Riojathon (London SW11): Slightly worried as it's a European 2003. Pretty gold in the glass, but not so deep. An utterly satisfying first sniff. This is going to be good. And it is. Notes of honeysuckle and nuts, with a really tangy and exciting finish. It remains compact and focussed. No blowsiness here. A triumph but especially in the context of 2003.

Bromley Wine Circle does Rioja - 16th November 2023: Rich, beguiling and (just as one would expect) oxidative nose. Hints of lanolin and tangerine. Palate rich, freshing with bitter orange notes. With air a little orange leaf appears on the nose. My second favourite wine of the night.

Riojathon (South West London): Colour - deep gold. Fresh, a kind of vanilla cream character and real backbone. White of the night and probably 2 or 3 of the night overall. Yum.

Wednesday night wine night (Phoenix Palace London): Not the first time I’ve been offered this, but the first time I’ve tasted it. Really lovely stuff - no hint at all of the 03 heat, has the oxidative notes but fully in balance, a waxy mouthfeel and it just goes on. Maybe wotn - this is so good.

Caramel, butterscotch, apples, flowery, beautiful. So much energy in this wine, very long finish. Fantastic value. Far from being tired. Timeless wines from a super classic winery.
