Littorai Release Party (Littorai, Sonoma): More prominent noble reduction than the '04 Mays Canyon - struck match / flint. Oxidative (browned apple, apple butter), butter (diacetyl), toast (lees), yellow apple, hazelnut. Tired on the palate, with very little varietal fruit.
When I think about the fruit vibrance and lack of oxidative character in the '05 Fichet, I have to think this is just over-the-hill. A good Chard at this stage shouldn't be dominated by this level of acetaldehyde.

This has not held up as well as the '04 Mays Canyon, which we had the day before...a surprise and a disappointment, as the 2001 Thieriot might be the best California Chardonnay I've ever tasted.
The nose is rather muted, pedestrian even. A bit of the ocean (salinity), the vaguest hint of tropical fruit (passionfruit), golden apple, and (as it warms in the glass) a bit of petrol. The flavor is more of the same, perhaps trending a bit more toward pineapple. There is still decent acid, and the oak is not obtrusive.
It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, just missing the quietly stunning finesse I've come to expect from Littorai.

Cellared since release; popped and poured. Medium deep gold; on the nose peach and tropical fruits but not effusive. On the palate: initial impression - this is still quite tight but intense and with considerable weight and with a very long finish. It then develops more depth especially in the mid-palate and viscosity as it sits in the glass and warms.

great acidity, minerality, citrus, flinty, light touch on the oak- great structure and this will be a long lived chardonnay- very "burgundian" and delicious. too young for the time being- give it another 3-4 years.one of the best chards i've had this year.
