PNP. Raspberry, black cherry, leather and some gravelly minerals. Characteristic earthy funk on the nose and palate, but it doesn’t dominate. Nice density of flavor, in a medium light body, 12.5% ABV package. Slightly grippy tannins. Medium+ acidity, finishing with a bit of cranberry. Drinking great now with a bit of air.

Tasting at Maine Cabin: Wonderful showing. Deep and floral on the nose, with black olives, roasted red peppers, tobacco. Tangy and grippy on the palate, lots of life ahead for this wine. Flavors of black cherry and plum compote, with complex notes of leather, green and black olives, with charcoal and black pepper. Got way more expressive with time. Lots of life ahead.

Vinetasters: Loire red (Wilmette, IL): Served double blind. Moderate amount of brett on the nose here. More fruit on the palate, which thankfully hides some of the stink, but feels kind of lightweight and short. Reminds me a little bit of the 05 Raffault in that same way where there's fruit but the wine feels hollow and a bit short. My 7th, group's 5th.

If you want to be all analytic about it you can easily find lots of vintage-derived things to criticize (plus a little brett), but this is still old-school Chinon through and through, and utterly enjoyable. If the 18s turn out this fun, I’ll be perfectly happy with them.

Popped and poured. A translucent burgundy in the glass; very dark but not opaque. Scents of red fruits – raspberry and cherry – are released in the immediate space. Sandalwood and cinnamon kick in and continue through the finish. The finish itself is not particularly long but long enough for a bit of bitterness to be detected. Along with the sandalwood is a bit of earthiness as well. Some light sediment in the final pour and along the sides of the bottle. 12.5% alc. With leftover roasts of beef and pork, assorted cheeses and crusty bread. 01.21.22. Recommended.
