This bottle felt as if the fruit was fading vs the structure. The structure is there for at least another 2 decades but the fruit is mostly gone; a very 96 problem.

Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (The Morris, San Francisco): Ruby throughout. More backward and restrained at first compared to the other 2 Clos Vougeots. Black fruited and a bit rustic and sweaty, but this came on beautifully over a few hours to show real sweetness and sap. Excellent and maybe even better than that with 5 more years of aging.

Opened a few hours early and not decanted until right before serving. The nose took a bit of coaxing but soon shows a lovely complexity of dark fruit, soil, and musk tones. It's a very pretty nose, and also quite focused and pungent. The palate did not show the elevated degree of articulation and detail that the nose suggests. It's very nice, balanced and delicious. But a bit jumbled, especially next to the 96 Hudelot-Noellat served alongside.

Amazing brambly nose, good strong colour still and follows through with the palate. No hurry to drink but probably won’t get much better. Much admired around the table.

(Gros Anne Clos de Vougeot) Medium-plus colour. Very closed nose, very high acid, high tannin. A very intense wine (1920’s vines), but also very smooth. Finishes long. Wow!

Magnum, thin, showing vintage herbalness, earthy. 91-92
