Decanted for a few hours, which helped the initial animalistic older wine funk mostly blow off to reveal a beautiful aged Gigondas with a lot of aromatics going on (dark chocolate, licorice, leather, thyme, dark red fruits, celery seed, horehound candy) and a very smooth palate and finish. We really enjoyed it and think remaining bottles can age for up to 5 more years no problem, although it is definitely in its drinking plateau now.
I have always liked this old-school producer, as with age their wines take on a ton of aromatic complexity, although I understand they can be a little "dirty" at times (brett). However, my palate lately has veered sharply to Bordeaux and Italy, as I crave more structure and acidity (and lower alcohol) than can typically be found from GSM blends from the South of France. The wines go great with a variety of foods, though.

It's amazing (to me, anyhow) how little the bouquet of this wine has changed from how I remember it 6 years ago. The same 'purple violet wild weird candy' aroma that leads--pastille? I'd noted that in multiple Cayron vintages. I don't know what to call it, but it's sweet in a pleasant way. Then garrigue. A tiny bit of heat on the finish. Visually it's got a large, clear rim where it shows its age, but other than that, this feels young.
Medium garnet core. Loads of sweet cherry on the nose, which carries through nicely on the palate, along with a hint of rosemary. Dry, though the relatively low acidity gives a false impression of sweetness No discernible tannins. Still primary and fresh, this is an exuberant, playful wine with a loverly herbal/spicy overlay. Nothing complex, but very enjoyable.

Nedtonat Rhonevin. Alla markörer är där men det är klent och saknar uttryck. Mörka bär, lite animaliskt, läder m.m. Väldigt light.
