. I let it stand for 2 hours to allow the fines to settle then carefully decanted the wine with a torch, not allowing any of the fines to reach the decanter. I then let it breathe for 2 hours.
The colour had lost its bright berry hue, was moving towards amber and had lost some depth. The aroma was of spices, leathery and earthy which flowed through to the palate. The acid and tannins had all but disappeared. It was savory and long on the palate.
It was enjoyed by my audience of a 30 year old grandchild his wife and 3 friends. Although enjoyed by all the general view was that they may have preferred it more if it did not have as much age and showed some fruit.

This is what great Hunter Shiraz is about. Medium to full bodied.
Medium deep red, a little dull and a hint of brick. Still vibrant and primary at over 20 years.
Rich, sweet fruit. A mix of acidity and fatness. Mid weight but fading a bit. Great structure and texture. Plum with a little prune and a hint of tar.

  • This is what great Hunter Shiraz is about. Medium to full bodied.
Medium deep red, a little dull and a hint of brick. The aroma is massive. Bacon fat and black fruit. Still vibrant and primary at over 20 years.
Rich, sweet fruit. A mix of acidity and fatness. Mid weight but concentrated. Great structure and texture. Plum with a little prune and a hint of tar. More bacon.
A showy yet classic 20 yr old Hunter.

  • Really, really supple on the palate; very nice, long nose; I think right at its peak, with a beautiful finish.

  • And there’s the bottle variation. Decent hint of TCA. Drinkable, but feeling old and lifeless. A shame after a spectacular bottle late last year. Will be a roll of the dice on my last few bottles.
