Bought several bottles at a huge discount at auction and feeling very caveat emptor about it. First bottle was hugely bretty and barely drinkable -- the cheesy bouquet was totally overwhelming. Second bottle was a bit better, with the funk mostly blowing off after a couple hours. The third bottle I opened, recorked after an hour and let lie in the fridge for a couple days. Came out just fine -- terrific even, for what I paid. A beam of nice, sweet Napa cassis pokes through amid the tertiary flavors, with some surprisingly drying tannins toward the end. Hoping the rest are more like the third than the first.

Second Sunday Group: 1999 Napa cabernets (Our house): Blind. Opens with an odd cheese-like note that blows off after a few minutes, revealing coffee and black fruit aromas. More of the coffee on the palate, with red berry fruit rounding things out very nicely. Doesn't change much as it sits, but that really doesn't matter as this is just a nice glass of wine. Balanced, slightly plush, with nice fruit.

beat out a number of recent 'fancier' cabs; nice mix of still potent fruit with some mature components; earth, cassis; let sit for sediment

Nose on opening a bit funky but opened quite nicely after decanting for 30 minutes or so.
Really no more tannins and fruit thinning with a dried fruit finnish that went well with steak diane
Nice but definitely on the downward side, don’t wait any more
