When I tasted this at the winery last summer I was pleasantly surprised. Opened one of our two bottles last night to pair with linguini and clams in a marinara sauce and it was an excellent complement to the meal. Subtle nose of red berries, soft and silky on the palate, mostly fruit with just a hint of earthiness. A lighter body wine than what I consider a typical sangiovese with a fairly short finish; however, for the $20 purchase price, a very good bottle of wine.

Barboursville and Horton Tasting Rooms (Charlottesville, VA): In the tasting room, this showed toast on the nose and presented a very soft palate that we described as refreshing. When we opened a bottle that night in the hotel room, it showed completely opposite - harsh and tinny, almost singing our nose hairs. Now open for a few days, the wine has mellowed a touch but with not much improvement. Bad bottle? Maybe. Reminder that our experience with wine is as much about time and place as it is about what's in the glass? Definitely.

Mild toast and tobacco on the nose. Slightly earthy palate but relatively short finish.
