  • Appearance: medium ruby with some garnet rim.
Nose: medium plus intensity; aromas of dark plum, cedar, toast, cloves, nutmeg, baking spices/cinnamon powder, blueberry, meaty, licorice, charred wood. It’s developing.
Palate: high acidity, high tannins fine grained, high alcohol, medium plus body, pronounced flavour intensity, a lot of spices and dark fruits come through. The finish is medium plus (close to long).
Overall, it’s a very good wine. Can drink now, has potential for further ageing.
First time to have Magill. The wine has exotic spices of cinnamon powder note that is very charming. Some meaty characters developed from bottle ageing interweave with primary dark and blue fruits. It is quite heavy oaked but still in great balance. Tannins coat the mouth and offer great structure however it starts to integrate. The flavour intensity is magnificent with clearly defined notes of exactly what you get in the nose. The finish is lingering and persistent. Typical SA wine. Great but not as elegant as others say.
On day 2, dark plum, prune and licorice dominate the flavour. A bit lack of finesse and nuance here, a little disappointing.

  • Deep dark crimson colour still without much thinning at the rim but a touch of brick evident. Not a flamboyant bouquet but inviting scents of dark fruits and a touch of liquorice and cedar.

Very good pure dark red ripe fruit flavours, its fairly obviously AU ripeness but without any hint of jam and not much oak a very refined drink. Plenty of intensity and very good balancing acidity. Restrained use of a mix of French and American oak is appreciated.

This could do with some more settling down but it drinks easily now for those who like the intensity and with full flavoured food. Superb wine and worth the price for a special occasion.

  • Appearance: Bright and clear, the wine is of deep ruby color, with narrow garnet rims and legs.
Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity aromas of black fruit of bilberry and blackberry, oak notes of vanilla and caramel, kernel notes of coffee and chocolate, pungent spice of licorice, herbal notes of eucalyptus, dried fruit of fig, maturity notes of savory. The wine is developing.
Palate: Dry with medium (+) acidity, the wine has high tannin of ripe and velvety texture, high alcohol, medium (+) body and medium (+) intensity flavors of black fruit of bilberry and blackberry, oak notes of toast, dried fruit of prune, kernel notes of chocolate, herbal notes of eucalyptus. The wine has a long finish.
Conclusion: Very good quality Australian Shiraz with a fairly intense nose showing good complexity, the wine has a nice mix of aromas with development, and on the palate it is certainly powerful, with plenty of strength but in good balance. The acidity is lively, with a robust tannin and concentrated flavors permeating till a long time after finish. It is ready to drink now but can further develop for another 3-5 years.

  • (Tasting at Magill Estate) Mid ruby in glass. Dark floral perfume, soft cherries, blueberry, ripe stonefruit (apricot/peach) and plums. Juicy sweet with rather tight tannins, coconut/vanilla from the american oak, with dusty dark fruits. Fresh, tight, and perhaps somewhat silky. Way too young to be drinking. Ends stemmy green with savory bouillon on the finish. Chewy.
