  • This was surprising, cork was brittle but wine was still in great shape. Needed a little air but soon toffee, caramel, mocha flavours emerged. This was really open accessible and delicious. Finished everything last drop.

  • Still going strong, tough past it's prime. Opened up after a couple of hours. Teritary notes and blackcurrant gel. Very masculine and sexy. Paired well with duck and mushroom risotto. Great wine experience.

  • Vino da tavola, not an IGT wine. Served blind in a tasting of 1964-1999 Italian wines.

Luminous, youthful dark cherry color that betrays the age of the wine; almost colorless rims. Quite developed, mature and pratty sweet nose with aromas of dried dark cherry, glue, some raisin and a whiff of sweet new leather; after some air the bouquet gains some oxidative, nutty Tawny Port aromas. Full-bodied, structured and complex palate. Matured, ripe and sweet flavors with good depth; dark cherry, sunny fruit, baked bitter spices, some chocolate, a little dried fig sweetness, a hint of cocoa and a touch of dried flowers. Moderate acidity and abundant, still quite grippy tannins; yet the mouthfeel is suave and silky. Long, complex and succulent finish with flavors of ripe red cherry, sunny fruit, some plum, a little raisin and a hint of positive coarse character. Acidity cuts through the winish better than the midpalate, giving it lovely freshness and persistence.

A surprisingly youthful and structured effort despite its 23 years of age; there are some quite developed characteristics and the wine seems to fall apart in the glass after some air, but initially the wine seemed very young and I wouldn't be surprised, if the wine was drinking as nicely even after several more years! However, there is no need to age the wine any further, as it is drinking really nice right now. Has a good structure that guarantees the wine is easily paired with a great number of different dishes, but this is a wine you might want to enjoy on its own in a small company. Despite its numerous charms, this wine was not my greatest favorite of the tasting; instead, it seemed to be the wine of the night for a few. Highly recommended.

  • Isole & Olena Dinner with Paolo de Marchi (The Ledbury, London): Still powerfull and alive. So vibrant. Nice fruit and with some earthy notes. Has the cepparello sweet core and with nice cherry tones. Old school and rustic vs the younger cepparellos. Full and lush on the palate. Very nice and a close second to the 1997.

  • Last bottle of five, oddly perhaps the one in the best shape, though I'd put it down to bottle variation rather than changing my view that it peaked a few years ago.

Of medium depth, there's clearly some age at the rim, but it's not looking too tired on the eye.

Some good but supple black fruit on the nose, along with age showing in the mushroom. Also some complexity offered by fennel/mint/menthol

The palate is pretty relaxed & balanced. The fruit tends more towards cherry (with a little mushroom) and there are some very mild tannins still left on the finish. Not particularly intense, but I'll take the fine balance over pure impact. Acidity supports without sticking out. No great length to the finish.
