Lacking fruit and possibly past its prime. This is a wine and vineyard that I know well and this bottle appears slightly off. Not corked but maybe slightly girly cooked. Disappointing.

Drinking well from Magnum, sourced direct from Magill as an employee. Would expect 750ml to be more advanced. Level was towards bottom of the neck. Was either a recork or consume and it was in good form. Late 90’s Magills had more extract than the 80’s and this is true in this wine. Defiantly Penfolds in style, fruit is turning toward wholly secondary flavors. Oak is too prominent for my regular taste but is classy if you like that kind of thing and well integrated at 21 years on. Drink now tho.

Decanted 30 minutes. Yes, this is tightly wound. Very Northern Rhone, old-school style, firm, high acidity, black cherry, plum skin, cracked black pepper, mature meaty Syrah notes, integrated woodspice and cinnamon, and eucalyptus/menthol. Medium-bodied, elegant, indicative of the vintage; it's not thin, just not bombastic. There's still good concentration and plenty of quality to the mouthfeel. This was a couple years from peak drinking, but still very nice and expressive. For those that love the firm, rustic character of Côte-Rôtie or St. Joseph, you'll like this a lot. Doesn't need a huge decant, but it would appreciate a couple more years of bottle age. Drink 2015-2018.

Light fruit, a bit brickish. Nice wine, but fading - still a wonderful Christmas wine!
