Dinner at Tonny's (Tonny Restaurant, Geylang Lor 3, Singapore): This was one of those 2004 wines that have not quite shed their green meanies. If you can live with those though, you will get an otherwise well-made and enjoyable Chambolle 1er Cru. The nose was typical 2004, with notes of powdered Chinese herb and other green brambly tones floating around aromas of dried flowering fruit - think sour plums - spice and earth. The palate had another little touch of green bramble and herb to it, maybe ginseng, but past that, there was a nice bit of sweet red fruit and a kiss of spice framed by fine, powdery tannins and some juicy acidity. A nicely refined structure. There was a good sense of power and depth to this as well, all leading into a nicely full, and quite fine finish. Green aside, this was a fine Fuees, drinking nicely now.

This wine smells and tastes exactly like what I imagine the exoskeleton and wings of a ladybug would smell and taste. Oh so soft and caressing on the palate, some red fruit and wood is there, but it is so very green. I think that Bathod's 2004s may win the prize for greenest of the vintage. I've got a bunch of her 2004 premier crus in the cellar (sadly) -- I guess I'll let them sleep for a while and hope for the best. Clearly I am in Burgundy denial.

Bottle, fill and cork all sound. Lovely Chambolle nose with fine fruit, spice and perfume. This does have a "green" aspect to it, but it is not a detraction. This is a more serious Chambolle with backbone and longevity. If you like your burgs fat, then perhaps this is not your wine, but I find this wine compelling and on the rise.

This probably qualifies as the greenest of green 2004 red burgundies I have had yet! Quite unpleasant and really almost undrinkable. What a pity as this together with 'les Véroilles' usually is my favourite cuvée from G. Barthod. NR
